I couldn't help but notice that while Touhou characters are discussed daily, the gameplay of the games themselves are hardly ever brought up.

In light of this, I suggest a bullet dodging thread. Techniques, protips, cures for "danmaku sickness", ect.

>> No.1576513

Truth be told, I never got out of the habit of bombing.

Guess it's from all those games I played as a kid with a USE IT OR LOSE IT mentality to bombs.

It's a side-effect of particularly intense or long danmaku sessions. Seeing bullet patterns when you close your eyes/dreaming danmaku, immediately dodging things that are bullet-like, panicking at the sight of sparks or spark showers. Beneficial if you play scout in TF2, but otherwise kind of distracting.

Youmu isn't too difficult until that one where she slashes the bottom of the screen. God I hate vertical bullets. It's why Reisen tears me to pieces in IN, that last spellcard with the rainbow suppositories.

I'm fine with vertical bullets, in fact that's the card that I destroy most easily.

Does it even work?
Watching bullets you can figure out where they're going to be, and where they're NOT going to be in the future.
Watching empty spaces? Not so much.

Reisen and Youmu have some tricky patterns that are not helped by the slow-motion and bullet splitting. Still, though, I can manage past Youmu but Reisen just tears me up at that last card.

>> No.1577759

>>1577755
You just need to watch the empty spaces in time.

>> No.1577768

The first time you play Touhou, you play it like Space Invaders. You move back and forth frantically. You die a lot.

Then you realize that you can move up and down, too. You complete EASY MODO.

Then you come to understand streaming. If the bullets are aimed at you, you don't move frantically; you move slowly to one side in a very cautious, streamlined manner. You complete NORMAL MODO.

Then one day you realize that you can see the spaces between the bullets instead of the bullets themselves. You feel like Neo as he saw the truth behind the Matrix. You complete HARD MODO.

Finally, you realize that Touhou is not a two-dimensional game; it has a third dimension: time. As your mind thinks in all three dimensions at once, transferring the Z axis of normal experience to a Z axis of time, you finally realize how to be in the right place at the right time to beat the hardest of spell cards. You complete LUNATIC MODO. You have reached Touhou Zen.

>> No.1577775

Or you complete Normal/Easy modo and feel it's enough and go back to the two best things about Touhou: the doujins and the music

>> No.1577778

Except that doesn't work, because empty spaces, in addition to moving, can shrink, disappear and reappear in other places. Bullets just move (usually) .

To most people, the harder difficulties are truly, truly hard. To some, it's just a matter of memorization which can lose its appeals fast.

I've completed EoSD and PCB (the only games that were translated when I first got into touhou) Hard, got to Sakuya Lunatic one afternoon and stopped. Just didn't feel it was fun doing trials&error or studying replays for a specific spellcard anymore

MoF and SA not having Sakuya in them didn't help increase my motivation either
