This "fight" from 7th episode is the best thing in whole series.

>that feeling of absolute despair when you know, that you don't have chance
>that feeling when all of your chances are dissapearing
>that feeling when all of the story is pure despair and heartbreaking end
>that feeling when Beatrice died in despair, thinking that there are no happy ending, but you will try to help her
>and you die, crushed by merciless cat mom
>"The Executioner", full volume
>Bernkastel laugh

This was literally my life. I fight with depression and try to not reach bad ending. And for a lot of years I was sure that there will be bad ending. I was sure that no one will save me. But I fought till the end. And I found my Willard.
Now, thanks to forbidden miracle I'm happy and on my path to happy ending. And still "The Executioner" is my favourite song.

Regarding the ending of Episode 6, how does Erika say in red that she's the "18th human on Rokkenjima"? It's red which means it has to be true, but then Battler says that there are only "17 people"

I assume it has something to do with the distinction between 'human' (which Erika says) and 'person'/'people' (which Battler says), but I'm still now completely sure how it's supposed to be explained

>> No.15579042

It isn't really incoherent though, the Japanese text has always made a distinction between 人 (person) and 人間 (human). This is the case in all the Episodes, but I'm not completely sure what the difference between them is supposed to be

>>15579042
Basically, a 人/person isn't necessarily a human. Shannon and Kanon are always referred to as 人 in red because they're two people who are part of the same 人間/human being. Whenever Beatrice says that there are "no more than 18 humans" on the island, she always uses "19人以上の人間" which literally translates to something like "(not) 19 or more people who are human beings".

Now for the explanation of game 6. When they're talking about the windows earlier, Battler confirms to Erika in red that one 人 refers to one body. This isn't the case in any of the other games, but Battler still says so in red, which means that it's true for this one. So basically, in Episode 6 (and only Episode 6), 人 refers to body and not person. When Battler announces that there are "17人" at the end, he's really saying that there are 17 bodies if you include Erika's

And lastly, the 18th human. According to the manga, Erika was apparently declaring the numer of names, while Battler declared the number of bodies. I'm not completely sure how that's supposed to work, but that's what it says regardless

I'm not 100% sure about this, but the way I understand it, Kinzo is supposed to be removed from the count of people. Earlier in the Episode, someone asks Battler to remove Kinzo from the term 'everyone', since he doesn't exist anymore

This explains why there are 17 bodies, even though there should have been 18 with Erika+Kinzo

It also explains why there are only 18 names when Erika declares them in red. Yasu counts as both Shannon and Kanon, so if Kinzo is included there would have been 19 names if you add Erika's

it's stated that he's removed because he's dead, and that the 'people' in the count now referred to 'living people'. Erika's DOA according to the tips. I'm not sure how it is in the Japanese, but if Kinzo doesn't count, Erika doesn't either. she can be the '18th person' regardless, because it doesn't necessarily follow the same rules as the count, meaning that, she is the '18th person' as an extra added onto the confirmed 17.

>> No.15581060

>>15581027
But the last part won't work. She's saying that she's the 18th 'name' on the island. If you count Kinzo as well, there are 19 names since Yasu has 2

basically
18 humans = number of personalities
17 = number of (living) bodies
18 because shannon and kanon are two separate personalities, plus erika
17 people + erika = 18
17 because kinzo is dead, and shannon and kanon are the same person. so-
18-1-1 = 16 bodies + erika, which is 17

"Episode 1: Legend of the Golden Witch" Explained - Part 1 out of 2

>Culprits:

-Yasu is the killer
-Nanjo provides fake diagnoses and cover-up
-Genji provides the muscle for moving the bodies and cover-up
-Maria places the letters and provides the magic circles
-Eva and Hideyoshi also know some details and provide cover-up, especially when it comes to the "death" of Shannon

Furthermore, although a red truth forbids poison gases ([red]"There was no poison gas, there was no drowning, there was no death by suffocation!!"[/red]), I still presume most of the victims' food or drinks were drugged to make Yasu able to overpower them. Also, the Red Truth says nothing about gases that do not cause death, or substances such as formalin and chloroform that could possibly knock out the person, or at least disorient them to make them easier to deal with.

>First Twilight:

Six bodies were found in the tool-shed, their faces smashed apart, with a magic circle on the shutter. The six were Krauss, Kyrie, Rudolf, Godha, Rosa and Shannon. Out of the six, only Shannon was surely identified thanks to her ring. The shed was locked by a key that was in the servants' quarters.

! Red Truths !
[red]"the identities of all unidentified corpses are guaranteed"[/red] (Used by Lambdadelta in ????? for Episode 1.)

-Explanation:
The method of the murder is irrelevant. Based on the blood-stains in the dining hall, the actual killing caused only minor bleeding, so it was either a relatively small stab wound, or, more likely, blunt force trauma directly to the head. Either way, the end result is the same.

The faces were destroyed to protect Yasu's identity as Shannon/Kanon and to keep the modus operandi consistent. It is also notable that neither George (the person closest to her who was not in on the murders) nor Battler (our only reliable narrator) have seen her face, only Hideyoshi.

However, it is quite possible that Eva and Hideyoshi are forced or bribed into becoming Yasu's accomplices at this point, thus it is not only possible that Hideyoshi lied and Shannon's corpse weren't even there, but highly probable.

The funniest thing though is that the Red Truth regarding unidentified corpses specifically allows Shannon's corpse to be non-guaranteed. One one hand, it is described as being only half-smashed and thus she was not "unidentified". On the other hand, there was no "corpse" to begin with (as in, Yasu was either still alive or there was no body at all to begin with). In short, Yasu dodges the Red not once but twice!

#Special Circumstances
Maria's involvement was made especially obvious by the magic circle, which was more than likely drawn by her on the first place, thus explaining why she knew so much about it. The same goes for all the other magic symbols throughout the episode. The circumstances relating to the shed's key and the locked mansion doors are irrelevant, as the servants have the keys for both.

#Kinzo's disappearance:

In the morning, Eva "sealed" the door to Kinzo's study with a receipt so that she would know if the door was opened afterwards. When they later enter the room again and Kinzo was missing, she questions Natsuhi about how Kinzo could have disappeared without opening the door.

However, Kinzo was never in his room to begin with, so there was no-one to leave on the first place. I think it is pretty self-explanatory.

>Second Twilight:

Eva and Hideyoshi were killed in their own room. They had to cut the door-chain to get inside, and in there they were found with stakes in their foreheads. Eva was on the bed, out of view from the door, while Hideyoshi was in the shower.

! Red Truths !
[red]"Both were killed by another person!"[/red] (This is referring to the second twilight of Episode 1.)
[red]"It is not the case that, after the construction of the closed room, one of them committed suicide after committing murder!"[/red]
[red]"Furthermore, the murder was carried out with both the victim and the perpetrator in the same room!"[/red]
[red]"No method exists for the perpetrator to commit murder from outside the room!"[/red]

-Explanation:
The method of the murder is, once again, irrelevant. It was shown that, through the unreliable narration, the servants could have murdered the two any way they wanted to (though Yasu probably just shot them) and then stake them and position their bodies however they wanted.

The stakes were drilled into their bodies postmortem, or rather they were played in the gun-wounds, the effect is the same.

The closed room is solved by the unreliable narration. Contrary to what is "shown", the following is what really happened: They opened the door with the master key, Kanon cut the chain, they killed the two, and then pretended to find the corpses alongside the rest of the family and that they only just recently "had to cut the chain" to get inside.

>Fourth Twilight:

Kinzo's body was found in the furnace of the boiler room, with a stake in his forehead. His body was charred and could only be identified by his extra toe.

-Explanation:
Kinzo was not murdered, he has been dead for a while thanks to natural causes. His body was hidden in the furnace and was recently doctored by adding the stake to his forehead.

>Fifth Twilight:

Kanon was found on the floor of the boiler room, bloodied with an apparent wound on his chest, with the bloody stake next to him.

! Red Truths !
[red]"Kanon did not die in an accident!"[/red] (This refers to Kanon's death in Episode 1.)
[red]"Kanon did not commit suicide"[/red]
[red]"All of the survivors have alibis! Let us include the dead as well!! In short, no kind of human or dead person on the island could have killed Kanon!"[/red]

-Explanation:
Kanon wasn't murdered either. He faked his death with the help of Nanjo's fake diagnosis. No one has actually seen him being stabbed, with the stake in his chest, and people only judged how serious his injury was based on the bloodstain on the stake. There is no objective observation about him being actually wounded.

>The Witch's Third Letter:

Everyone is locked in Kinzo's study, when a letter appears on the table while they weren't looking.

-Explanation:
Maria put the letter there. She was the one who pointed it out on the first place, and the goal of the letter was to single the accomplices out so that they could get out of the study.

>Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Twilights:

Genji's, Kumasawa's and Nanjo's bodies were found in the lounge, their faces smashed and the bodies mangled. Maria was found facing the wall and singing, and she says she was told to do so by the witch. The door was locked from the inside.

! Red Truths !
[red]"Maria, who was in the same room, did not kill them!"[/red] (This is referring to the deaths of Genji, Nanjo, and Kumasawa in Episode 1.)
[red]"Genji, Kumasawa, and Nanjo are not killers."[/red] (This refers to their deaths in Episode 1.)
[red]"And of course, the three were killed by other people!"[/red]
[red]"Regarding the unidentified corpses, all of their identities are guaranteed. Therefore, no body double tricks exist!"[/red]

-Explanation:
The three were killed by Yasu. It is entirely possible they were drugged beforehand, though not necessary. Maria was on the sidelines during all this.

The door was locked by Maria from the inside to create the illusion of a locked room.

>Natsuhi's Death:

Natsuhi appeared to have had committed suicide by shooting herself in the forehead in the hallway. It appeared there is no one left on the island who could have done it.

! Red Truths !
[red]"Natsuhi was killed by another person!"[/red] (This is referring to Natsuhi's death in Episode 1.)
[red]"There are no unidentified corpses, and all of the survivors have alibis!"[/red]
[red]"The bullet buried into Natsuhi's forehead was not fired from Natsuhi's gun!"[/red]
[red]"The thing that shot Natsuhi wasn't a trap, it was a real shooting murder with a gun raised and trigger pulled!"[/red] (This refers to her death in Episode 1.)

-Explanation:
There was more than one gun to begin with, and so Yasu was easily able to kill Natsuhi while the cousins were locked inside the lounge. By the time they got out, Yasu was gone, replaced her gun with the killer weapon, and so it appeared that Natsuhi shot herself once the cousins found her.

"Episode 2: Turn of the Golden Witch" Explained - Part 1 out of 3

>Culprits:
-Yasu is the killer.
-Genji is the main accomplice, but he only sets things up for her.
-Godha was probably threatened or paid off into playing along.
-Rosa was the front-woman.

>Rosa's Motivation:

This time Rosa plays the same role as Eva in EP1: she provides the argument with Battler and nudges him towards the truth. The reason why she would side with Yasu is complex. First off, she needs money. She also had a bad relationship with her siblings. Finally, she learns that Kinzo is dead and his death was kept secret. That, combined with the gold in Yasu's possession, would mean that she had all the financial and psychological incentive to betray her siblings.

>Maria's candy:

Maria's candy was destroyed by Rosa but then Beatrice used "magic" to fix it in front of Rosa and Maria.

-Explanation:

The method itself is quite obvious, but nevertheless it gives some insight into the events: It was specifically shown that Kanon had a pumpkin candy that was given to him by Maria earlier, but she didn't accept it when he tried to give it back after her own candy was destroyed because it wasn't the same candy. After that, all that's needed was a simple sleight of hand as Beatrice. She specifically asked Maria to close her eyes, therefore allowing the magic/deception. Rosa "witnessing" the magic and later reporting on it also solidifies her status as an accomplice.

>The letter:

Rosa is given the first letter by Beatrice.

-Explanation:
Contrast with the first episode. Note that she is not dressed as the witch Beatrice but instead in the more "contemporary" costume, meaning the meeting probably did happen for real and it was Yasu in disguise. Yasu wants to give the letter to Maria like in EP1 but is interrupted by Rosa, therefore she appears in front of her as well.

>\Guest\ Beatrice's Identity:

An actual 19th(sic) person, Beatrice, appeared on the island. She was seen by Rosa, Maria and Kyrie and was acknowledged by the servants.

