Pretty fantastic. I love the whole dark side of Touhou where the youkai actually straight up eats and kill people

>> No.15579005

Both grimsokyo and happysokyo are symbiotic. There's a lot of happy go lucky moments but when you look deeper, you can see pant shitting madness and grim.

>> No.15579059

I actually hate it.

One of the reason I like Touhou so much is because there was no grimdark bullshit or self insert protagnist and stuff like that. But with Touhou becoming more and more dark it gets harder to enjoy it.

>> No.15579093

>>15579059
I like how it's a reversal of the whole things turning grim stuff writers love to do.

The trend in manga and anime now is taking things that aren't supposed to be grim and making them all dark and broody.

Touhou shows an originally really grim world that was made into a much nicer and cuter place.

>> No.15579391

Good.
There's plenty of grimdark content in Touhou that gets completely buried underneath all that cute demeanor.
It's nice to finally see all of this content come to light (pun not intended).

>> No.15579407

>>15579059
The game is not exactly devoid of darker stuff, though.
Weird artwork, sometimes spooky atmosphere and music, and the girls talk about kill and death sometimes while fighting, everything as ZUN intended. If I had no idea I'd mistake it as creepypasta games.
And it shows that the canon itself has been only a bit "softer" version of Japanese mythology while still retain some of its grim aspect.

Maybe you're too much invested in fanon.

>>15579093
For me it's the opposite.
Touhou despite being a series of all girl cast it's not something like Strike Witches, Dog Days, MGQ or recently KanColle which use the girls mainly to attract male audience. ZUN doesn't throw around sexual design or blatant fanservice, instead he gives backstories, depth on the world building and new personalities to the characters that make them less one-dimensional unlike what you often found in other media.

Sure, forced grim stuff like Another would be crap, but Touhou is not exactly Yuru Yuri, either.
To me it's just trying to be true to the setting, the mythical world full of youkai and gods.

>> No.15579431

>>15579093
Now it's going grim again.
I'm fine with it. Gensokyo is all about balance between humans and youkai. Only fitting it balances moe with grim stuff. It adds an extra layer, people forget that those qt girls are monsters. Besides waifufags should love it, if your waifu is a man eater isnt it more special when she loves you instead of killing you like many others? Moefags, shouldnt you enjoy and appreciate how innocent they can be, despite being what they are? The contrast should make your favourite moments shine all the brighter, whatever you like.

When are we getting more WaHH btw?

Yeah, remember all those legends about vampires that ended with friendship?
ZUN goes against mythology when he feels like it, and references it. E.g StB, Aya says vampires dont care about crosses. Oni are all friendly, the kappa are friendly too. In mythology both ate humans and terrorized them. Hell the oni we see were based on some violent ones, yet Kasen is insanely kind and peaceful.

Canon shows wounded people outside the sdm taken in for treatment.
Remi attended a festival once beans were coffee beans, and the SDM has been known to host parties on her whims, people dont go because they dont know.
Given she also goes out on walks, I think Remi is peaceful enough.

Vampires are also special, they dont need to attack humans, they just need blood. You could have groups donate a small amount each, no deaths. She doesn't eat much anyway, but vampires dont need to kill to feed. Other youkai just need fear or belief.

Though the case remains that she was undoubtedly a troublemaker. One of the worst.

Also people don't donate blood to SDM. It's heavily implied Sakuya "prepares" human meals.

It is true that most youkai in the place don't eat humans, but not because they don't WANT to necessarily, just because they don't have to. Most would probably eat humans if given the opportunity without breaking the rules. Actually, again that's something implied by Yukari gapping in suicidal outsiders and also criminals.

Recent games has more backstories than recent games and there are few instances ZUN turning down fanon, like Aya Momiji relationship.

Also like the other guy said, these creatures look nice because they are seen from the perspective of strong human like the protagonist. Not sure what they think of normal humans.
Kappa while friendly because ZUN base them from particular kind of civilized, advanced kappa, he still implied that they drown humans and take their shirikodama, if not being scammer.
Let's just say in Gensokyo there are good folks and also bad folks.
It's not like in Jap mythology there aren't any friendly youkai, either. Yamabiko is indeed harmless.

>> No.15579609

Well something else probably worth pointing out is that, as a tsukumogami, the "rules" to Kogasa are iffy.

