Riichi, pinfu, tanyao, menzen tsumo, and yakuhai/kazehai are your bread and butter yaku. You'll use these more often than any other in a standard game.

Chanta, junchan, ippekoi, chitoitsu, toitoi, itsu, honitsu, chinitsus, and shanshoku will pop up less often but you should learn to recognize when to pursue them.

There's plenty of other ones, but focus on learning how to best use the ones above before spending time on fluke yaku like rinshan or yakuman hands.

You might also benefit from drilling on tile efficientcy and reading daina Chiba's free ebook

Don't just insta riichi it when you hit tenpai, swap your wait to terminal, honor or suji trap. It's very effective at getting people to deal in. Because it's tanki you've actually got a garbage chance of tsumo.

>>15889171
You know if someone's going for toitoi then any tile where two have been discarded is usually safe, outside lower outs. (Like 4445 waiting on 5 for toitoi or 36 for something else). Since toitoi is actually hard to build yourself you can usually see when they hit tenpai as well, normally after 3 calls or two calls and their hand stops changing later in the round.

I don't mean tsumohou, I literally mean 'tsumo', as in you literally have to draw just the right tiles to make it work and you're waiting on six specific tiles until you're at the last one and can switch to suji trap.

>> No.15889356

>>15889343
Fair enough, and many chiitoi do get stuck at iishanten. But Toitoi is not a good yaku to be pursuing out of giving up on chiitoi. If you want to only call once to toitoi tenpai, that's like drawing sanankou for yourself, and that's not exactly easy because of how your chances of drawing subsequent tiles decrease. Making up your mind to really open your hand once you've given up on chiitoi is normally just too late, and never going for chiitoi is doing yourself a disservice because of how strong it is at getting people to deal in even with riichi.

Putting down 8m is actually more or less the same amount of risk and puts your hand in a better form.

All 9m are down, no chance of 7-8-9m wait.
Only one 7m is left, one chance of 6-7-8 wait. If you discard 7m, there's a three tile chance of 6-7-8m wait.
There's still a miniscule chance of him waiting on 8m or 7m shanpon.

No scoring, that's the main difference, hand reaching tenpai quickly and then winning is the main goal
Because score isn't important, players are allowed to call chi and pon at any time, all with the purpose of building the hand faster
Draws are done until a person wins or there are no more left in the whole pile.

Its a travesty, I won't deny it, but god damn it is fun

8s for guaranteed pinfu (4 outs) or 5p for potential sanshoku (5 outs)?

>> No.15954969

>>15954701
Discarding 8s still gives you a chance of sanshoku if you get one of the two remaining 5p. I'd go with that.

Hell, if you proceed to draw a 6p, you could discard the 9p and add tanyao and a chance of iipeikou.

If someone double riichis and the round resets because everyone played the same wind, does the riichi stick stay in? What if the person that riichis is the last to discard before the reset?

>> No.15957042

>>15956644
I'm pretty sure the riichi stick would remain in the first case, but I'm not entirely sure for the second. My first assumption would be that since it didn't really pass to the next turn (like how the riichi stick doesn't remain on the table if the tile you declared riichi on gets ronned), it wouldn't, but I don't know for certain.

>> No.15957071

>> No.15957077

Is it also the same for suucha riichi since it similarly aborts the round?

>> No.15957090

>>15956644
Don't quote me on this, but I think riichi qualifies as a call, meaning suufon renda doesn't occur.

At least, that's what the wiki implies:
>Any tile calls would render this rule invalid as all four discards must be uninterrupted.
With "tile calls" linking to http://arcturus.su/wiki/Naki which contains riichi

>> No.15957121

>>15957090
I don't think that riichi counts as a normal call that would interrupt abortive draws because I've seen a double riichi squandered by someone who declared kyuushuu kyuuhai in Seganet

>> No.15957148

>>15957121
Yeah you're right, that can happen. I myself didn't think that riichi counted as one but the wiki seemed to implied it and closed kan works that way so I don't specifically see why riichi couldn't.

In that case I think it stays in for all because the abortion doesn't occur until the tile is discarded and passes (that is, for both suufon renda as wel as suucha riichi, the hand doesn't abort until it's been confirmed that nobody will win on the discarded tile and the next person's draw would theoretically start. Though this is kind of a meaningless distinction for suufon renda as in practice nobody could win off that tile)

>> No.15957168

>>15957148
Also, to finish the picture:
Suukaikan: Can't declare riichi, game aborts when the 4th kan has been declared and the rinshan draw was not a winning draw (but before the discard)

Sanchahou: Stick doesn't stay on the table under the same logic as getting ronned on your riichi discard (turn isn't finished, therefore riichi is not considered "complete")

>I've seen a double riichi squandered by someone who declared kyuushuu kyuuhai in Seganet

I can attest to this working on Tenhou as well. I've personally ruined someone else's double riichi like that.

If it is kokushi then chun and shaa aren't safe either and neither is 9p. It's not impossible that he has kokushi tenpai but I'd say the chance that he is in kokushi tenpai this early, decides to riichi a yakuman and happens to be waiting on haku specifically is small enough to make it "unlikely".

Speed at the expense of hand value and stealth. Yaku are one of the early headaches as far as learning their han values. Some must be used with a closed hand, while others are still valid but worth less if own, and se are worth the same either way.