-Explanation:
Rosa and Maria seeing her was clearly a pseudo-event, therefore the narration cannot be trusted. Considering the later events, it is fairly certain that Rosa became an accomplice at that point. However, Kyrie's account, while the narrated event is still doubtful, can be considered genuine, as she stated that she met her in front of Battler and was killed in the first twilight, therefore it can be said with a high certainty that she wasn't an accomplice who would lie about something like this.

Therefore, it is fairly certain that there was an actual person dressed as Beatrice. It is also notable that she did not address herself as Beatrice and that Kyrie noted her resemblance to the portrait, meaning it is almost certain that it was Yasu.

>Maria's occult knowledge:

Maria knows an awful lot of things about magic circles and the like without any possible source.

-Explanation:
It was established that she learned it from 'Beatrice'. Since Yasu has access to Kinzo's study and it was shown that Kinzo's books also contain these circles, it is reasonable to assume that this was the chain of knowledge, and it also explains how Maria instantly recognizes the specific magic circles, since they have been taught to her in advance.

"Episode 2: Turn of the Golden Witch" Explained - Part 2 out of 3

>First Twilight:

Krauss, Eva, Rudolf, Natsuhi, Hideyoshi and Kyrie were found in the chapel around a table full of Halloween decorations and with three gold bars. Their stomachs were cut open and stuffed with sweets.

! Red Truths !
[red]"Regardless of whether they were living or dead, the six people definitely entered through the door"[/red] (Refers to the six murders in the chapel.)
[red]"Only one key to the chapel exists"[/red]
[red]"It is impossible to unlock the lock to the chapel without the chapel's key"[/red]
[red]"When the door to the chapel is locked, it prevents any and all methods of entry or exit"[/red]
[red]"Six people definitely entered through 'this front door'"[/red]
[red]"This morning, Rosa definitely took an envelope out of Maria's handbag, and thereby obtained the genuine key to the chapel"[/red] (This morning refers to the morning of the second day.)
[red]"The key to the chapel truly was the object inside the envelope I gave Maria"[/red]
[red]"The letter that I handed over to Maria and the one Rosa opened are the same thing"[/red]
[red]"Starting when Maria's key was received, and until the instant Rosa unsealed it the next day, it passed through no one's hands!!"[/red]
[red]"When the six were killed in the chapel, the culprit was inside the chapel!"[/red]

-Explanation:
There are two possibilities: The six victims were either knocked out and were taken to the chapel during the night, or they went there on their own accord in order to meet with Beatrice and got put to sleep/poisoned during the meeting. The latter would also explain the gold bars found at the scene.

The door was never locked to begin with, so they needed no key. Whether the table was prepared beforehand or during the night is inconsequential. Once they were unconscious/dead, their stomachs were cut open by Yasu (therefore fulfilling #10) and they were filled up with sweets.

Then, in the morning, Rosa went to the cousin's room to get the key (or rather, to get Maria's notebook for the magic circle but took the key as well, fulfilling #6, #7 and #9. Once the preparations were complete they called for Nanjo and the cousins followed, thus allowing Battler to witness the scene.

This time around the circle wasn't Maria's doing but Rosa's, as it was directly foreshadowed that she had access to Maria's notebook with the detailed drawings.

The gold bars are explained by that Yasu's presence who had solved the epitaph a while back, thus giving her the money needed for the bribery of Rosa and others.

"Episode 2: Turn of the Golden Witch" Explained - Part 3½/3
(I know, I fucked up. Too much text with pretty horrible intervals, because of 4chan's limited word count for each post)

>Second Twilight:

Jessica is found dead in her room with a stake in her back. The room was locked from the outside and Kanon's body was missing.

! Red Truths !
[red]"The only master keys are the ones that each servant holds, one per person"[/red] (Used by Beatrice in Chapter 12: A Suspect.)
[red]"there are absolutely no types of hidden doors"[/red] (The location in discussion refers to Jessica's room.)
[red]"This door is the only way in or out"[/red]
[red]"The only way to lock this door is with Jessica's single key or the master keys, only one of which is held by each servant"[/red]
[red]"the window is locked from the inside"[/red]
[red]"Kanon was killed in this room"[/red]
[red]"When locked, entry is not possible by any means"[/red]
[red]"No trick could have the effect of locking the door from the outside without using a key"[/red]
[red]"There are no hidden doors in this room"[/red] (This text refers back to Statement 12, in the same context.)
[red]"There is no way to get in or out other than the door and the window"[/red]
[red]"Entry or exit is impossible except for the single door and single window"[/red]
[red]"And those were both locked"[/red]
[red]"The door and the window do not permit any kind of entry or exit when they are locked"[/red]
[red]"No one exists in this room except all of you. 'All of you' refers to Battler, George, Maria, Rosa, Genji, Gohda, and Shannon"[/red]
[red]"When Jessica's corpse was discovered, only Battler, George, Maria, Rosa, Genji, Gohda, Shannon, Kumasawa, and Nanjo were in Jessica's room"[/red]
[red]"[Whoops, the corpse of] Jessica is also included"[/red]
[red]"Therefore, both in the case of Jessica's room and the case in this servants' room, no humans exist that are you were not aware of"[/red]
[red]"No one is hiding"[/red]
[red]"Regarding the window, no method exists by which it could somehow be locked from the outside"[/red]

-Explanation:
Yasu discarded Kanon while inside the room (fulfilling #6) and killed Jessica by stabbing her in the back. Afterwards Yasu used her second master key (established by #4) to lock the door from the outside and then changed into Shannon.

The magic circle on the outside of the door was written up using Maria's notes.

The master-key issue is circumvented by Yasu actually having two master keys, therefore she could lock the door with Shannon's key.

A huge number of red truths referring to this "closed room" is inconsequential, since they are just denying Battler's random potshots at the solution.

The reason why the door was locked on the first place with a master-key can have multiple reasons. First off, it could have been used to put the blame on Kanon and thus let the rest of the servants move freely (which was torpedoed by Battler), but it could have also been a deliberate clue by Yasu for Battler to pick up on, namely the explanation as of why Kanon would have two master keys.

>Misplaced Corpses:

Kumasawa and Nanjo were killed in the servants', apparently by Kanon, but their bodies are missing. The door was closed.

! Red Truths !
[red]"[Those are] kept in the key box in center of the servants' room"[/red] (Used by Beatrice in Chapter 14: Devil's Proof. The location in discussion refers to the servants' room.)
[red]"[There are several keys to the servants' room, but] all of those are inside the key box"[/red]
[red]"Entry or exit is impossible except for the single door and single window"[/red]
[red]"And those were both locked"[/red]
[red]"The door and the window do not permit any kind of entry or exit when they are locked"[/red]
[red]"it is impossible to unlock the door without a key to the servants' room or the master key"[/red]
[red]"No one exists in this room except your group. 'Your group' refers to Battler, George, Maria, Rosa, Genji, Gohda, and Shannon"[/red]
[red]"No one is hiding"[/red]
[red]"No method exists by which the door can be locked from the outside without using a key"[/red]
[red]"Regarding the window, no method exists by which it could somehow be locked from the outside"[/red]

-Explanation:
The faux closed room was created on the notion that the servants told the truth. In reality, they were killed and then moved without problem.

Their bodies were found outside later, also making them into the 7th and 8th Twilight victims, though it's fairly certain they were killed before the death of Gohda, George and Shannon in Natsuhi's room.

Again, the large amount of Red Truths stem from Battler asking the wrong questions in-story.

"Episode 2: Turn of the Golden Witch" Explained - Part 3½/3 (下)

>The 4th, 5th and 6th Twilights:

Gohda's, George's and Shannon's bodies were found in Natsuhi's room. The room was locked. Inside, Gohda's body was found by the door with a stake in his chest, George's body was found on the floor at the back with a stake in his stomach and Shannon's body was found on the drawer, with a hole on her forehead and a stake next to her.

! Red Truths !
[red]"Natsuhi's room was exactly the same, just like usual"[/red] (In this case, usual refers to the closed room scenarios prior.)
[red]"The door and the windows were locked from the inside"[/red]
[red]"There is no fraud or trick, there is no means of secret passage and no hidden place"[/red]
[red]"Natsuhi's own key was in George's pocket, and the inside of the room was closed off"[/red]
[red]"Only the five master keys were left, and 'Rosa' was holding all of them"[/red]
[red]"And let me say this, the parlor's the same"[/red]
[red]"The original key to the parlor is sealed in the servants' room. So unlocking it without the master key is impossible! The definition of a closed room is the same as always!"[/red]
[red]"After the master keys came into Rosa's control, never did any of them leave her hands! Except for the time when she lent it to Battler to unlock Natsuhi's room."[/red]

-Explanation:
This is a tough one, but thankfully Ryukishi comes to the rescue with the following quote from an interview:

_________________________
Interviewer: "Still, the locked room in Natsuhi’s chamber is a special case. If Shannon actually committed suicide, there is nobody who can get rid of the weapon. If you think of Genji finalizing that, then it just happens smoothly, but…hmm *laugh*."

R07: "Because we have come so far, I think I can give you an answer, though it is basically the same trick as with the well. Shannon died face down, slumped over the makeup cabinet. It’s a really simple trick. You tie the weapon to a heavy object with a string, then you throw the heavy object behind the cabinet. And then it’s the classic trick, when you commit suicide, the gun is pulled behind the cabinet towards the heavy object."

Interviewer: "So that’s how it went?!"

R07: "I thought, because you solved the riddle of the well as well, that you would get this trick without any problem. I especially wrote that she was "slumped over, face down, over the makeup cabinet". And while the other two in the room were actually pierced by the stakes, Shannon was not. That is why you can imagine her being the last to die in that room, because there was nobody left to insert the stake into the gunwound. There was never a full inspection of that special room, so that means that the weapon was left within it."
_________________________

With that said, the following can be concluded: Shannon killed both Gohda and George, locked the door from the inside, put the Key into George's pocket, and then committed suicide in the fashion described in the interview.

As for why Shannon/Yasu committed suicide, the best answer would be that she lost faith in Battler after his breakdown in the servants' room.
Note that Yasu's original plans involved her dying no matter what and that the trick for hiding the murder weapon was probably only there to give another clue to Battler.

>The Final Letter:

Battler finds a sealed letter inside the parlor. The doors and windows were all locked.

-Explanation:
It was Rosa who put the letter there. It was explicitly shown that she went back and checked all the windows before they left, giving her ample time to leave the letter there.

>The Final Scenes:

Genji leads Battler into Kinzo's study where he meets with Kinzo and Beatrice.

-Explanation:
We do know for sure that Kinzo is dead from the very beginning, so the entire scene is in the pseudo-realm. Since Battler is drunken at this point, it absolves his detective-privileges of objective observation.

A few days ago I started working on a PS3 art patch for the Steam release, but I am having some trouble repacking the assets into an arc.nsa file using nsaarc. Character portraits and other (PNG) seem to be displaying just fine, yet backgrounds (BMP) on the other hand, would end up noticeably zoomed in. I have resized and adjusted both portraits and backgrounds to fit the game, with all backgrounds having the exact same height and width as the game window.

There's also the problem in which, while using nsaout to extract the assets from the original arc.nsa, many, if not all of the bmp files would appear unreadable, including the original backgrounds, effects, and menu elements. If anyone would happen to have any knowledge concerning the extraction and repacking of nsa files, I'd very much appreciate some guidance.

There was an explosion != Kinzo had a clock in the basement that would explode at midnight if he turned a switch, and someone flipped that switch at some time. The direct cause of the explosion has to be something hinted at in the story.

Sure, he spoke out against rigidly following the Knox rules, but he wouldn't have mentioned them in his story unless he followed their spirit or thought he had something better. "Episode 3: Banquet of the Golden Witch" Explained - Part 1 out of 4

>Culprits:

-Yasu (she commits the original First Twilight murders)
-Eva (secondary killer, the main culprit once things get out of hand from the Second Twilight and onwards)
-Nanjo (accomplice in the First Twilight, once again supplying the fake death diagnoses and drugs)
-Hideyoshi (provides alibi for Eva during the Second Twilight)

>The Death of Shannon and Kanon:

In this episode's establishing scenes, the part between the cousins at the beach was very important, as this time around Battler specifically noted that a.) Shannon was his first love, and more importantly b.) that he believed that his memory could be jogged to the point where he could remember what he said six years ago, which might just been enough motivation to explain how the Beatrice persona was able to cast away the other two personae, explaining how both of them 'died' during the first twilight.