Like, she says she was born as a "bad" (forgotten/neglected) tsukumogami but throughout the series tries to find some other use or purpose like an ordinary tool, Then there's how she allegedly feeds off fear, but will be satisfied if you pretend to be scared. Like, maybe she was never a wicked creature to begin with.

She's probably just a baka.

Gensokyo it's calm. Touhou it's full of silly characters. Akyuu concluded that the recent years it became less troublesome... The youkai have envolved into a rasonable civilization. Violence, wars, etc are not matter of the current age.

It's Gensokyo after all. A place where youkai eat humans, and humans hunt youkai, that's the balance. Some may go wild, some may not. There are rules and years of knowledge. They have found another ways of satisfy themselves

It was always grim, but almost in a gallows humor way. Partially due to how lighthearted the series was otherwise. Also because ZUN never really had a way to communicate his intent.

Now he has a medium and setting in FS with the Human Village in a larger role where he can pull it off. I think it's probably something that he always wanted.

That said it's nowhere near what Grimsokyo fans and especially Grimdarksokyo fans envision. *For the most part* it's a peaceful area. Youkai who go against this and actually try to harm a village human are more akin to a wild animal and are either exterminated or taught the rules.

It's a good balance right now. Unless you're a total autist or secondary you should have known there was always some darkness to it and be able to accept both sides without it rustling your jimmies or worrying that it might venture too far in the other direction.

Many legends about vampires don't care about crosses - what we know as vampires arises for a whole slew of legends and myths from a variety of regions. The oni were so feared that they went underground, and it's no consolation to their victims if they're cheerful and friendly when they tear them up. The kappa are also not friendly; rather, they're false-faced 'friends' who not-so-secretly view themselves to be far above lowly humans (see Nitori's dialogue in the fighting games). Also it's odd for you to reference Kasen, given A: she may not actually be an oni (it's highly likely, but ZUN can throw a curveball) and B: she's a fraud anyway.

Even the biggest figure who argues for coexistence, Byakuren, is a total fraud of a monk who only keeps youkai around because she's terrified of losing her youth, and youkai vanishing would also cause the magic holding her together to disappear.

Marisa trains a lot and we don't know how strong she actually is. Most of her power is based on the mini-hakkero. She's also trying to become a magician, which would make her very powerful indeed.

Reimu is a Hakurei. Those are utter exceptions to all pre-established rules. That bloodline is basically "I win". They can
>float away from reality
>summon gods
>summon other spirits
>manipulate barriers with incredible skill
>perform sealing techniques
And only a few of those are things they need to train to do. Most of Reimu's power, for instance, is all natural. She barely makes any effort at all.

As for Sakuya, yeah, it would be more interesting if she was a Lunarian, I think.

The hilarious thing about touhou is that it shows that innate talent, bloodline, and family connections will beat training, hard work and guts every time. Reimu is lazy as fuck and never trains, and she's the most powerful human going. Marisa trains every day and is constantly researching, and she's essentially the weakest human who actually fights, and who was casually beaten in terms of power and skill by a teenage high school dropout from beyond the border because this girl had a better bloodline and family connections. Hell, she was beaten twice when Sumireko started coming through - another failing high school student who just happened to have strong innate power.

No he wasn't, he was a villager who invited dark magics and engaged in taboo to come back as a vengeful spirit born of negative emotions. Becoming a hermit or magician is not at all the same thing either, it is regarded as a form of enlightenment or bettering yourself for the study of magic rather than fucking killing yourself so you can revive as a youkai and give a stupid supervillain monologue.

Another critical difference is most of the humans (like Sakuya) are proud of their human heritage and have refused opportunities to change or become immortals or youkai. Not that they are bound to the rules of the village anyway.

You're missing the point in that he had formally left the village by dying, while Marisa 'eft' the village by going into the forest: 'human villager' isn't simply a question of whether one lives in the village or not, but also a question of birth. Marisa moving outside the village doesn't stop her from being a 'human from the village', and she's still bound by sacred guidelines regarding not becoming a youkai.

Oh, and:
>Becoming a hermit or magician is not at all the same thing either, it is regarded as a form of enlightenment or bettering yourself
Citation needed regarding your claim on becoming a magician as 'a form of enlightenment'. Oh, and as far as canon and Reimu care, Alice and Patchouli came into Gensokyo as youkai, so they were never humans to start with as far as she's concerned.

