Subterranean Animism has probably the "worst" Final Boss and Extra Boss themes.

Those songs were meant to be listened to while playing the game, so listening to them outside of it dampens the song. Kinda like Sikieiki's theme.

One reason why Nuclear Fushion and Fate of Sixty Years isn't regardedly too highly is that they don't lend themselves to be very... melodic.

I don't know how to put this in words, but try listening to Border of Life and then Nuclear Fusion right after. Besides from TRUMPETS, there's definitely an indescribable difference in tone.

They're both fantastic in their own way, but ZUN gave Yuyuko's theme a lot more emotion. Read the descriptions on both of them.

I love Border of Life, it's my favorite track by ZUN. Like you said, it's got raw emotion that many newer tracks lack, especially with the blaring horns. Nuclear Fusion sounds great and it's very melodic and technically proficient, but you never get the same sense of HOLY SHIT SHE'S TRYING TO KILL ME from the music alone.
