The trend in manga and anime now is taking things that aren't supposed to be grim and making them all dark and broody.

Touhou shows an originally really grim world that was made into a much nicer and cuter place.

Weird artwork, sometimes spooky atmosphere and music, and the girls talk about kill and death sometimes while fighting, everything as ZUN intended. If I had no idea I'd mistake it as creepypasta games.
And it shows that the canon itself has been only a bit "softer" version of Japanese mythology while still retain some of its grim aspect.

For me it's the opposite.
Touhou despite being a series of all girl cast it's not something like Strike Witches, Dog Days, MGQ or recently KanColle which use the girls mainly to attract male audience. ZUN doesn't throw around sexual design or blatant fanservice, instead he gives backstories, depth on the world building and new personalities to the characters that make them less one-dimensional unlike what you often found in other media.

Sure, forced grim stuff like Another would be crap, but Touhou is not exactly Yuru Yuri, either.
To me it's just trying to be true to the setting, the mythical world full of youkai and gods.

I'm fine with it. Gensokyo is all about balance between humans and youkai. Only fitting it balances moe with grim stuff. It adds an extra layer, people forget that those qt girls are monsters. Besides waifufags should love it, if your waifu is a man eater isnt it more special when she loves you instead of killing you like many others? Moefags, shouldnt you enjoy and appreciate how innocent they can be, despite being what they are? The contrast should make your favourite moments shine all the brighter, whatever you like.

ZUN goes against mythology when he feels like it, and references it. E.g StB, Aya says vampires dont care about crosses. Oni are all friendly, the kappa are friendly too. In mythology both ate humans and terrorized them. Hell the oni we see were based on some violent ones, yet Kasen is insanely kind and peaceful.

Given she also goes out on walks, I think Remi is peaceful enough.

Vampires are also special, they dont need to attack humans, they just need blood. You could have groups donate a small amount each, no deaths. She doesn't eat much anyway, but vampires dont need to kill to feed. Other youkai just need fear or belief.

Also people don't donate blood to SDM. It's heavily implied Sakuya "prepares" human meals.

It is true that most youkai in the place don't eat humans, but not because they don't WANT to necessarily, just because they don't have to. Most would probably eat humans if given the opportunity without breaking the rules. Actually, again that's something implied by Yukari gapping in suicidal outsiders and also criminals.

Also like the other guy said, these creatures look nice because they are seen from the perspective of strong human like the protagonist. Not sure what they think of normal humans.
Kappa while friendly because ZUN base them from particular kind of civilized, advanced kappa, he still implied that they drown humans and take their shirikodama, if not being scammer.
Let's just say in Gensokyo there are good folks and also bad folks.
It's not like in Jap mythology there aren't any friendly youkai, either. Yamabiko is indeed harmless.

Gensokyo it's calm. Touhou it's full of silly characters. Akyuu concluded that the recent years it became less troublesome... The youkai have envolved into a rasonable civilization. Violence, wars, etc are not matter of the current age.

It's Gensokyo after all. A place where youkai eat humans, and humans hunt youkai, that's the balance. Some may go wild, some may not. There are rules and years of knowledge. They have found another ways of satisfy themselves

It was always grim, but almost in a gallows humor way. Partially due to how lighthearted the series was otherwise. Also because ZUN never really had a way to communicate his intent.

Now he has a medium and setting in FS with the Human Village in a larger role where he can pull it off. I think it's probably something that he always wanted.

That said it's nowhere near what Grimsokyo fans and especially Grimdarksokyo fans envision. *For the most part* it's a peaceful area. Youkai who go against this and actually try to harm a village human are more akin to a wild animal and are either exterminated or taught the rules.

It's a good balance right now. Unless you're a total autist or secondary you should have known there was always some darkness to it and be able to accept both sides without it rustling your jimmies or worrying that it might venture too far in the other direction.

You've posted this shit in multiple threads recently so it's obvious you're the same guy. You're doing absolutely nothing but applying your own assumptions and headcanons to the story and characters in the world and thinking it's the correct interpretation. Gensokyo is not completely dark nor is it completely cute, it's somewhere in between.

