So one thing I've been noticing for a little while now is that there's a lot of discrepancy between the top five ranking and popularity ranking these days. They used to be mostly 1:1 with each other, but these days they're quite divergent. I had assumed before this was due to mangagamer perhaps filtering bundle titles out of the top 5, but I'm not so sure anymore. For example, while one can see Fata Morgana in the top 5 this week, it's 12th on the popularity list. I can only assume there's been some changes. Mangagamer themselves seem to indicate the top 5 ranking is the more reliable of the two, so I'll stick to following that, but it does carry some other repercussions with regard to having any idea what's going on in times of bundles.

Getting an idea how well a title is/isn't selling on mangagamer's site during it's launch period(where it'll get most of it's sales). You use the order numbers to figure out how out how many orders total happened during a given period and then reference the top 5 of the time to see what made up the majority of the sales for that period.

People are overreacting, MG isn't doing as badly as everyone thinks. While Tokyo Babel did sell badly Fata morgana is doing decently and OZMAFIA!! was a hit. Also Higurashi, Umineko and My Boss' Wife will do well so they are safe for now.

It's dead on steam and has only managed to hit number 2 on mangagamer's site. The only reason it's not a failure is because it's doujin title and they only had to sell like 600 copies to break even.

>MG isn't doing as badly as everyone thinks

Literally no one's saying that seriously. Mangagamer's basically making more money these days than they did their entire first fives years of operation.

No one thinks MangaGamer is doing badly though? Considering how they've been doing in the past, they are still in the red.

It's just that story-titles are not viable for the current market, something that they knew for a long while and were probably prepared for it.

Hell, considering KnS2 got to hardcopy status, they either did a lot better than expected there, or are in so much in the red, that they can order a hardcopy run for something that didn't do as well.

So considering all that i would say that it is doing decently.

>> No.15272572

>>15272544
>daily Steam players (you can check in Steam DB )

I did. Its peak concurrent users is 33, which is literally less than tokyo babel.

>Its in the top sellers on MG site

That only works if it can keep that spot for a few weeks. If we take a look at this week, for example, we can see that there's been about 700 orders last week. Obviously the lion's share of that went to haruka. Even if we're super generous and give fata morgana 30% of that, that's only 210 copies.

Between steam and mangagamer combined it might have sold enough to not have lost money by now, and that's the optimistic take. A bit early to be saying it's doing "decently", I think.

>> No.15272598

>>15272572
With daily Steam players I dont mean peak concurrent users. I mean how many are playing it right now, how many will be playing it in a few hours, how many was it yesterday and how many will be playing it tomorrow.

>> No.15272602

>>15272598

Peak concurrent users is the most people that were every playing it at the same time, anonymous. It's exactly what you're talking about. The fact that Tokyo Babel achieved a higher concurrent users means that during it's release(you know, when games have the most people playing them), it had more people playing it than fata morgana does at this time.

>> No.15272627

Finally some movement on Koiken otome.

>> No.15272630

>>15272602
I dont think that peak concurrent users is really valid for something like Fata morgana. Fata morgana didn't sell much on release, but instead is slowly gaining sells as people talk about it. So rather then looking at how many players are there at the same time it would be more meaningful to look at how many are playing it over then next week. Ofc I could be wrong since there is never a 100% guarantee to know accurately for people outside MG if they don't tell us, but with the research I did I think they will break even and at last make a bit money of it.

They updated the sort again, seems to update on a daily or semi-daily basis. Princess Evangile still on top though. Unless there is some sort of ranking available only to members it probably is sales based. Especially because at the moment, every title with the disclaimer that a game has no nudity is behind every title without that disclaimer.

Kind of have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand I'm hopeful that it means a bunch more people are buying Princess Evangile, but on the other hand, it's fucking Nutaku.

At best, if they get rejected for certain titles (maybe Mikan), they can hope that the Nutaku's customers will just buy directly from MangaGamer instead.

I'm walking a thin line trying to vote with my wallet. But it is really hard.