Get over it, guys: if Marisa moves to become a magician, Reimu will be obliged to kill her. If you want 'cute girls getting along and doing things', then I sincerely suggest you get invested into something else, like Kantai Collection or Girls und Panzer.

You've posted this shit in multiple threads recently so it's obvious you're the same guy. You're doing absolutely nothing but applying your own assumptions and headcanons to the story and characters in the world and thinking it's the correct interpretation. Gensokyo is not completely dark nor is it completely cute, it's somewhere in between.

You've completely misread both the fortune teller scenario and what Ran truly is in order to color Gensokyo darker than it already is, which is plenty dark already. How you could possibly think he's not longer "part of the village" when he lived there his entire life and he fucking claimed ownership of his citizenry even when he came back is mind boggling. The characters explicitly state what he does is taboo and dark magic multiple times, both through Mamizou and through Reimu.

Gensokyo is dangerous because youkai are free to run around and terrorize people but it's also a place where girls battle with pretty patterns in the sky. People die, or are eaten, and it's just a fact of life. You don't need to go overboard and assume things like "a fox youkai is eternally mindbroken and tortured" or "Reimu is waiting to kill her best friend if she becomes a magician or hermit"

I didn't, your reading comprehension sucks dude, I'm saying that 'part of the village' is a bloodline thing which cannot be dispensed with by going to live in the forest, which thus obliges Reimu to kill Marisa if she becomes a youkai

Also cute to see you going to defend your 'fox mama' which is essentially a computer program stealing a body - it's irrelevant whether the fox's original mind is forced into eternal dormancy or whether it's awake but can't do anything, the situation is still hellish, lol

Gensokyo's a dark place where people get hung up on the upper crust having tea parties after show fights and imagine that characters are all 'besties 5-eva~~ uwu', when in reality youkai murder humans on the reg and Reimu occasionally bothers to sally forth and beat up or kill some other youkai

Reimu's obligation is to the village and the sacred guidelines, and while I hardly imagien Reimu's panting and masturbating to the prospect of killing the world's most talentless and shitty magician, she's already admitted she's keeping an eye on her in case she does something stupid like, oh say, become a youkai

I don't give a shit about Ran lel, so nice one

You clearly have your own headcanon completely separate from anything that's actually canon. No one knows anything about the fox, whether it agreed to become a shikigami or not. Especially considering we know the cat Chen is possessing comes out every so often and doesn't freak out and plead for release from some kind of endless torture. You just assume how the character feels about its situation and want it to be darker than it is. Putting "lol" at the end of your sentence doesn't automatically make you right.

Again, you keep using "i imagine" and retarded logic to fuel your own masturbatory desires even when you blatantly get called out for being a dumbass. FS is all about Kosuzu which is entirely why Reimu is keeping an eye on her specifically, as multiple people told you.

Not on earth. Lunarian's aren't exactly immortal so much as pure: untainted by the concept of death. While in practice it's much the same (They won't age or die naturally) they have to avoid all impurity in order to stay in this "Blind spot" of death. That's why they moved to the moon, hated the Apollo program, and couldn't fight the fairies in LotLK (Who, as beings of pure life-force, necessarily taint anything they interact with with the concept of life and death).

Anyway, long story short is a Lunarian wouldn't keep their immortality long on earth, so even if Sakuya was one, she'd "revert" to human and become mortal. Then again, she can control time, so the whole point in moot. It's highly probable she's functionally immortal by slowing or stopping her own aging process, as Akyuu notes in PMiSS.

No, you are literally fucking with me.You don't necessarily know the entirety of a sentence in another language, but you may know some words, and you can pick out obvious mistranslations. You clearly can't fix the entire script based off of this knowledge, but you know that the line itself is wrong. This then draws the rest of the translation into question. You can't actually do anything about it because you lack the ability to retranslate the entire thing yourself, but you do know that there are issues, because if one part is obviously wrong, it is not a stretch to assume there are other obvious flaws within it.

There are two criteria to a translation: accuracy, and whether the resulting translation reads like garbage in its new language. Somebody who doesn't know Japanese can critique the latter even if he isn't qualify to comment on the former.

He then inferred because the English read like crap, that the translator probably wasn't much good at Japanese either. That's not always a safe assumption, though in this case it happens to be correct. I promise to update the translation if I ever muster up enough willingness.

You do, in fact, need movie knowledge to critize a movie. You don't need the knowledge of how to make a movie.