Alternatively, if you subscribe to the idea that Yasu is not so crazy and that her personae are just facets of her true personality instead of separate entities, it is entirely possible that the "death" of both Shannon and Kanon was a lot more pragmatic, necessitated by the First Twilight's closed room chain.

>1st Twilight:

Six bodies are found in locked rooms, with magic circles painted on the doors. The first body is Shannon's, it was found on the first floor parlor by breaking through a window. She had her master key and an envelope with the key for the second floor guest room. In that room, Kumasawa's body was found with her master key and another envelope with the key for the third floor waiting room. In that room, Gohda's corpse was found with his master key and an envelope with the key to the second floor VIP room. In that room, Genji's corpse was found with his master key and an envelope with the key to the underground boiler room. In that room, Kinzo's body was found, with the key to the chapel. Finally, inside the chapel, Kanon's body was found with his master key and the key to the first floor parlor, which closed the circle.

! Red Truths !

[red]"There are five, one for each servant."[/red] (Used by Beatrice in Chapter 9: Skirmish. It refers to the master keys in this game.)
[red]"Furthermore, all of the doors and windows in the 6 rooms are normal."[/red] (The six rooms in this statement refers to the parlor, the chapel, the boiler room, the VIP room, the waiting room, and the guest room.)
[red]"No device exists which can lock them without a key, such as an auto-lock."[/red]
[red]"6 people: Kinzo, Genji, Shannon, Kanon, Gohda, and Kumasawa are dead!"[/red]
[red]"There is no one hiding in the six rooms!"[/red]
[red]"The six people died instantly!"[/red]
[red]"Only the victims are inside the rooms, and no other people exist inside the rooms."[/red] (Used by Ronove.)
[red]"The six people were not killed by traps"[/red] (Used by Beatrice.)
[red]"None of the six people committed suicide!"[/red]
[red]"All five master keys were discovered, each in the pocket of one of the servants!"[/red] (This is referring to the first twilight of Episode 3.)
[red]"The individual keys were found inside envelopes alongside the corpses!"[/red]
[red]"In short, all keys related to the linked closed rooms were locked inside the linked closed rooms!!"[/red]
[red]"The keys cannot be returned from outside the room using the crack of the door, the crack of the window, vents or any place of the sort!!"[/red]
[red]"All of them had wounds resembling gunshot wounds which became fatal!"[/red]
[red]"It is impossible for the murder to have taken place from outside the room!!"[/red]
[red]"I shall say more with the red! When the five other than Kinzo were murdered, the murderer was definitely in the same room!"[/red]
[red]"I already proclaimed in red at the time that there were no suicides!!"[/red]

-Explanation:

Its trick was relatively simple to figure out once one takes the sequence of the rooms into account, namely that there was only one order they could be opened. The chain had to start with the first floor parlor, as it was the only room which had windows that could be reached from the outside. After Shannon's (fake) corpse was found inside, the adults had moved on the the next room. Notice the sequence: first floor, second floor, third floor, second floor, basement. Because of this, they had to spend a considerable amount of time moving from place to place, and after they left the parlor, it stopped being a closed room because of the broken window. Thus Shannon got up, left the room through said window, changed into Kanon and entered the chapel, all the while the adults kept running around in the mansion, giving her ample time to do so. The chapel door was, once again, open from the beginning, so she just had to enter, close the door behind her and then fake Kanon's death.

"Episode 3: Banquet of the Golden Witch" Explained - Part 2 out of 4

>The Gold:

In this episode, Eva apparently solved the Epitaph and found the hidden room on the island with the gold. It is established for sure that the VIP room and the gold is real. Also, Eva's train of thought falls exactly in line with the official explanation of the riddle, therefore it is fairly sure that she really did find the gold.

>2nd Twilight:

Maria and Rosa's corpses were found in the rose garden. Rosa's body was on the fence, with her medulla oblongata skewered by a pointy ornament on the fence (for the less medically inclined, the medulla oblongata is the area where the brain and the spinal cord connect to each other, stabbing through here is more or less 100% fatal, it's literally stabbing into the brain itself through the hole at the bottom of the skull). Maria was apparently strangled barehanded.

! Red Truths !
[red]"Rosa and Maria died"[/red] (Used by Beatrice in Chapter 13: Warning of Sacrifices.)
[red]"The cause of death was as Nanjo diagnosed"[/red] (The diagnosis for Maria and Rosa were bare handed strangling and a stab to the medulla oblongata with the pointed gate of the fence, respectively.)
[red]"Rosa and Maria were killed by other people"[/red] (Used by Ronove in Beatrice's stead.)
[red]"I was in the room the whole time"[/red] (Used by Ushiromiya Hideyoshi in EVA-Beatrice's stead in Chapter 17: The Witch's Courtroom. The room is referring to the guest house second (sic!) floor room.)
[red]"Both before and after the time period of the crime"[/red]

-Explanation:
Eva spells out what happened. The culprit attacked Rosa, she fell back and accidentally skewered her head on the fence. The witness, Maria, was killed via strangling because the guest house was too close and the culprit wanted to avoid firing a gun and gain the adults' attention. As for who the culprit was, Eva is the obvious answer.

We were shown that she had a meta-event during the murders ("dreaming" about the death of the two), only Hideyoshi was providing her alibi, and she could easily get out through the window and get back unnoticed (the Umineko Wiki's red truth page is mistaken in #4 when referring to this twilight, as Hideyoshi's and Eva's room was actually on the 1st floor).

The reason why Eva attacked Rosa was probably because of her paranoid mistrust of her telling the siblings about the gold. It is also quite possible that at least Rosa's death was accidental, as in Eva only tried to get the gun from Rosa, who then slipped and accidentally hit her head the worst way possible. After this things just spiraled out of control by themselves.

Also note the change in modus operandi: This is the first time the stakes weren't involved in a twilight past the first one, which is also a clue about there being a different culprit.

Also, if we try to incorporate the meta-even into the explanation, it is possible that Maria was actually strangled by Yasu instead of Eva, though it makes little difference either way.

>4th, 5th and 6th Twilights:

The bodies of Rudolf, Kyrie and Hideyoshi were found in the hall of the mansion, with the usual staking pattern, after they volunteered to go there and get food.

! Red Truths !
[red]"Kyrie was thinking that food was unnecessary"[/red] (Used by EVA-Beatrice. The scenario in question is the event where Rudolf, Kyrie, and Hideyoshi went outside to get food.)
[red]"she claimed that they should not leave the guesthouse"[/red]
[red]"[And yet, she herself] suggested that they leave the guesthouse to get food"[/red]
[red]"the reason she changed her mind was not told to anyone, nor was it written down"[/red]
[red]"Until the last instant before she died, Kyrie preserved her pattern of behavior which states 'not going to get food=not going to the mansion'"[/red]
[red]"Kyrie did not leave anything written down"[/red]

-Explanation:
The murders were committed by Eva, possibly with the help of Yasu. Eva could freely exit her room through the window in her room in the guest house and enter the mansion through the parlor's broken window. It also isn't wholly unthinkable that the victims were killed elsewhere and were hauled into the hall later, explaining their disheveled clothes. The stakes were drilled into their bullet holes postmortem by Yasu, as usual.

The reason why Kyrie and Rudlof wanted to get out was because they suspected that Hideyoshi was covering for Eva and wanted to detain and question him (explaining #1-3). Eva killed the two to cover her tracks.

Hideyoshi is a special case, as it is assumed that Kyrie, who didn't receive a fatal wound, tried to shoot Eva, but Hideyoshi shielded her. However, he didn't die instantly, so Eva returned to the guest house and rushed everyone to the crime scene to save him (note that she specifically requested Nanjo to come along), but by the time they got there Yasu had already done the stakings and thus killed Hideyoshi for good.

"Episode 3: Banquet of the Golden Witch" Explained - Part 3 out of 4

>7th and 8th Twilights:

Krauss and Natsuhi had disappeared from the lobby, apparently during the few minutes while Eva was away in the bathroom. Their bodies were found under the arbor in the rose garden. The cause of death was strangulation by wire and they had the usual staking.

-Explanation:
It was actually noted that Eva made coffee for everyone, allowing her to drug them with sleeping pills (which could have come from either Rosa, since it was shown she had 'tantrum pills' for Maria, or Nanjo). Note that the cousins who had from the same coffee also fell asleep. Once the two had fallen unconscious Eva strangled them and dragged them outside.

#Special Circumstances
Again, the staking was done postmortem by Yasu.

>George's Death:

George disappeared from the guest house at the same time as Krauss and Natsuhi. His body was found in the mansion's parlor, with the numbers 07151129 freshly written on the locked door.

! Red Truths !
[red]"George did not go down the stairs of the guest house."[/red] (This is referring to George's disappearance from the guest house in Episode 3.)
[red]"All windows and doors leading to the outside were locked from the inside."[/red]
[red]"Furthermore, it is impossible to lock any of those from outside!"[/red]

-Explanation:
Tricky wording. George really didn't "go" down the stairs, he was carried down by Yasu while still unconscious during the time Eva was hauling the bodies of Krauss and Natsuhi out to the arbor.

She then took him back to the parlor where he was killed.

Since Eva doesn't call Shannon out on the murder in the parlor, it is safe to assume that while Eva probably met Yasu when she discovered the gold, she doesn't know about Yasu's alternate identities.

The number on the door has two different significances. If you break it up into two parts, as 0715 and 1129, it creates two dates, Battler's birthday (July 15th) and the day Shannon solved the epitaph (November 29th), linking the two. However, as it is later revealed, it is also the pin-code of the safes that were sent to the families of the victims as "compensation".

>Eva and Yasu:

I hereby present my case of why Yasu and Eva worked together but Eva was unaware of Yasu also being Shannon and Kanon by logical order:

-George's body was found in the parlor alongside with Shannon's.
-Eva adored her son and would not have killed him, no matter how unhinged she got.
-Therefore the only person who could have killed George was Yasu.
-If Eva knew Yasu was Shannon, she would have shot her on the spot in retaliation. She didn't, therefore she didn't know.

However, she had to know Yasu, as:

-She had to enter the mansion to follow after Rudolf, Kyrie and Hideyoshi.
-If she entered through the parlor window, the only place that required no key or a helper on the inside, she would have discovered that Shannon's corpse was missing.
-She did not discover that as per deduced above, therefore she didn't enter there, nor did she have a key to the mansion.
-Therefore Eva had an inside helper.
-The only person unaccounted for who could do this was Yasu.

Conclusion:

Yasu and Eva were working together, however Eva didn't know about Yasu being Shannon and Yasu was also following her own objectives on her own (see the staking of Hideyoshi and the murder of George).

>Nanjo's and Jessica's Death:

Nanjo was killed in the servants' room, the blinded Jessica somehow escaped to the parlor.