First problem is of course nutakus greedy store system. No free choice on gold amount, so it is designed to make you overpay for everything. Now they happened to have an "offer" of 500 gold extra so I could get my 7 dollars worth of gold for 5 dollars and have some extra left. But this is probably last time I buy anything there until they change that fraud system from F2P overpay to normal.

The second problem is that I doubt Dovac has the brains to understand that the sale was because of the discount even though nutaku sucks. Instead he'll probably see it as a sale thanks to nutaku reaching more customers.

Oh well, at least JAST and MG runs discounts so their titles will keep selling. Dovac will probably kill Denpasoft within a year with no discounts.

I noticed this as well. Though I personally don't mind in this case, MangaGamer should be careful with this as it's blatantly illegal, particularly when sending to people that have explicitly unsubscribed. The lack of unsubscribe button is also not doing them any favors.

Not him, but I also got the e-mail despite having unsubscribed in 2014. I double-checked by logging in to my account on the MG site, but my account settings say I'm not subscribed to the mailing list. They probably sent it to all recent customers, regardless of whether or not they are subscribed.

(Regarding my decision to unsubscribe, this is an example of MG failing at marketing. I have never bought a single nukige from their site, yet they kept sending me e-mails advertising products I was not interested in, often multiple mails per product. In addition to it being annoying to receive so many useless e-mails, it was awkward to have lots of mails in my inbox with stuff like 'Bukakke Ranch' and 'Hypno-Training My Mother and Sister' when people might see that when looking at my screen. With the e-mails themselves lacking an unsubscribe link, I unsubscribed by sending an e-mail. Had they had a mailing list for only non-nukige announcements, I would've still been subscribed.)

The qualities of Romeo's plots and characterizations, you can discuss, for example in the two LNs characters aren't all tha special. Way above typical LNs, but in the end just neat and functional.

But I mainly meant as far as the text itself goes. The flow, if you will. I'm not sure if you can do this, and if you'd be able to tell, but really the best way to realize how well Romeo writes is comparing him directly to others. If you only read "translated" Cross Channel and parrot opinions about Kouya (which all agree the text is amazing, parrot that too), you should shush.

WEE 01 - released as is, was so bad that even steam users complained about bad English
GnK - mostly as is, was censored in some places so its actually inferior to fan patch.

Should be my last post on the subject as it's unlikely that any more useful information can be found from it in the short term, but in the end it looks like Nutaku updates their rank sort for visual novels once daily, and it is almost surely sales based. That said, how long the remembered sales period is, if it's based on revenue or raw numbers, and how many titles they are actually selling is anyone's guess. For now Princess Evangile remains at the top, while the titles with a "no nudity" disclaimer and Deardrops make up the bottom. It's unlikely we will be able to guess if the sales are meaningful until either someone involved comments on it, or inferring its success or failure based on more titles showing up or the lack thereof.

>Root Double - as is.

I kinda doubt that. I played Never7 by the fan-tl team and that was alright. Root Double has awful awful editing that gives a lot of scenes a completely different feeling. Something bad happened here. Could obviously be that the actual fan-tl team changed, but it could also be that someone "from Sekai" edited this. No idea. I don't care. It was horrible though. The localization attempts were as well. (no, you can NOT translate "san" as "Mr." or "Mrs." all the time. That's not how the language fucking works! If you localize something to be more close to what people in the west know, do NOT let school kids refer to each other as Mr. whateverfuckingnameyouhave. Also Mr. First-Name also happens.. I mean wtf? WTF?)

That said, Sekai sucks, more news at 11. Even if they have a product or two which are good, they also published a lot of shit. Like Sound of Drop, where the TITLE should already give you an idea how bad the translation is. They didn't care. They published it. Literal as hell translation that, as a result, has no natural english at all.. and plenty of errors where wrong words are used for the given situation. Also nice literally translated idioms!

In my country people are arrested for infringing on software distribution rights all the time (for Microsoft, Adobe and AutoCAD shit), as long as they can claim damages are above certain value, and they calculate damages via simple number_of_copies_pirated x price_per_copy, so 8000 Yen game x 30000 downloads easily crosses threshold for "caused grave damages" clause for extra penalty.