You do need knowledge of Japanese to criticize a translation, but you don't need perfect knowledge of Japanese to do so.

You can certainly criticize an overly liberal translation, or even one that is just blatantly wrong, without enough knowledge to be able to translate the line. You only need to know a few words to know that isn't what the person said without necessarily being able to fill in the rest.

You're a fucking moron who has no idea what the fuck he's saying and acting like you understand what's going on and get mad at things that aren't even a critique to your own skills, unless you're the one who translated it themselves.

Assuming I'm the same person you were arguing with earlier to tell them to fix it themselves is also cute.

You were stating straight up you didn't need any knowledge of the Japanese language outside of knowing the single portion of the problem of the entire sentence you knew was wrong to fix the entire sentence or else you just "Dont understand" and the translation is just spot on and you're the idiot and just don't understand the language. On top of that, you were fucking assuming that someone should go out of their way to fix something someone else fucked up themselves. If you're going to act like an entitled faggot you shouldn't act enraged when people don't bend over backwards trying to cater to you.

The fact is that providing a translation takes significantly more time and effort than pointing out that something is wrong. As I've said repeatedly - along with another poster who I believe has made zero claim to any knowledge of Japanese - pointing out that a translation is bad doesn't necessarily mean you have the skills to produce an excellent translation (and if you're going to stick something onto what is the de facto official English source, it should be.)

Ideally, to produce an excellent translation, you need someone who's truly fluent in the language, which, tragically, I'm not. If I were to try my hand at the translation, I would be compiling the English at a painstaking pace and double-checking every sentence I was unsure of against a grammar dictionary to make sure that what I'm producing is error-free.

But that's besides the point. You do not need a perfect command of Japanese to criticize a translation. Even a second-year student can point out problems with some translations (references to things that are not there, missing references to things that are there). Someone who doesn't know Japanese at all can point out that the English reads like shit, in which case, the translation is flawed. These people can and will fuck up (especially students who know more than they think to do, often with laughable results) but to claim that their skill in detecting translation flaws is therefore zero is a stupid standard.

>who I believe has made zero claim to any knowledge of Japanese
Yes, that's what the whole problem here is. Someone that doesn't speak Japanese coming in and saying a Japanese translation was incorrect. You could argue that maybe he does speak Japanese and therefore knows why it's wrong and in what way, but he surely did not demonstrate, even when provided with ample opportunities to do so. And this all applies to you too. Of course, there's a really quick way to prove me wrong here but you already said you don't want to do it, so don't fault me if I think it's because you can't.

That is how I would personally translate that line (if I was going for as direct a translation as possible)

But if your want to know how "を憑かせて" is generally used in japanese it's always a good idea to google it. You get stuff like: "相手に霊を憑かせて自分に良いように操作する" or (Can I) get my partner to be possessed by spirits and controlled how I like?

>It shouldn't take you several months of grueling, intense research, planning and proofreading to translate.
Where did this "several months" come from? Why does your argument always change the moment anyone fucking calls you out on your garbage? The original argument, that started before I interjected myself into the conversation, was that it was possible for people to criticize a translation without necessarily being able to provide a better one. Your response was to reply to the respondent demanding that they fix it, a dozen times over.

>You had plenty of time to do anything besides keep getting mad over nothing.
Yes, I could have spent my spare time catering to a jackass. That's miserable and irritating. Or, I could spend it enjoying myself in my spare time, or performing professional obligations, or calling you out as the jackass that you were being and still are, all of which would be more beneficial or enjoyable than laboring for your benefit.

Yes, and that is a bullshit argument for reasons already explained more than once.

It's almost like you and your split personalities kept insisting a dozen times over that yes there is totally a mistake in the Japanese translation, that yes you lot totally have the ability to tell because of Japanese knowledge, that yes the mistake bothers you and that no, you won't fix it. I think it's perfectly reasonable to question your skill at said other language given the circumstances. But hey, I'm not a faggot so what do I know.

>Yes, I could have spent my spare time showing I'm not the man with the talking ass.
Yeah, you COULD have. Hell, you CAN. You just DON'T. I don't know what motivation you have that makes you not do it, and I don't care to know either. This whole argument is still going because of one simple fact: You keep parading your Japanese knowledge like it's your life's work, when asked to demonstrate you say "nah", and then get offended when people assume you don't know Japanese after all.