[red]"By this, we can establish a perfect alibi for Eva"[/red]
[red]"There are no more than 18 people on this island"[/red]
[red]"No life forms other than humans have any connection to this game"[/red]
[red]"Kinzo is dead, Krauss is dead, Natsuhi is dead, Hideyoshi is dead, George is dead, Rudolf is dead, Kyrie is dead, Rosa is dead, Maria is dead, Genji is dead, Shannon is dead, Kanon is dead, Gohda is dead, Kumasawa is dead, Nanjo is dead"[/red]
[red]"The 15 people mentioned are dead"[/red]
[red]"Battler is alive"[/red]
[red]"Eva is alive"[/red]
[red]"Jessica is alive"[/red]
[red]"Eva was with you the whole time."[/red]
[red]"So committing a crime was impossible for her."[/red]
[red]"Of course, Battler-kun isn't the culprit."[/red]
[red]"He wasn't forging an alibi for her, and he took the possibility that she was the culprit into account, watching her actions carefully."[/red]
[red]"No chance existed for her to do anything suspicious!"[/red]
[red]"In short, at the time of the crime, only Nanjo and Jessica were in the servants' room"[/red]
[red]"Ushiromiya Jessica has not committed murder"[/red]
[red]"She was not involved with Nanjo's murder"[/red]
[red]"Her eyes were completely blocked."[/red]
[red]"It's impossible for her to carry out a murder like that"[/red]
[red]"Neither Eva nor Battler killed Nanjo, nor were they involved"[/red]
[red]"The culprit who killed Nanjo was neither Battler nor Eva nor Jessica"[/red]
[red]"Jessica's eyes were completely blocked, and murder was impossible for her"[/red] (This is in response to Battler's statement about Jessica having multiple personalities.)
[red]"No actions caused by Jessica's body had any relation to or influence on the murder of Nanjo"[/red]
[red]"This also applies to Battler and Eva"[/red]
[red]"neither Jessica nor Battler nor Eva is the culprit who killed Nanjo"[/red]
[red]"Nanjo was killed by another person"[/red]
[red]"Of course, it was with a direct method of murder, not a trap"[/red]
[red]"A weapon was readied, and he was killed with it from point-blank range in front of him!"[/red]
[red]"The culprit appeared openly before Nanjo's eyes, and as they both looked at each other's faces, the culprit killed him. The red only tells the truth"[/red]
[red]"Absolutely no factors other than humans participate in this game board"[/red] (This is in response to any factor such as animals or robots that might have been involved.)
[red]"The one who killed Nanjo was definitely a human"[/red]
[red]"A human, with their feet on the ground, held up a weapon and killed with it!"[/red]
[red]"Right before his eyes!"[/red]

-Explanation:
One word: Yasu. She shot Nanjo (from outside the room, thus fulfilling #16), then led Jessica to the parlor while acting as Kanon, so her existence simply sidesteps the entire mountain of red truths.

It's actually a little hilarious that #31 pretty much denies witches, but Battler is so caught up in the apparent logical error that he doesn't even notice it.

That explanation for Kyrie trio's deaths doesn't feel right. They wanted to question Hideyoshi, so they took him outside of the mansion? Why would Kyrie, of all people, risk so much for literally no gain?

Not only did she risk being killed by a different culprit if Eva was innocent, but she actually made it easier for Eva to murder her without any witnesses. She should be questioning Hideyoshi with as many witnesses as possible, or else take him to a corner of the guesthouse that's out of earshot for talking but not gunfire.

Before saying anything, this is by far the most outdated episode of them all (since the manga showed us that there were SO MANY things hidden in the VN, including the direct relation between EP 4 and EP7). Keep in mind that when this was made, people in the fanbase weren't completely aware of the whole meta-thing with Tohya, and how things turned out to be with the "forgery" plot point.

I feel like this will have quite a few corrections from you guys.

Here we go.

"Episode 4: Alliance of the Golden Witch" Explained - Part 1 out of 4

Oh boy, this is a weird one. This episode not only has the ridiculously long and multi-layered Ange and Maria subplots, which take up as much if not more screen time than the actual "game" without providing actual clues to the murder mysteries in question (though they do nudge the reader towards a certain mindset that helps in uncovering the overarching mystery), this is also an episode where EVERYONE aside of the cousins are in cahoots with Yasu to some degree. Add to that the fact that this was the first chapter where the Blue Truth appeared to complicate the solutions (in addition to a reduced number of case-relevant Red Truths), and you can clearly see why it took me so long to resolve myself to actually replay this episode and write this. Oh well, I might as well get started...

>Culprits:

-Yasu (Killer.)
-Krauss (Primary accomplice.)
-Kyrie (Primary accomplice.)
-Godha (Accomplice.)
-Kumasawa (Accomplice.)
-Jessica (Accomplice.)
-Everyone else beside Battler and George (Passive Accomplice)

Krauss and Kyrie play along believing that they are playing a murder mystery game aimed at Battler. The rest of the adults and the servants are the same, though less involved. The instigator is Yasu who bribes them, along the servants and everyone else, but Krauss and Kyrie are the two who work closely with her and talk to the cousins repeatedly.

On the other hand the accomplices are separated and mostly left in the dark regarding what Yasu is actually doing and probably none of them are aware of the murders until they get killed off as well.

Also, while I don't find it necessary myself, there are compelling arguments pointing at the possibility of Yasu using the threat of the bomb set up under Rokkenjima as a sort of "Insurance Policy" to make sure that at least her most important accomplices (namely Krauss and Kyrie) would stay in line.

Since this episode barely focuses on the actual murders and even the order in which people died is questionable, I will attempt to first construct an independent timeline instead of going through the usual Twilights.

>Character Death Reconstruction:

This episode was especially hard to crack because it has less Red Truths than even EP1! Yes, the episode that didn't even have the Red Truth invented yet has more of it retroactively because of the later episodes then the last episode of the first tetralogy. Go figure...

The only solid thing we know about the order of the deaths was that Kanon was the 9th, courtesy of these Red Truths.

! Red Truth !
[red]"Among the five people in Kyrie's group, he was the first to die."[/red]
[red]"In short, he was the 9th victim."[/red]

There are two ways this could be possible: Either the six First Twilighters + Jessica and George, or the six First Twilighters + Gohda and Kumasawa had to die before Kanon. In my opinion it's the latter. My reasoning is as follows:

It has to start with the six people in the dining hall, otherwise we wouldn't have our target number of 9th.

If after that she were to kill one of the cousins, it's safe to assume that she would have had to "kill" the persona relating to them. Therefore if she were to kill George for 7th, then Shannon would have been "killed" as well, which would contradict #1. However, if she were to kill Jessica first and then "kill" Kanon, then he would have been the 8th at best. I would also argue that killing off the relevant persona would happen -before- the cousin in question is killed, for obvious reasons.

Therefore the only way both Red Truths could be fulfilled if there were two separate deaths (aka. Gohda and Kumasawa) that would add up to the required 8, so that when Yasu would "kill" Kanon and Shannon in preparation of killing the two cousins they would become the 9th and the 10th.

"Episode 4: Alliance of the Golden Witch" Explained - Part 2 out of 4

>Events:

Now, for the actual timeline:

-Eva, Rudolph, Rosa, Hideyoshi, Natsuhi and Genji are killed in the dining hall. This probably happens -after- the second phone call by Kyrie requesting that Gohda and Kumasawa would be locked up. Yasu leaves under the guise of letting Kumasawa and Gohda out of the shed but instead she uses the opportunity to go to the dining hall first and kills the people there and then smashes their heads.

-After this she goes to the shed. Gohda gives her the key through the small window, believing that it is still part of the game, but when she opens the shutter she kills them both. Afterwards she props up the bodies as if they were hanged so that when she locks the shutter from the outside she could use a long rod or some other method to easily return the key to the pocket of the now standing Gohda through the window, thus creating a locked room.

-After this point she returns to Kyrie and co. to deliver the next call regarding "Kinzo's test" and then discards Kanon and Shannon, thus "killing" them (Fulfilling #1-2)

-After this she meets up with George and shoots him in the head.

-She then goes to meet with Jessica and convinces her that the entire thing was just a game (alternatively she is informed of the existence of the bomb and threatened into playing along, however I once again find the threat unnecessary). Jessica plays along, calls Battler and gives him information that she should not have, like that George was also dead or that she would die from a head wound. After the call is over Yasu shoots and then smashes her head open.

-She returns to the mansion where Krauss, Kyrie and Nanjo are non the wiser. She tells them that George and Jessica also agreed to play along and hid themselves. Kyrie then delivers the final phone call, after which Yasu kills them and moves the bodies to their final locations/sets up the crime scenes to match Kyrie's description.

-When Battler doesn't remember his "sin", Yasu sets the bomb, goes to the well next to Nanjo's corpse and uses the same trick as in EP2: She ties something heavy to the gun with a string, which is then lowered into the well. She then commits suicide and then the weight pulls the gun down into the well where it cannot be discovered. Note that the well has iron bars on it that cannot be opened at all (probably built into the concrete) just big enough for a handgun to fall through but not big enough for a person, meaning there is no way to get in or out of the well.

-Maria was poisoned and laid to rest in the time between Battler moving over to the chapel and returning with the keys. By the time he enters the mansion Yasu had long since left through the back door.

-Battler was killed by the bomb Yasu set up in advance that blew up the entire mansion, thus explaining all the final Red Truths of the episode regarding to Beatrice killing Battler.

And now the rest of the mysteries and questionable events:

>Maria's umbrella:

Maria claims that Kinzo gave her an umbrella when she was out in the rain in the rose garden.

-Explanation:
It was probably Krauss in disguise. He dressed up as Kinzo and acted like him in order to create a witness and thus throw the other siblings off-balance after the previous arguments over whether Kinzo was alive. It is quite possible that this was the moment where Yasu and Krauss first meet eye to eye (since usually this is the point where she would give Maria the letter of challenge) and where Yasu gives him her offer.

>The Family Conference:

Instead of Kinzo, it is Yasu that shows up at the conference and bribes the family and the servants to play along with her game in exchange for the gold. No one is killed at this point in time.

They all get the same basic cover story explained to them so that there would be no inconsistencies. Gohda and Kumasawa leave for the guest house to tell the cousins about the "events". It is so that they would not move to the mansion and discover the "deception".

In the meantime Krauss, Kyrie, Nanjo and Yasu leave for the chamber with the gold to prove her claim. These three are going because:

a.: Krauss is the eldest of the siblings and its his house, not to mention he is the one who first made contact with Yasu, so he is there to make sure she is telling the truth.

b.: Kyrie is there as the trusted representative of the rest of the siblings, and she is there to later talk to Battler in particular.

c.: Nanjo is there as a neutral third party to oversee the discovery of the gold and the later events.

The rest stays there to discuss what they were going to be doing with the money and whatnot.

After the confirmation of the gold (and the possible revelation of the bomb) the same group goes to a separate room to call the cousins as per Yasu instructs them.

"Episode 4: Alliance of the Golden Witch" Explained - Part 3 out of 4

>The First Phone Call:

Krauss, Kyrie, Shannon, Kanon and Nanjo are locked in a "dungeon" from where they manage to call the cousins through the internal phone.

-Explanation:
This is the scene that makes it blatantly obvious that the entire group in the nonexistent dungeon (plus the two servants in the guest house) are in cahoots with Yasu. The call is only there to force the cousins to stay in the guest house so that they wouldn't interfere with their plans, which as far as Krauss and Kyrie knew was just some eccentric but innocent murder-mystery game for Battler.

>The Second Phone Call:

"Kinzo" orders the cousins to lock Gohda and and Kumasawa up in the gardening shed.

Explanation:
The servants are separated from the cousins for several reasons. First of all, it's so that they wouldn't accidentally spill the beans. Also, by locking them in the shed, Yasu created the circumstances for another closed room murder for later. Kumasawa and Gohda don't put up any resistance against locked outside because they believe this is also part of the "game".

>"Kinzo's" test:

The cousins are told to go to certain locations one at the time. Jessica has to go to her room. Later Shannon calls George and tells him to go to the arbor in the rose garden. They are given three choices: Sacrifice themselves, sacrifice their loved one (Kanon and Shannon, respectively), or sacrifice everyone else on the island. (BTW, in my humble opinion this is one of the most badass series of scenes in the entire series :3 Sometimes I wonder why Ryukishi doesn't write battle shounen. It would be fourteen different flavors of awesome. :3)

-Explanation:
Big surprise: the entire thing was a meta-event, including the choices. In reality Yasu convinced Jessica about the "game" in order to deceive Battler. George was killed either right before or right after this. All the badass meta-events are sadly completely fictional without even a grain of truth.

>Jessica's Phone Call:

After the "test", Jessica calls Battler in the guest house and tells him that his opponents are demons and witches. She also claims that Battler's test will be the "resurrected Beatrice".

-Explanation:
Jessica, believing that this was part of the game, gives the account that Yasu (probably dressed as Kanon) gave her. Then, when the call was over, Yasu shoots her in the head and locks the door from the outside with her master key to create a simple closed room murder.

>Kyrie's Phone Call:

Kyrie, the only "survivor" who "escaped" the "dungeon" calls Battler and tells him about what "happened", including Kinzo's appearance, the demons, witches and everything else. She asks whether George and Jessica are alive and she too references the epitaph. In the end she directly tells Battler to believe in the existence of witches.