Yes, this also happens in the US for companies that pirate commercial software. The BSA actually offers bounties up to $1 million for people who report their company's use of pirated software and they can conduct audits and collect fines.

It's really a different matter to do this for small-time personal use stuff. Otherwise consumer piracy would be non-existent.

>> No.15282940

As I said, its different in US since companies themselves need to to shit and pay for court.
Here it works in a much simpler fashion: police looks for individuals installing pirated software for fee, individuals selling pirated software and organizations who use pirates software, police launches raids, pays for expertise and then contacts local representative of IP owner so he will sign needed legalese - IP owner has to confirm that it was indeed his software that police found and that he suffered certain amount of damages because of perpetrator's actions.
IP owner representative them may be summoned in court few times to be questioned, but generally he's not involved at all.
Procedure is same if you file criminal complaint that your IP was infringed, as long as you can present some evidence that there were enough damages.

Of course it won't, I'm more concerned about people being turned away from the series because of the title, Boob wars for example sounds ridiculous enough in order to grab people attention while Funbag Fantasy does not it just sounds awful. It's a rather good series that I want other people to enjoy , I'd hate to see people skip out on it because of bad the title sounds. Two different genres. Not that my word means much but Fata Morgana was such a great read. Haven't finished it yet but I very much enjoyed it.

Two errors I found:

1)The backlog for the 4th story is wrong. In my readings, the words are not crossed out. Also later on, it had conversations that was for another route/ending(?).

With increased competition by companies with more resources, it seems unlikely they'll get any big, Steam-worthy title. So titles like Dies Irae, Majikoi, White Album 2, Aiyoku no Eustia, etc are probably a no go. It's also worth remembering they'll save half their announcements for Otakon

Subahibi is possible, but it depends on what the logistics look like for the publisher since Moogy said they wanted to do their own thing. If that doesn't work out though, then they could basically get it by default because no one else would touch it.

Eve Burst Error R is the type of title they might have got before Tokyo Babel did poorly, and has a Hobibox connection. They'd probably regret picking it up if they did though.

They probably have something Alicesoft, Evenicle seems most likely unless they somehow got a Rance title.

More Sono Hanabira also seems very likely, considering their success with their first release of it.

For Sekai Project, any title with a nearly complete fanTL seems like a possibility. AstralAir, Koiken Otome, SakuSaku, and Witch's Garden comes to mind. It's also likely that they were able to snag another big title, like Majikoi or Aiyoku no Eustia, for a future kickstarter. Trying to guess beyond that seems foolish, as pretty much any recent Steam worthy moege is a potential pickup for them.

For Frontwing, Island is the most obvious title, though the timing on that pickup will likely depend on when the anime is planned for. With their contacts though, it's quite possible they grab some big titles for Kickstarter.

Degica should end up with Kiminozo soon, as well as other Muv Luv spinoffs. Considering the success of the Muv Luv kickstarter, they probably could get anything else they wanted if they decide to expand their visual novels beyond Age.

For Jast, they will probably try to pick up more titles that look bound to succeed on Steam judging by their AX announcements last year. Perhaps they will be able to handle the physical PC release of Steins;Gate 0 like the original, even if Steam is a no go for them.

It was back when deals announced this Summer were being made. And it still makes economic sense to send a big title through Kickstarter.

>with the weakening of the steam VN market Sekai lost a lot of it's appeal

While the steam market is surely softening, there is a time lag involved before Japan notices, deals for this Summer were announced before meaningful softening, and plenty of recent titles have still done well

>do you really think that Jast is stronger than MG?

Yes, because of J-List

>And just because a licence is popular it doesnt mean that it's more expensive, so in the end there is no reason why MG or anyone else really could get Dies Irae, Majikoi or whatever.

There are other factors involved, but for a title that multiple publishers would want to distribute, it's hard for MG, who has had weaker performance for non nukige titles, to get their hands on it. With the upcoming anime, Dies Irae especially will likely be a rather expensive license.

Do you have any data about the amount of sales of VNs in it? The only thing that J-list helps Jast is that it keeps money going in it when they take years to release something.

And publishers are always looking for licences thinking that all of MG announcements were made last year is retarded, Haruka's deal was started a few months before it was announced.

