When actually the VAST MAJORITY of violent crime in Japan is unsolved including the VAST MAJORITY of murders, their legal system is beyond broken with over a 99.9% conviction rate and no trial by jury (just a judge who loses face if he doesn't punish everyone who comes across his bench severely) and the Yakuza control high up positions in Japan's banking, political and legal systems anyway.

Japan's also the only first-world nation (other than America lol) which has the death pentalty, a club otherwise the past-time of such glorious countries as Afghanistan, China, Sudan and Somalia.

The biggest problem with the death penalty, of course, is that an alarming number of death row convictions have proven to be false, sometimes merely by college students doing a bit of research. It's an (eventually) irreversible verdict in an imperfect legal system.

Depends on the country, but in most European countries you'll find that the majority strongly opposes the death penalty. Of course, it all depends on how you pose the question. If you go around asking people on the street if the murderer and rapist of THEIR son or daughter should be executed, then you are bound to get the answer you want to hear.

And to be honest, the box isn't a nice place to be even in Sweden. Most non-violent non-sociopaths of any nationality would cry themselves to sleep on the first nights even in the most comfortable prison on the planet. And not just on the first nights. Then again, over here in Finland it can be pretty intresting in it's own right. I've a friend who took the "total", as in total refusal of military or compensating civilian service, and went to prison. Says it was a rather eye-opening experience to play chess, have a cup of coffee and watch TV with ex-torpedoes like normal people would. Then again, "rubber bullets", the only confirmed non-criminals in any prison system across the planet, tend to get preferential treatment from most prisoners due to the fact that people in the prison generally tend to share a rather unsympathetic view of the word of the 'state.

Any prison that's free from sodomy is a good prison, if you ask me. I don't believe in inflicting rape as a punishment on anyone, and all too often that's what a prison sentence in America comes down to. I guess it works well as a deterrent, though. Still, Swedish prisons are among those that have been criticised the most for not being firm enough compared with other countries. Then again, maybe it has something to do with ours being anything but overcrowded, since most everyone who commits a violent crime pleads insanity defense and gets put in a mental ward instead... from which they usualy escape weekly. But anyway.

Crime and incarceration is such a huge problem in the U.S. because the poor all live in huge clusters by themselves. Of course they aren't being assimilated into the culture shared by the middle class; we like to pretend they don't exist. And since public education is funded by property taxes, the likelihood of the next generation reversing the previous one's poverty through legal channels is exceptionally slim.

A real solution would be to install affordable housing in affluent neighborhoods so that all the poor aren't stuck in one place.

I have, I have provided 7 well refrenced articles that cover ethnic issues from Europe to Asia. Sadly I haven't found one yet that supports "crime is a inherent problem in black people" but I have however read papers that speak volumes on crippling issues in the operation of American correctional centers and the justice system.