Explanation:
Once again, Yasu gives the instructions to the oblivious Kyrie who then acts them out in the phone. Once the call is over, she shoots her and then shoots four more holes to the locations where she said the "Golden Thread" was shot.

"Episode 4: Alliance of the Golden Witch" Explained - Part 4 out of 4

>The Phone Call After Battler Leaves:

Maria receives a call just after Battler leaves the room. When he returns and takes the call, Maria leaves to take her test while Battler has a conversation with Beatrice.

Explanation:
Yasu in the flesh. Duh.

>Battler Meeting Beatrice:

Battler goes to the entrance of the mansion for his "test" and there he meets Beatrice, who looks down on him from a balcony. After some verbal sparring she demands that Battler remember a sin he committed six years ago.

! Red Truths !
[red]"Six years ago for me, no person called Beatrice existed."[/red] (Used by Beatrice and repeated by Battler in Chapter 17: Cause of the Tragedy.)
[red]"The sin I am now demanding that you remember is not between Ushiromiya Battler and Beatrice."[/red]
[red]"Ushiromiya Battler has a sin"[/red]
[red]"Because of your sin, people die."[/red]
[red]"Due to your sin, a great many humans on this island die."[/red]
[red]"No one escapes, all die."[/red]

-Explanation:
The meeting really did happen, but the dialog playing out is fictional, as there are just too many references to the events in the players' realm. Beatrice asking for Battler to remember and repent for his "sin" is Yasu's last gambit for making Battler remember her and his promise from six years ago.

Aside of the Red Truths, there is one very interesting detail: when Battler demands a Red Truth regarding that Battler's presence is the trigger that caused the massacre, Beatrice refuses to provide one. This is in line with the idea that Yasu has been planning this for as while (as shown by the blown up shrine (which was the test-run for the bomb that later destroys the entire mansion) and the reparation-letters sent out in advance (which had to have extensive preparation, like putting billions of yen into the safes, creating the cards and mailing them)), and Battler's return only changed the execution, namely the convoluted mystery-novel style murders instead of just killing everyone and being done with it.

The final part of the scene is also very indicative of Yasu: The gameboard Beatrice gives up after Battler declares that he remembers no sin and Meta-Beato "takes over" for her.

>Ange at the Hill:

In 1998, Ange is confronted by Kasumi and her guards at the hilltop near Kuwadorian on Rokkenjima. In the end she "summons" the Seven Sisters to deal with them.

-Explanation:
It was established that Amakusha had a big, heavy rifle-case on the boat and that he was not with Ange at the hill. He was probably at a nearby hilltop, sniping with a high-caliber rifle at Ange's attackers, and Ange just painted over the events with her "magic" (read: imagination, delusion, mindset, self-deception... Magic is a LOT of things in this series...)

No, he actually meant Episode 4. Episode 3 is a forgery containing Tohya's memories, but also a conspirative theory that Eva could be the culprit behind the whole incident. That made Eva come to them after the publication and clarify the circunstances (which is why Eva's Diary was with Ikuko in the first place). That said, Episode 4 was made. Episode 7 is more of an interpretation of Eva's Diary made by Ikuko, but never published. Episode 8 well, was the whole thing altogether.

If he's checking over the drafts, that could mean that most of the work is done, so there's a limit to how many things he can subtlety alter, or it could mean there's a lot more to be done, in which case minor things could be added/removed after he looks at it, without him even knowing.

To really make every part of Umi solvable, he'd need to either provide them with a full, detailed script that can't be changed, or he'd have to be there for multiple stages of the process, capable of making pretty drastic changes multiple times, potentially.

Just saying that it wouldn't take much for things to get missed.

He is one of the people that actually solve the whole thing before the manga was even out (just for the sake of curiosity, in a thread he also said he gave Umineko a 9/10 instead of a perfect 10 because it was too complicated to solve and that irritated him profoundly, since he had to re-read a lot of stuff lol).

There was a site where he published them, and I was one of the people that spread it for everyone having difficulties on solving before the manga came out.

The site is now gone, but I had a back up of the content (I literally have the whole site in a folder on my PC).

I'm pretty much reposting it in here with some different structure (to fit 4chan well), but, as I explained, the info is now kinda outdated.

Ryukishi only started working with the "storyboard" for the manga during Episode 3, iirc (there was a little comment from him on the magazine about that).

Before that, he didn't really had much contact with the whole thing directly, which is why some of the chapters had some heavy plot-holes at the beginning).

You say that, but I doubt you can name one nearly as complex.

Umineko is the very definition of the kind of stuff we consider to be 2deep4u material, to the point most of the people in here could only understand it much later (with the manga pointing out what they missed explicitly).

Also, the psychological aspect reminded me of this thread from vndb some time ago, starting with this comment:

You're mistaking convolution for complexity. Umineko is one of the longest, if not the longest work ever written, and yet the furthest it gets into psychology is Yasu's apparent split personality disorder, which is not exactly an original topic.

The fact that the story is hard to completely understand despite being over 200 hours long isn't indicative of being deep, it's just indicative of bad writing. And if Ryukishi were intentionally going for 2deep4u, which I don't think he was, he should be hanged, drawn, and quartered.

Is this the Ushiromiya family secret? They have 10 tons of dirty gold? Seriously a good part of that gold is probably Holocaust gold. Or if not then looted from Russia, Greece etc and other places Italy/the Axis invaded.

If they ever revealed the gold, Israel/Greece/every Eastern Euro country would be jumping on them so fast Mossad wouldn't even have a chance.

AND WHY IS BEATRICE CALLING THE OTHER ITALIANS TRAITORS? Why is Kinzo/Willard giving a history lesson of the "Brave" Italians who never surrendered? They were Fascists. Yeah, long novels can be good, but they can be bad. You can have 843493K words, but it all be bullshit with bad consistence, bad plot, bad characterization, etc. This is not the case for Umineko, but it's not perfect like some people paint it. And the romance between Yasu and Battler, which is kinda a focus, is badly written. I have a hard time believing it was so intense when it was just some 13 years old with a crush on a jerk.

>> No.15591227

>>15591207
I think that's the point though. She never had any interactions with boys her age, so she over-romanticized how relationships work, since she probably only had novels and such to work off of. Most people would learn more about Battler and get disillusioned, or they'd make other friends and gradually forget about him. Yasu did neither, and ended up stuck in romance chuunibyo land for 6 years.

Once she'd invested 6 of the most important years of her life in it, it'd be really hard to just let it go, unless Battler shows up to either shatter her illusions or start making them real. That's why breaking his promise wouldn't have been a sin, if he'd just let Shannon know the answer.

>> No.15591236

Umineko is not perfect, nothing is perfect. But as a mystery, it hits home quite closely.

Also, romantic interactions are subjective (some call Clannad a melodramatic piece of shit, others the extreme opposite), and, in my opinion, I see no bad writing in their relationship.

Yasu is a child who has no sexual organs, no identity, personality problems and got in love with Battler when he/she actually thought it was something significant (which, at least for him, it wasn't really all that).

Not only that, she/he was born from an incest (mental problems are there for a some other reason than his/her tragic accident as a baby).

Not only that, with all of her/his identity problems, she decided to give love a chance yet again with George. By that time, after all that delusional stuff happens and also Kanon's situation (her/his secure escapism), she/he end up solving the epitaph and it's revealed that everyone she/he fell in love with so far were all her blood related parents.

You call it shit writing, and I call it genius messed up situation leading to absolute despair.

Okay started to get convinced that this is one big hallucination designed to show some later truth

Maria created Beatrice's reality, named her demons, old fisher tales gave her the hatred of spiders, Shanon gave her a love of Battler, Kinzo gave her a role as witch of the island, Battler apparently gave her the idea of blond hair and Tits

She's just a compilations of hopes, a culmination of dreams...This stopped making sense when yasu said he/she wanted to be a witch. Something happened at that point, probably.

Although on episode 6:

Isn't it over? Battler and Beatrice went to the golden land and ascended off the board. So what we are now playing with is Ange, and the pieces left over on the board itself. Which kinda means that Episode sevens Bernkastel. basically just said 'I will torture you forever'. Fun for the whole family. I guess that's why episode 8 exists, for Battler to come in and rescue them and FINALLY end the pieces suffering.

This is his favorite episode, and I'm gonna let his personal comments intact (even though there are more than in the other explanations), just like most of the others I did so far (I only cut the irrelevant ones for the sake of space in each post).

Before anything, this explanation got some things 100% accurately, and some others not so much (like the man from 19 years ago explanation, which was actually Battler). Episode 5 was fully explicitly explained in EP8 Manga after all, so, part of his text is just doomed to be kinda outdated at some points.

Since the objective is to clarify the answers, the first part will be covering the "Truth" statement from the Umineko Wikia. That will leave part of the misinterpretations evident.

Proceeding:

"Episode 5: End of the Golden Witch" Explained - Part 1 out of 5

#Umineko Wikia Section

The following describes the truth of what happened behind-the-scenes in End of the Golden Witch.

>Culprit:

Sayo Yasuda.

>Accomplices:

Battler Ushiromiya, Genji and all family adults (except Krauss and Natsuhi).

>Before the murders:

Erika Furudo arrived on the island and met Maria in the garden. Sayo couldn't deliver the witch's letter to Maria. She changed her plans, with the sole objective of getting revenge on Natsuhi. Sayo easily bribed the adults with gold and the promise of making Natsuhi confess to hiding Kinzo's death. Sayo talked with her accomplices, who pressured Battler to make the calls to Natsuhi. Sayo prepared a murder prank to fright Natsuhi, having the adults convince Jessica, George and Maria that they were playing a prank against Erika.

>The first twilight:

Battler pretended he found Rosa, Maria, George and Jessica dead. Genji also pretended to be dead. Krauss was kidnapped by Sayo and supposedly brought to the secret VIP room. After calling Natsuhi and allowing her to hear Krauss' voice, Sayo killed him. Later, the people pretending to be dead went hiding. Then Sayo somehow killed them all.

>The second twilight:

Sayo somehow lured Hideyoshi to the room where Natsuhi was hiding. Then, she killed him.

Erika, having prepared everything to corner Natsuhi, presented evidences and even read Natsuhi's diaries to everyone. Natsuhi finally admits her sin against the 'the man from 19 years ago' and asked to be forgiven. Battler seems to regret being an accomplice.

#Gabezhul Section

This particular episode is practically a complete, 100% side track as far as the purposes of my solution project are concerned. It gave the reader the idea that the ten rules of Knox apply to the mysteries and provided a lot of clues for the previous mysteries, including the big one, Yasu's identity. However it did not actually discuss any of the mysteries by themselves, nor did it have many mysteries that I can discuss on their own. On top of all that it had an ONSLAUGHT of Red Truths that were usually barely more than word-games and irrelevant and/or redundant bickering to complicate things, PLUS the Blue Truths on top of all that. Finally, as if those things weren't annoying enough, the actual mysteries in this episode are so vague that is becomes ridiculously hard to solve any of them with 100% certainty.

That said it is still probably my favorite episode in Chiru, if not in the whole series, because the ???? part is just GLORIOUS. This was the fourth time I read that particular part, and yet I still couldn't help but giggle like a schoolgirl all the way through. :3

I mean, I still involuntarily squee every single time Ronove shows up and Dream End Discharger starts playing, which is the biggest Crowning Music of Awesome in a game with one of the best soundtracks of all time with about a dozen other CMoAs... :3

But back to the topic:

>The phone calls and the man from 19 years ago:

Natsuhi receives a call from an unknown "man", claiming to be Natsuhi's "son" from 19 years ago and tells her that he is coming on the day of the conference for revenge. Later he asks Natsuhi about her favorite season. She answers fall, and then he instructs her to uncover a playing card depicting the season. Then he proceeds to blackmail her with Krauss' life, ordering her to hide in a wardrobe in a certain room the next day. Later Natsuhi notes that the only person who would know about her favorite season would be Shannon, and therefore she suggests that she might be an accomplice.

-Explanation:
It was Yasu, of course. Even though Genji says the call came from an external line, it was actually from an internal line all along. The card and her knowing Natsuhi's favorite season points at Shannon (possibly a clue for Battler), but it is quite likely that there were four cards hidden in the room, so no matter which season Natsuhi would have chosen, there would have been a corresponding card there.