You've completely misread both the fortune teller scenario and what Ran truly is in order to color Gensokyo darker than it already is, which is plenty dark already. How you could possibly think he's not longer "part of the village" when he lived there his entire life and he fucking claimed ownership of his citizenry even when he came back is mind boggling. The characters explicitly state what he does is taboo and dark magic multiple times, both through Mamizou and through Reimu.

Gensokyo is dangerous because youkai are free to run around and terrorize people but it's also a place where girls battle with pretty patterns in the sky. People die, or are eaten, and it's just a fact of life. You don't need to go overboard and assume things like "a fox youkai is eternally mindbroken and tortured" or "Reimu is waiting to kill her best friend if she becomes a magician or hermit"

No, you are literally fucking with me.You don't necessarily know the entirety of a sentence in another language, but you may know some words, and you can pick out obvious mistranslations. You clearly can't fix the entire script based off of this knowledge, but you know that the line itself is wrong. This then draws the rest of the translation into question. You can't actually do anything about it because you lack the ability to retranslate the entire thing yourself, but you do know that there are issues, because if one part is obviously wrong, it is not a stretch to assume there are other obvious flaws within it.

There are two criteria to a translation: accuracy, and whether the resulting translation reads like garbage in its new language. Somebody who doesn't know Japanese can critique the latter even if he isn't qualify to comment on the former.

The fact is that providing a translation takes significantly more time and effort than pointing out that something is wrong. As I've said repeatedly - along with another poster who I believe has made zero claim to any knowledge of Japanese - pointing out that a translation is bad doesn't necessarily mean you have the skills to produce an excellent translation (and if you're going to stick something onto what is the de facto official English source, it should be.)

Ideally, to produce an excellent translation, you need someone who's truly fluent in the language, which, tragically, I'm not. If I were to try my hand at the translation, I would be compiling the English at a painstaking pace and double-checking every sentence I was unsure of against a grammar dictionary to make sure that what I'm producing is error-free.

But that's besides the point. You do not need a perfect command of Japanese to criticize a translation. Even a second-year student can point out problems with some translations (references to things that are not there, missing references to things that are there). Someone who doesn't know Japanese at all can point out that the English reads like shit, in which case, the translation is flawed. These people can and will fuck up (especially students who know more than they think to do, often with laughable results) but to claim that their skill in detecting translation flaws is therefore zero is a stupid standard.

I could read or watch or play literally any other game to see humans beating monsters. The balance of the two in Touhou and its universe is one of the reasons I like it so much. It's a very creative look on how youkai work and how a world can form.

It was bound to happen eventually. Gensokyo has two things that could probably cause an outside civilization to invade it:

It's relatively pure, so the Lunarians are implied to be considering to invade it in order to nab a new home since their old one was fairy'd.

It contains Hihi'irokane, which is effectively an unlimited source of power. That covers everyone else.

Here's hoping the invasion arc will contain both; like a non-shitty GATE.

Fairies can afford to be so carefree because they fall outside the whole human/youkai dichotomy, and are mostly left alone unless a youkai (or possibly human: hey, it's not technically cannibalism and they respawn) is really, really hungry. But, since they're given more characterization than the humans of the Human Village, they seem more...well, human then characters like Reimu, or at least more relatable.

I also don't get why anyone ever likes Gate. The basic (and I mean the VERY VERY BASIC) premise behind it is kinda neat (a modern military versus a medieval one) but that's about it. Everything else about it is garbage at best. But that's probably a subject best left to /a/.

Adding to your post, the youkai and gods simply can't thrive on ignorance. You know what too much ignorance leads to? Crime, war, sickness and death. And if all the humans that believe in the youkai and gods die, then so do they. The youkai in particular don't want to coexist with humans- It's in their nature, after all- But they must. Humans are the ones that are feeding them- Literally and rhetorically.

I wonder what would Yukari and Co. do when it's decided that the residents of Gensokyo have advanced further enough to discard their superstitious beliefs. Would a new Gensokyo be made, with new residents? Would they still struggle? Would they reverse back time to happy fun times? I guess that's up to doujinshi artists to find out.
