It's not going to be like 2002, society is worse now. Even that football final a year ago or something was small scale and the Japanese had problems with people chimping out. Not sure if this would work. Other people can look at past treads too, so if there was a tread of the currency of the country hosting the Olympics rising, traders would have already driven up the price of the yen upon the release of the knowledge that the Japan was holding it.

This falls under the general case of markets being anti-inductive, just because something made money the last few times doesn't mean it's a wise investment now, because the previous success has likely already driven up the price via speculation.

I heard they want to make the summer olympics permanently in Greece at the base of Mt. Olympus because it is the origin of the games. But even if that happened, I don't think it would be until 2024 at the earliest.

I think they should. It would be a cool tradition kind of like how Wimbledon is always in London

Nope. They had accepted it but then went back on it when people complained about how expensive it would be (and I think also how fuck ugly it is), and then also the architect who designed it died.

Typically if the Olympics is used as an excuse to increase capacity for things that are actually needed (transport, housing) then the Olympics does have long-term benefits

If the Olympics are used to go full Russia and build potemkin stadiums that will never be used again then it's a massive fuck-up.

Apparently Sochi is already starting to look like Pripryat now.

This is more like if Graperrape was composed entirely of Mao-era Red Guards.

I'm kind of worried myself. No one is really trying to create a larger, less restrictive arena for people to speak in. It's mostly just a game of king of the hill where the winning side gets to enforce its own political correctness onto others through threats of doxxing, brigading your employer, and so on.

See, there is a difference. If you have to keep shuffling the thing around, every time a nation has to spend a shitload of money for these stadiums that get used basically ONCE in the next 50 years, and that's the only time they got revenue for it.

If Greece got the summer olympics to STAY there, it means they only have to build that shit one time, and then they get a steady stream of income and tourism guaranteed every 4 years.

>the Tokyo 1964 Games completely transformed Japan
Not in the way people think though. It was the first live televised Olympic games, and it happened when South Africa was barred from competing due to political pressure for them to end Apartheid. The games didn't "transform" Japan so much as it proved to the world that not only had they recovered since WW2, but that the whole world saw they were no longer a fascist state.

As an Atlanta resident, I can tell you that the MARTA acronym is true and MARTA is hemorrhaging money to the point where they've have to slash bus routes and train service outside of rush hour. And outside of Centennial Olympic Park and one of the athlete dorms that got bought by GSU as student dorms, I don't think any of the purpose-built olympic buildings are still in use.