As for the blackmail, it's so that she could be framed for Hideyoshi's murder, though this plan later gets complicated by other factors.

"Episode 5: End of the Golden Witch" Explained - Part 2 out of 5

>The Witch's Letter:

Battler, Rudolf, Kyrie, Eva, Hideyoshi, Shannon, Kanon, were in the dining hall when there was a knock on the door. When they check it out, there is a letter written by Beatrice with the family head's ring that declares Battler the family head.

! Red Truths !
(Ugh... This episode -really- goes overboard with the number and length of the Reds... -.-)

[red]Before the family conference, Erika, George, Jessica, Maria, Nanjo, Gohda, and Kumasawa left the mansion and moved to the guesthouse."[/red]
[red]"Of those who remain, only Krauss, Natsuhi, and Genji were in the second floor corridor, while all others were in the dining hall."[/red]
[red]"Krauss, Natsuhi and Genji did not even touch that letter!"[/red]
[red]"Not a single person in the dining hall...no, there's a simpler way to say it. Among all those inside the mansion at 24:00, not a single person placed that letter in the corridor."[/red]
[red]"Neither Krauss nor Natsuhi nor Genji knocked!"[/red]
[red]"This isn't the limited meaning of them knocking on the door, okay? It means they didn't use a pillar to transmit the sound or push the play button on a cassette tape they'd recorded or create that knock sound by any means! Of course, this applies to direct, indirect, intentional, coincidental, and unintentional means!"[/red]
[red]"Let it be known that at 24:00, except for Krauss, Natsuhi, and Genji in the second floor corridor and all of the people in the dining hall, no humans existed inside the mansion."[/red]
[red]"Let it be known that in addition to Krauss, Natsuhi, and Genji, none of those in the dining hall made the knock. In this sense, 'knock' includes all direct, indirect, intentional, unintentional, and coincidental events that could create a knocking sound."[/red]
[red]"In short, this means it was impossible for any character within the mansion to be the source of a knocking SOUND. ......And 'any character' refers even to unobserved people that no one has noticed."[/red]
[red]"It was announced in red that no one in the mansion placed the letter in the hallway."[/red]
[red]"No one in the mansion placed the letter in the hallway. This includes doing so by all concepts, such as directly, indirectly, intentionally, coincidentally, and unintentionally."[/red]
[red]"At 24:00, only Erika, George, Jessica, Maria, Nanjo, Gohda, and Kumasawa existed outside the mansion"[/red]
[red]"The letter never existed on the ceiling of the hallway."[/red]
[red]"Know that the letter never touched the serving cart."[/red]
[red]"It was impossible for anyone outside the mansion to influence anything inside the mansion around the time of the family conference."[/red]
[red]"None of the characters misidentified a knocking sound."[/red]
[red]"Misidentifying a knocking sound means this: they would not mistake a sound very similar to a knocking sound for a real knocking sound. Hitting a pillar to make something similar to a knocking sound is no good. When you record a knocking sound on a cassette tape and play it back, it becomes 'the sound of the tape with a knocking sound on it', and not a knocking sound. So that's no good either!"[/red]
[red]"In other words, all of them would correctly distinguish a knocking sound of something truly hitting the door, and they definitely wouldn't mishear it. It's totally impossible that any sounds except hitting that door directly would be misinterpreted as a knock!!"[/red]
[red]"'To knock' means someone hitting a door with their hand, right?"[/red]
[red]"And none of them misinterpreted a knocking sound. Krauss, Natsuhi, and Genji were not involved with the knock. No one else existed inside the mansion. And that knock refers to the action of standing directly in front of a door and hitting it with a hand."[/red]

-Explanation:
There was no knocking at all. It was Kanon who picked up the letter, but in reality there was no letter on the floor either. Kanon only pretended to hear a knocking sound (thus there was no fake sound or misidentification), then acted out finding the letter in the hallway (thus the letter wasn't placed by anyone anywhere), fulfilling all the Red Truths.

"Episode 5: End of the Golden Witch" Explained - Part 3 out of 5

>The First Twilight:

George, Maria, Jessica and Rosa were found dead in the cousins' room on the second floor of the guest house. Their throats were cut open and there was a lot of blood at the scene. There was a magic circle on the door. Genji was found dead in his own room with his throat cut open the same way. Genji's room was sealed and the seal was only disturbed when the body was discovered in the morning.

! Red Truths !
(Here I had to pick out a few redundant red truths because there were just so many of them. I mean, holy shit! Just including all the Red Truths would have been longer than the actual solution!)

[red]"So, anyone looking at George, Jessica, Maria, Rosa, or Genji's corpses could confirm at a glance that they are dead"[/red]
[red]"At a glance, anyone could confirm that these corpses are dead, so it is absolutely impossible that they are just people playing dead."[/red]

[red]"During the short break at 1:00 AM, the first two to leave the dining hall were Rosa and Eva. Until Eva returned, everyone in the dining hall remained there. After seeing Rosa off, Eva went to the waiting room and sealed it. Of course, she did not enter the room at all at this time."[/red]
[red]"Genji never left the mansion after 24:00"[/red]
[red]"Ushiromiya Natsuhi is not the culprit!"[/red]
[red]"Ushiromiya Krauss is not the culprit. And he was killed long ago, shortly after you heard his voice over the phone, get it?"[/red]
[red]"Due to the above, the seals are guaranteed to be PERFECT. <Miss> Erika's seals were not broken by anyone, and deception is IMPOSSIBLE!!"[/red]
[red]"Eva's seal was of the same type as <Miss> Erika's. That is because this method of sealing was one that <Miss> Erika and Eva conceived of together after DINNER."[/red]
[red]"It is impossible to tear off any of the seals by any method without leaving marks."[/red]
[red]"There were no suspicious marks on any of the seals...!"[/red]
[red]"All of Erika and Eva's seals were not tampered with in any way that hindered their ability to act as seals, such as being scraped off."[/red]
[red]"All deaths were homicides."[/red]
[red]"Know that none of the corpses would ever lead to a mistaken autopsy"[/red]
[red]"Know that no corpses exist except those of characters who have appeared in the story"[/red]

[red]"After Krauss's death, his corpse was never moved!"[/red]
[red]"Therefore, the corpses couldn't have vanished after being discovered!! Your theory about Kinzo carrying the corpses away fails!"[/red]

#Special Notes
It was mentioned a number of times how the magic circle was apparently drawn pretty sloppily and how it was an "imitation". Erika never saw the corpses, and they were hidden under blankets.

(TOO BIG, so, I will have to include the explanation in the next post, sorry)

"Episode 5: End of the Golden Witch" Explained - Part 4 out of 5

-Explanation:
The cousins, Rosa and Genji only pretended to be killed as a part of a show put up for Erika. All of the adults, the servants and Battler was playing along. It became possible because Battler was not the detective of this episode, therefore his POV is just as questionable as everyone else's. The magic circle was written up by one of the "accomplices" using Maria's notes, explaining the inaccuracies.

Since there were no corpses to identify or deaths to confirm, #1, #2 and #24 are sidestepped. #4 is explained by the time of the declaration: if a Red Truth doesn't have a time-frame attached to it, it means that it only applies to the events/facts of a particular game that happened before the Red was uttered.

Since the "trial" technically takes place on the 6th at midnight, it means that the victims could have died at any time between the discovery of the bodies and the time of the trial and the Red Truth would still be true.

They also "disprove" the possibility that the crime took place after 3:00, except that it's another technicality: there was no crime to speak of, therefore it didn't take place either before or after 3:00. The cousins and Genji died at another unspecified time (which also explains #26-30, as it is completely possible that if they were killed elsewhere, then their bodies would not be discovered and moved).

>Hideyoshi's Murder:

Hideyoshi was killed in a guest room with a stake in his back. Natsuhi was in the wardrobe during this time, but the wardrobe was closed so she didn't see anything and didn't move because of the blackmail. A few minutes later Eva calls for help because her husband didn't answer and she couldn't enter because the chain was set from the inside. Gohda cuts the chain with a wire-cutter.

-Explanation:
This is pretty much the vaguest "murder" in the entire series, since there is no Red Truth dedicated to it at all and it wasn't even discussed in the game.

This is my take on it: Hideyoshi enters the room and locks it with the chain. Then he plays out being attacked while Eva is outside. This was planned in advance, as it is shown by Gohda showing up with the wire cutter almost instantly.

Everyone rushes in to discover the "corpse", but by the time Erika with her detective privilege arrives he is already wrapped in sheets and taken to the parlor, so she cannot confirm his death.

In short, it is another fake murder played up in case Erika is within earshot.

>Why are the adults playing along with the game?

-Explanation:
It is more than likely that it was the cousins who came up with the idea of creating a murder mystery game for Erika just to spite her intellectual rapist ass. The reason why the adults are playing along is a different matter however, namely that they are doing so to put Natsuhi in a corner. Their goal is to create a situation where they can force Natsuhi to admit that Kinzo was dead all along and use this evidence to force Krauss to actually accept Battler's claim for the headship and streamline the process of dividing the gold. This would also explain why Eva put her seals everywhere beyond any human reason.

In fact it is quite likely that the reason Hideyoshi's murder was staged was because of Kinzo's "escape" from the study and, since they don't know what happened to Krauss (it is almost certain that he was taken by Yasu at this point) they plan on putting the blame on Krauss to corner Natsuhi even further, but then Erika catches Natsuhi on the way back and this diverts the discussion.

Because of this it is almost sure that Yasu wasn't working with them, since it is stated in red that Krauss was killed right after the morning phone call to Natsuhi, where his life was used to blackmail her.

"Episode 5: End of the Golden Witch" Explained - Part 5 out of 5

>The Unreliable Narrator:

This particular Episode takes the unreliability of the narration to never-before seen heights. The biggest point of confusion this caused was thanks to the scenes where Shannon and Kanon appeared to be present in the same room at the same time with Erika, the detective with the infallible objective viewpoint. How does that work? Let me quote Redsoxit from down below (user in the vdnb thread where this was first published), as he put it quite eloquently:

________________________

[...] Even if the "Narrative" states that both Shannon and Kanon existed at the same time and in the same room as Erika, we are never explicitly shown Erika's OWN perspective and point of view throughout the episode. Remember that the only thing established regarding the role of the Detective is that the Detective is not the culprit and that the Detective's OWN point of view is completely and unmistakably objective. So unless, Erika HERSELF unequivocally states in red that she saw both Kanon and Shannon at the same time in the same room, we still have plenty of room to doubt the perspective of the "Narrative" (as written by Hachijo and read aloud by the witches) that allowed Kanon and Shannon to exist at the same time and room as Erika. For example, the "Narrative" shows us (the readers) corpses on the beds in the cousins' room and attempts to convince us that the corpses are dead only because Erika never bothers to check that the corpses are fake. If we were shown Erika's 1st person point-of-view, we would have seen something resembling the adults "crying" over their children's deaths while completely covering Erika's view of the bodies and we (as readers) would have been much more EASILY able to doubt the validity of the corpses.
________________________

In other words, not a single scene we are presented with can be considered objective, and as such even scenes featuring Erika should be treated the same way as the magic-laden meta-events of the rest of the series.

"Episode 6: Dawn of the Golden Witch" Explained - Part 1 out of 5

Oh my god... This episode... It felt like it was a thousand goddamn hours long... X_X

First off, holy shit, the beginning of this game is still as whiplash-inducingly out of the left field as ever... -.-'

It is a horrible way to start off the episode, and wost of all, it completely contradicts later details of the story, where it turns out the entire "logic error" thing was just a giant Batman Gambit by Battler to get Beato back, a genius twist that is severely undermined by all the pointless and stupid "locked in a room and freaked out" scenes that belong in a Saw/Hostel style torture-porn flick... and then to top it all off it immediately jumped over to Ange and Ikuko, who are insufferable in her first scenes. A pretty damn bad start all around...

As for the Episode overall, like the other Core Episodes it has very little actual murder mystery to it and much, much more heavy on allegories, symbolism and subtle (or not so subtle) clues about the grand mystery of Yasu, so I will be spending a lot of time unraveling those this time around.