If you aren't going to prove you're not the hot smoke blowing machine (or as you call it, "spend your time bowing and scraping to me") like you're acting like you are then just let go and fuck off. >Yes, and that is a bullshit argument for reasons already explained more than once.
You haven't explained it a single fucking time. Your response was to tell him to fix it.

>that yes you lot totally have the ability to tell because of Japanese knowledge
My "other personality" never claimed any Japanese knowledge. You're simply a liar.

>when asked to demonstrate you say "nah"
I said that I would. I then later engaged in a discussion of the actual issue with several other anonymous postesr. The only time I declined demonstrate is when you demanded that it be done NOW. Repeatedly.

>I bet you find the prospect of losing an internet argument to be "miserable and irritating".
There's no way in hell I can possibly lose this argument. All that's really happening is that you're getting more and more opportunities to display what a lying piece of shit you are.

I was referring to how she's described in PMiSS.

" She is unusually human-like for a youkai, and if you talk to her while she is on the job, she will make idle chatter or complain about whatever is on her mind. She may threaten you with words, but as long as you don't try to break through the gate, she will rarely attack. You would even think that the person you're talking to might be a human."

I've always thought it was an interesting aspect of Meiling's character, how despite being a youkai, she is almost entirely un-youkai-like.

It was bound to happen eventually. Gensokyo has two things that could probably cause an outside civilization to invade it:

It's relatively pure, so the Lunarians are implied to be considering to invade it in order to nab a new home since their old one was fairy'd.

It contains Hihi'irokane, which is effectively an unlimited source of power. That covers everyone else.

Here's hoping the invasion arc will contain both; like a non-shitty GATE.

I also don't get why anyone ever likes Gate. The basic (and I mean the VERY VERY BASIC) premise behind it is kinda neat (a modern military versus a medieval one) but that's about it. Everything else about it is garbage at best. But that's probably a subject best left to /a/.

>Humans should take back being at the top
Humans are ALREADY at the top. Their psychic emanations make or unmake the gods and youkai of Gensokyo. The domination Gensokyo's "most powerful" personage holds over the Human Village is tenuous and teeters on the maintained ignorance, as well as continued indifference, of the people who live therein.

The youkai speak of controlling the village. They are in truth quaking in fear of the humans growing bored with their hamlet life and expanding their village as well as their minds. It is a losing battle, and the youkai are growing desperate. Your turn.

>Shits of Gensokyo, that's what fairies are.
Hit the nail on the head, that.
Also, I like the irony that Cirno is considered weak only to other youkai.

Adding to your post, the youkai and gods simply can't thrive on ignorance. You know what too much ignorance leads to? Crime, war, sickness and death. And if all the humans that believe in the youkai and gods die, then so do they. The youkai in particular don't want to coexist with humans- It's in their nature, after all- But they must. Humans are the ones that are feeding them- Literally and rhetorically.

I wonder what would Yukari and Co. do when it's decided that the residents of Gensokyo have advanced further enough to discard their superstitious beliefs. Would a new Gensokyo be made, with new residents? Would they still struggle? Would they reverse back time to happy fun times? I guess that's up to doujinshi artists to find out.

Literally some of that stuff has already happened and was mostly caused by youkai. Sickness, war, and death to be exact, and probably crime depending on what is defines crime in Gensokyo.

And all that, just so they could preserve the lives of a few worthless youkai and deities that no one cares about. But such is life in Gensokyo.

Cirno actually isn't a youkai; yet. It's been pretty much confirmed that fairies exist independently of youkai, including in places like hell where there is presumably no mortal humans to derive belief frome.

However, like humans, fairies have the potential to become youkai.

Funny enough, if you go by the original Celtic origins of fairies as well as the fact that they're able to be strengthened by prayer, fairies are possibly heavily nerfed deities.

Pretty much, every discussion or argument I've ever engaged in or seen is just:
"HA! You didn't know/remember this specific piece of lore/information. You stupid secondary!"
Any argument or discussion just seems to boil down to a contest in seeing who can call each other a secondary fast enough.

After several years, I've really found it exhausting, those stupid terms have really destroyed this fandom.

The fairy world was the realm of the dead. When someone died in one of the two worlds, they were reborn in the other.

Also, the Celts only had a proper afterlife because their ancestor was a badass called "The Dark Man" who died, beat up all the natives in the other world and forced them to yield land to him.