This one also dedicated a ridiculous amount of time explaining things like what magic, witch, miracle and a lot of other things meant in the setting, leading to a really slow and ponderous episode that sometimes really felt like a chore to read, something that really wasn't helped by the Ikuko/Featherine + Ange duo's oftentimes insufferable musings.

I get it Ryukishi. You are fed up with your fanbase refusing to think on their own and being obsessed with the Red Truth. I get it. Did it really need a dozen scenes to explain this? A little author's note would have worked just as well, you know? -.-'

>Culprits:

-Erika: She is the only killer in the story, probably because it only got as far as the First Twilight
-Everyone else is participating in the detective game designed to fool Erika, there are no actual crime plans even on Yasu's part as far as we can see

>Battler and the Reborn Beatrice:

Beato is reborn, however she lacks her old personality and calls Battler "Father", which depresses and enrages him to no end.

-Explanation:
The entire situation mirrors the Kinzo/Beatrice II relationship, with Battler taking Kinzo's place. In fact it might go even further, as it is quite conspicuous how it's Genji and Kumasawa who are around the two instead is Ronove and Virgilia, meaning it is possible that at least some of the scenes are -direct- reflections of what happened with Kinzo/Beatrice II in the past. To elaborate:

(1) Kinzo/Battler loses their version of Beatrice at their highest point (upon childbirth in Kinzo's case and upon discovering the Truth in Battler's case)
(2) They both get a replacement who looks exactly like their dead Beato but acts nothing like her (Beatrice II and Chick-Beato, respectively)
(3) They both try to create an environment where their lost love would "return" (Grooming Beatrice II by Kinzo in Kuwadorian and recreating Beato's game to make her manifest by Battler)
(4) Both of them are refusing the new Beato's familial affections and want her romantic affections instead
(5) Both of them shut themselves away (literally or metaphysically) and gamble on a miracle to grant their wish

The one big difference, however, is that Battler (thankfully) doesn't up and rape her, instead Beatrice goes on a vision quest kind of thing in order to become the Beato Battler desires.

#Further Details
An interesting note: Right after Beato "disappears" upon the completion of the duel between Shannon and Kanon, there is a flashback scene with a young Battler and an unseen person telling Beatrice to embody all the things Battler liked in women. This could be interpreted, and was probably intended, as a flashback to when Beatrice was born, when Yasu created the persona and pushed all the emotions related to Battler upon her.

>"Why Are Furniture Not Allowed To Love?"

Shannon and Kanon both express their love to their partner (George and Jessica, respectively) but declare that one and only one of them can achieve happiness.

Upon witnessing these exchanges, Ange and Featherine deconstructs why the need for magic and their furniture status makes no sense in face of the presented facts.

-Explanation:
Well then, some facts have to be unpresented, right?

Since Shannon and Kanon are both personae of Yasu, something they address as being "furniture" and "not having a complete soul", it only stands to reason that if one of them enters into a romantic relationship with one of the cousins, the other cannot, since they inhabit the same body.

This duality, and the fact that Yasu's body have been disfigured by the childhood accident and leaves her gender questionable poses the "unknown barrier" Ange theorizes.

"Episode 6: Dawn of the Golden Witch" Explained - Part 2 out of 5

>The Magical Brooch's Miracle:

In a meta-event, George, Jessica, Shannon, Kanon and eventually Beato enter into a fight for a single miracle that would allow them to fulfill their love through the reforged magical brooch introduced in EP3.

-Explanation:
It all comes down to Yasu again. Shocking, I know.

This entire setup is an extremely blatant clue towards Yasu's identities, though I have to admit I didn't get it at all when I first read the VN years ago and I was actually quite bewildered because the entire situation made no sense whatsoever. The core conflict of "If Shannon gets George, Kanon leaves for some arbitrary reason, and if Kanon gets Jessica, Shannon stays for some arbitrary reason, and then there is even Beato in this picture somehow" makes absolutely no sense as it is presented through the meta-events, and the best the in-meta-universe justification they get are the ridiculous amount of "furniture-talk". Thankfully Beato later dissects the insanity of the presented situation as well, and the lines pertaining to how the duel would only make sense if only three people were involved in a love triangle gives possibly the biggest clue in the entire series thus far.

However, it all makes sense once we consider that Shannon, Kanon and this episode's Chick-Beato are all just facets of the same human being. Therefore if one wins this "duel" and enters into a proper romantic relationship with one of the cousins, it would mean that Yasu would have to either discard the other personae or at least reveal them to the "winner". Either way, the romantic affections of the two losers would be ultimately rejected, and even the "winner" is questionable, as that relationship has to deal with Yasu's mental and physical issues, hence the need for "magic" and a "miracle".

So yeah, Ryukishi once again condensed a ridiculous amount of clues and symbolism into a neat package and then proceeded to make it obscure enough that one literally needs a sudden revelation to make heads and tails of it. Shocking, I know.

"Episode 6: Dawn of the Golden Witch" Explained - Part 3 out of 5

>First Twilight:

Rosa's and Maria's bodies were found in the parlor of the mansion, with the door barred from the inside by a wooden hat stand. Natsuhi's body was found in her own room, Kyrie's in Krauss' study, Eva's in the VIP room and Battler's in one of the guest rooms.

Later the "survivors", following Erika's advice, hole up in the guest house, dividing themselves into two rooms designated as "the cousins' room" and "the next room over". Erika, Hideyoshi, George, Shannon, Kumasawa, and Nanjo are in the next room over while the rest are in the cousins' room.

After some time Erika leaves the 'next room over' and seals the doors of both rooms as well as the windows from the outside. She also finds a letter which declares that Battler's body was hidden. She then goes around and decapitates all the "victims" except for Battler, whose room she sealed down "retroactively", meaning the seals took effect from the time the room was locked up after the discovery of the body. Upon returning she undoes the undisturbed seal and discovers that Battler's body was indeed missing, so she locks the door from the inside with the repaired door-chain and searches the room. Upon entering the bathroom she gets sprayed with burning hot water by a wired-up faucet which takes her considerable amount of time to turn off.

! Red Truths !
No. I am not going to do it. Since this was the one and only closed room in the entire episode, it means that almost all the Red Truths are dedicated to this one. All SIXTY-ONE of them! There is no way in hell I am going to copy all that here, so I will point you at <a href="http://umineko.wikia.com/wiki/Red_Truth" target="_blank">the UmiWiki's Red Truth page instead</a> and will only cherry-pick the ones that are absolutely needed for the explanation. You can find the rest over there.

[Request: 'Hideyoshi, George, Shannon, Kumasawa, and Nanjo are in the next room over!'] [red]"Acknowledged."[/red]
[It has already been shown that Kinzo no longer exists, so please remove him from the word 'everyone'.] [red]"I acknowledge that everyone else is in the cousins' room."[/red]
[red]"At the time the next room over was sealed, Hideyoshi, George, Kumasawa, Shannon, and Nanjo were in it. And, the number of people in the next room over was five. No one existed there except for those to whom those five names referred! All people can only use their own names!!"[/red]
[red]"It has already been said in red that all people can only use their own names. Therefore, the names Erika, Battler, and Kanon can only be used by those people."[/red]
[red]"Please, allow me to speak. Know that neither is broken. (This and two truths below were said while referring to the seals on the cousins' room and the next room over doors)."[/red]
[red]"Know that an unbroken seal proves that there are still none who have entered or exited."[/red]
[red]"IMPOSSIBLE. The seals on the windows were also INTACT. Of course, this is at the time of the logic ERROR."[/red] (This refers to the cousins' room windows.)
[red]"The one who rescued Battler was, without a doubt, Kanon. The cousins' room is guaranteed to be a perfect closed room until the end. It is true that the next room over was sealed, but at the time of the logic error, only the doors were checked to see whether the seals were preserved. At the time Battler was rescued, only Kanon entered the guest room."[/red]
[red]"The guest room was sealed at the time that Battler's 'corpse' was examined, so until I came again and broke the seals, it was absolutely impossible for anyone to go in or out. Therefore, when I entered the room, it is certain that Battler was hiding somewhere inside the guest room."[/red]
[red]"The only chance Battler had to escape was after I broke the seals. To be even more specific, he had no chance to escape except for the time I was in the bathroom."[/red]
[red]"Kanon does not exist in the bedroom."[/red]
[red]"Kanon does not exist in the guest room. .........Of course, this includes all parts of the closet, the bedroom, and the bathroom."[/red]

(Once again, the explanation will be handle in the next post... why so much red!)

"Episode 6: Dawn of the Golden Witch" Explained - Part 4 out of 5

-Explanation:
Okay, first off we need to be clear on a number of factors for this to make any kind of sense: Yasu=Shannon=Kanon. You literally cannot solve this locked room without grasping that
Next are the name games. There are two threads there with two bunch of red truths.

(1) The first one is about the people in the guest house rooms. The relevant Red Truths are #1 and especially #2. The word "everyone" is presented in the meta-events as a loaded word because it appears to severely limit the moves on the witch's side, but in reality it is quite the opposite. By not declaring the presence of each person by name, Battler avoids revealing that Shannon and Kanon are not at two different locations at the same time. By saying "everyone" he presents a technical truth, since Kanon was not the acting persona at the time therefore he could leave him out of the "everyone else" group. To put it from another perspective: if Battler conveniently switched his definition of "everyone" to "human bodies" instead of "persons we know" before he spoke, this simple wordplay sidestepped the entire issue.

(2) The second one is about the "people can only use their own name" conundrum that appeared to throw quite a few people off the right track. The relevant Red Truths are #3 and #4, and they state that no one can use names that do not belong to them and no one can use the name of another person when being identified by the Red Truth. This would, on the surface, mean that Shannon cannot be the same person as Kanon. However, if you look closely, there is a very important Red Truth missing: There is no Red Truth declaring that "one human cannot have more than one name that actually belongs to them"! The reason why Yasu can use multiple names is because all those names actually belong to her and are acknowledged by others. Now, let's get to the main course: the mystery of the disappearing Kanon!

Let me give you the solution Beatrice provided to the closed room in a nutshell: Erika enters the room and locks it with the chain. She enters the bathroom and has to mess around with the faucet, allowing Battler to get out of his hiding place in the closet, open the door and let Kanon in, who in turn "magically" got out of the guest house despite the seals Erika placed on the doors. Then he leaves while Kanon locks the door from the inside with the chain and hides in the closet in Battler's place while Erika is still busy with the faucet, then magically disappears from the room.

Let's take the elements of this mystery one by one. First off, the problem of how Kanon got out of the sealed cousin's room. As the relevant Reds of #5, #6 and #7 show, the seals on the doors of the guest house rooms were unbroken. However, there are two very big flaws in the seals: First off, most of the arguments focus on the cousin's room's seals, as that is where Kanon was supposed to be at the time. However, in reality "Kanon" was actually in the 'next room over' as Shannon, so that entire line of reasoning is pointless, since while we get some Red Truth regarding the cousin's room windows, there is none regarding the next room over's windows. More importantly, even if they were sealed properly and the seals were undisturbed (which is, again, not stated in red), they actually don't prove anything because of a simple reason: Shannon could have easily left through the window right after Erika left the room, before she even had the chance to get outside and set up the seal on the windows.

In short I propose this: Shannon got out through the window right after Erika left and ran over to the mansion where she changed into Kanon. During this time Erika set up the seals and killed the victims of the First Twilight who were playing dead, then she went over to Battler's room while being followed by Yasu/Kanon, after which point things happened as described by Beato... well, to a degree.

So, the disappearance of Kanon. The relevant Reds are #8-12.

What happened was practically the same as Beato's explanation up until Kanon's disappearance. I admit, before I finally wrapped my head around the whole Yasu thing this mystery kicked my ass as I had literally zero idea about how it could be solved. In fact I am actually tempted to look up that godawful Rosatrice video just to see what kind of insane mental gymnastics the guy had to perform in order to make sense of this any other way than the very simple "Yasu hid herself in the closet and then stopped being Kanon, therefore fulfilling #11 and #12."

#Added Detail
I would once again quote Ange's musings about multiple personalities, since it is very relevant to the whole Yasu issue.

"If a personality is what makes a person a person in our eyes...You could probably say that a second personality represents a different person entirely, even if it inhabits the same flesh body."

"Episode 6: Dawn of the Golden Witch" Explained - Part 5 out of 5

>Erika's Red introduction:

After her defeat, Erika staggers towards Beato and Battler and delivers her introduction in Red one last time for a dramatic exit.

! Red Truths !
[red]"Hi, pleased to meet you! I am Furudo Erika, the detective!! I may be an uninvited guest, but please, welcome me!!"[/red]
[red]"I am the visitor, the 18th human on Rokkenjima!!"[/red]
[......Sorry, but...] [red]"Even if you do join us-"[/red]
[red]"There are 17 people."[/red]

-Explanation:
Okay, simple math time. Early on one of the biggest Red arguments in the story was about how there is no Mysterious Person X or 19th person on the island, limiting the number of people on Rokkenjima to 18.

Then it was revealed that Kinzo was dead all along, which lowered the number of humans on the island to 17.

Then we got Erika entering the game as the "uninvited guest", bumping up the number of people to 18.

And finally, in this declaration, we get the following: -EVEN- if Erika joins them like she declared (setting up a hypothetical scenario), there would still -ONLY- be 17 people on the island. If we turn it around, it means that if Erika -DOES NOT- joint them, like in the first four games, then there are -ONLY- 16 people on the island.

Since we have 17 named characters, this means that one person plays two roles, and as we all know, this person is Yasu/Kanon/Shannon.

The PS3 sprites turn some of the expressions for a few characters generic, and thus along with some of the cgs detract from the atmosphere of certain scenes. The voices are great, though you could also say that the quietness really made the creepy atmosphere of certain scenes. I have no comment on the more technical aspects you asked about, but felt the need to give my two cents on this.

It is, but I did notice something pretty interesting.

The Steam version of Umineko has the Star Trek dialog in System0 removed. The song is identical, it just doesn't have the Borg Queen quote at the start. I guess it was legally dubious since Umineko was never formally released in the West before now?

Just finished reading Umineko's manga, and damn, as an adaptation for an "almost none fanservice allowed" kind of visual novel, this sure has a bunch.

Especially in those omake pages (so many incest jokes it actually made me laugh just for thinking that one of the main points in the story is pretty much that). Battler and Ange have too much of this though, kinda ruined EP 6 a bit, for me (because of those initial pages with each character narrating a new "So far, in Umineko EP6..." and such).

And I'm talking about THAT kind of "oniichan, fuck me!!". Priceless quotes like Ange trying to say in red that they are not blood related when Battler refuses to have an apparent "promised" intercourse with her.

Well, fuck, I'll just stick with the VN from now on.

He knows a lot about medicine and history, judging from Higurashi at least.
You can imagine his past as a mix of George and K1. George needed to learn how to study and its purpose, rather than just studying for the sake of it, and K1 pushed himself to study just for good grades until it broke him.

Some anon was a med undergrad or something mentioned how before Higurashi came out, the topic of parasites manipulating the brain was never well talked about in the scientific world, and almost right after Higurashi came out, it became a talking about of interest. The theory being that Ryukishi read a lot of medicine paper and was ahead of the curve in terms of scientific advancement.
I don't know if it's true but it's cool. I do think that Ryukishi somewhat follows his rule of putting a lot of work to make something good. It's just really weird when I read an interview and he talks about how during the writing of Higurashi ep 6, he spent so much time playing a ninja game that it influenced him a lot and was only thinking about that ninja game while writing.
Or how he saw Independence Day and kept wanting K1 to fight aliens or something. Like, what the fuck Ryukishi?

Also, Ryukishi is apparently a very big FPS gamer for some reason, as well as a PC gamer, which is really rare in Japan.
There's a part in RGD where a character talks about how video game villains are culturally influenced by history, basically the same way FPS are influenced by making Muslims or Russians the main bad guys all the time, because they're Merrica's historical enemies.

There's a vndb user who has a degree in psychology and analysed a lot of stuff about what could have R07 have studied before writing Umineko. Seems a pretty legit text, and the discussion apparently ends to his favor about this whole thing. I'm a no go in psychology, so I really didn't get half of what were they saying, but I posted this above already:

I'm not entirely interested in the psychology aspect of Umineko since it's filled with truth and half truths, so giving an psychoanalysis of any character in Umineko seems like a wasted effort.
Though I will give it a look some time.

Here's an interesting bit of psychological information that blew my mind on Higurashi. Satoko is an interesting case psychologically as she keeps switching fathers and never grows attached to any. You can attribute her attitude to not having a solid father figure which makes her somewhat unwomanly in parts but not entirely tomboy-ish like Mion. The part that interests me the most are her breasts. Whenever you look at Satoko, you find it weird how she developed pretty large breasts for her age, and you would typically just attribute it to oppai loli archetype and nothing more. However, an interesting point is that girls who lose their father figure a very young age tend to enter puberty very early. This is due to a survival mechanism of patriarchal time when the father figure would die, the girl would have no protection or worth, so being able to enter puberty as a very young age would make her valuable. It makes their transition from childhood to adulthood in a speedy process to ensure the girl's survival and potential of being with another mate.

Hence, the reason Satoko has larger breast than most girls her age isn't just because 'lol she's a loli with breasts!' but because she switched fathers a lot and was unable to connect emotionally to any of them.

The fact that you can explain narratively Satoko's breasts in the story without it being mentioned is mind boggling to me.

Another point of psychological interest, specifically Jung, is when children and autistic people are unable to think correctly, they make up words or repeat themselves. I forgot the actual reasoning behind it but it helps remembering and clearing your thoughts.
You can attribute that viewpoint to Maria as well as Rena to a certain degree.

There is a lot of psychological insight into his work.

>> No.15597076

Interesting, I never thought about that before.

Ryukishi definitely likes this Jung guy (I only know about the Persona and Shadow part, but pretty ignorantly so, since I played the whole Megami Tensei series so far).

>>15597076
The whole Persona and Shadow is essentially what George talks about in ep 1 in an attempt to explain Maria's weird behavior, that people have their own hidden selves (shadow) that they don't show to anyone and that people behave and act differently depending on the environment. Do you talk the same way on 4chan the same way you talk at home? Do you talk at home the same way you do with friends? Or with a date?

A common understanding of this is what is known as 'having masks'. Like the old saying, give a person a mask and he'll show you his true face. I'm sure everyone's heard of that.

I'm reading this vndb posts but they're rather boring since he tries to explain DiD (multiple personality disorder) and confusing it with different personality. I would argue that Yasu whole problem is neither.
DiD develops mostly from severe abuse during childhood, where it's used as a defense mechanism to evade the abuse. I've read reports that children feel as though their consciousness floats away and they don't feel any pain. From there, different personalities take over different emotional state and form their own personalities for different tasks. This is how people can have a large number of different personalities. However, the main persona tends to remain consistently a child who never grows up and never shows itself. This is rather consistent among people with DiD.
This isn't what Yasu suffers from overall in Umineko. I don't even think there's a right medical explanation.

And Jung's view of different persona is more on situational and personal guilt. While it fits Yasu's struggle, it wouldn't make her see imaginary friends. Jung's view on DiD was limited in his time and mixed his own theory to explain DiD and doesn't mesh well with research and interviews over the years.

Arghh, now the arguments in the vndb posts are getting boringly petty. Not worth reading unfortunately and no interesting information to be gained.

If his hatred for the family increased instead of cooling down for those 6 years he'd have a motive, not even to mention the coincidence that his mother's parents died and he suddenly decided to rejoin the ushiromiyas around that time, I mean even people like George and Jessica were talking the year before he comes back about how they think battler wont be returning to the family anymore.

So can we talk about the ending? not going to bother with spoilers after this one

Either Ange becomes the witch of Truth or the Witch of Resurrection. So I guess magic 100 exists? I feel like the way magic has ended in Umineko is a mistake. It is constantly used for torture and cruelty for no reason, the only exception being the Resurrection at the very end. Even Battler was full fucking witch at the end, delighting and sharing in a puzzle in which he and his family brutally murder everyone. I feel like the human element got lost in that.

If you take the endings at face value. It's possible to just construct a non-magical ending with what we have, although its pretty fucking depressing and probably not what the author intended.

Essentially. 5-8 really overplayed the 'Magic is love' and downplayed the events of 1-4. Everyone forgave each other, at least in Battlers mind, but really if magic is real then magic is cruel. More cruel then if there is no magic.

>making this shit up

>>15600887
I interpreted it as 'A solvable mystery occurred on Rokkijima. This was reveled to Ange. Even after she retained hope they her brother would come back, which he did. Then using the power of the Witch of Resurrection, she resurrected the Ushiromiya family at least in some "dimension"'. So it's a non-magic mystery which turns into fantasy after. Which I have reservations about.

Magic is not love, love is magic.

Love is an illusion, a misunderstanding.
Mutual love is a mutual misunderstanding of being mutually loved.
And engagement is a vow to not wake up for your whole life from that misunderstanding.

The illusion of love perpetuates itself and is what creates magic. Believing in illusions is helpful but forcing others to believe in illusions is simply cruel.

Not quite.
I'm not him, but the main point, as the anon right below yours also mentioned, is that magic works as an easier solution to your problems. Sure, having hope over something changing holds no proof that it will indeed change anything, or rather the possibilities of it changing compared to those of when you'd try to actually do something to change it are far less. That's why they're considered "miracles" that people hope and wish upon. Meaning she bet on that small possibility instead of doing something, in a similar way you go to a slot machine, start mashing that bar like harambe, put on the Kaiji SFX and expect the cash to rain in.

Miracles exist to bait and deceive. And it gives power to those who manipulate truth to create suffering- every witch ever. Boring and not direct enough. I love the title 'Intellectual Rapist'. It perfectly describes Erika and is very direct. I always imagine someone just forcefully fucking your mind or eyefucking you while asking you if you finally understand the truth. It's such a great name.

>>15602591
>I can only assume that they've never read Higurashi in the first place
More like they only read it with the PS2 patch.
One of them kept bitching that Ryukishi was wrong and the artist might not know what's best for his own vision and art.
>your artistic vision is wrong! We must change it for the collective good of all
Fucking marxist.

I personally think it's fine since it's not used as a 'look, Satoko is naked, time to fap!' but as a direct shock of showing her naked for half a second, showing her run away naked rather than the narration showing her naked.
It also plays with a common theme that Ryukishi likes to play with that what defines humans are clothes, and when you remove our clothes, we become animals.
This works in a kinky lewd way, that it's more lewd if a girl is wearing clothes while naked (and when people are naked in bed, they're beasts in bed, hue hue)) but removing the last piece of cloth to run away shows Satoko thew away her humanity just to stay safe.

But of course, without love it cannot be seen, so tumblr doesn't understand.

Not to say that their view is completely vapid either. It is true that the Satoko sprite is arguably overly sexualized, with large hips and showing her vagina bones, but the original sprite had the same proportions, so there's nothing to argue about. I think it's because the original sprite is not 'pretty' that it's given a free pass.

It makes me sad that you interpreted like that anon. Her mother did love her, it was just stress outbursts that Rosa had because she's human, Maria though, is also human, so she chose to use magic and keep herself happy, so she could tank Rosa's outbursts and try to let her mama live a good life. This way both of them would be happy and wouldnt need to part.
Maria herself told you, if saw from outside, anyone would think they have problems, but to her this wasnt as bad, even Ange noted this, that she couldnt understand why Maria would say she was having a good life and a happy time.

Cynicism is scornful, even if it ends up usually right, but optimism is always the correct answer.

>she couldnt understand why Maria would say she was having a good life and a happy time.
What a joke. This is why magic is shit. Self-delusional and ignorance of the current situation. Maria's life was hardly happy or good. She ate alone, had no friends, begged random people for food at times and had to create her own friends to pretend to be happy. Had she accepted the truth, she might have found a compromise with her abusive mother or changed rather than remain blissful of her autism.
Rather than hope for a better future, she should have tried to better herself and make things better. Instead, she did nothing and relied on magic to help her out.
Maria's happiness stop her from achieving true happiness and create a better situation. Maria is an idiot who only half accepted her situation by refusing to do anything in attempt to help her mother.

Did she study?
Did she try to be less autistic?
Did she stop to act like a child?
Did she stop going around like a child, making Rosa seem like a bad mother which made her more angry?

As Kinzo said, Maria is obscene to the eyes. A waste of the Ushiromiya family name. Even more than Jessica.