Now, obviously these announcements are going to be split between Otakon and Anime Expo.

Based on the hints they gave, I'm fairly sure they're localizing Shiei no Sona-Nyl, though they probably won't announce that until Otakon.

Kara no Shoujo 3 is a possibility if the second sold well enough in the long-run. It's getting a hard-copy, so it had to do at least serviceably well.

There's almost surely going to be a minori title somewhere in there at Anime Expo since nbkz is there. I'm going to say Tsumi no Hikari Rendevzvous, especially since it fits that Princess Evangile decent-quality moege niche with good-quality art and content. That or Natsuzora no Perseus. Either way, I doubt they'll localize an all-ages title since they already have one (Supipara) from minori.

This isn't universally true. Fags like Mimasu Kei only cry about losing sales because they keep releasing recycled shit and treat customers badly. (And even then it sells as long as the art is cute, e.g. Hataraku Otona...)

And otherwise the market is simply oversaturated. Look at any list of monthly releases, every month there's tons of stuff, it can't all sell well. Already famous brands just have to keep their quality and they're okay (not blow themselves up like Eushully). And even new makers can succeed as long as they try well enough, e.g. Lose.

I'd like to also add that the people complaining about that sort of thing are the same gender and age group as the target audience, and also the same group that tends to find that sort of stuff compelling.

I mean, typically when it comes to 'rape-y' scenarios, the (literally most common sexual fantasy amongst women) revolves around an attractive hottie not taking a 'no' for an answer. Obviously, most otome VNs have a plethora of hot guys.

So yeah, it's right in their wheelhouse. Women just like playing the denial card.

I know this feeling. It's only really valid if they're attractive though, I'd detest and actively fight being raped by a gang of hobos, for example, but I'd struggle to turn down your average male model/attractive actor.

I feel pretty vulnerable in real-life though since I fit into that androgynous femboy with an androgynous voice (trap) niche. Most of the time, people default in gendering me female.

Regardless, I've become terrified of walking around gay neighborhoods, and some of the stuff that's happened to me even just in bathrooms or in the 'gayer' parts of Toronto is absolutely terrifying and has left me with some sort of pseudo-PTSD.

Part of me feels like going all the way and living the easy life on hormones. I mean, I'm already bi, even.

English screens from Kyonyuu Fantasy. It's a HD (cropped) edition, but I think in JP version you could freely switch between 4:3 and 16:9.

>> No.15303617

>>15303578
Even if they could, I doubt they'd change it. They decided on a title and I doubt they'd want to admit to Waffle that the choice wasn't considered good. And MG would be opening a Pandora's Box by changing a localized title just because some people didn't like it.

The writer didn't want the name changed at all. It was Kyonyu Fantasy or nothing.

And that name change happened forever ago. Funbag Fantasy was intended to get Boob Wars level attention, so it was deliberate.

Did you know that spelling all those Us is weeaboo-only thing? Proper Hepburn romanisanition for English says either writting macrons above long vovels or just ignore them when they are not available in encoding/typeface etc.
For example, only weeaboo write common japanese surname as Satou, while anybody els spels it as Sato or Satō.

It is very common for Japanese ignore those redundant (for English speakers I mean) UUUUUs and macrons actually.

>For example, only weeaboo write common japanese surname as Satou, while anybody els spels it as Sato or Satō.
Satō and Satou are both correct different ways of writing it. Sato is wrong though, and it's not the same sound. This is why the romanisation rules exist, and Hepburn most certainly does not encourage one to simply drop letters that could be considered redundant, because that is not accurate romanisation.
>It is very common for Japanese ignore those redundant (for English speakers I mean) UUUUUs and macrons actually.
The Japs are terrible at English in general, so why would you expect their grasp of romanisation rules to be any point of reference worth anything?

>> No.15304148

>>15304120
> Sato is wrong though
Sato is perfectly fine, as English is fine with dropping diacritics. On the other hand, UU crap is not not presented neither in Hepburn, nor in Kunrei-Shiki which are official systems.

And OU is actually wery confusing, as there is long vovel as in 王 (/oː/) and actual separate O+U as in 追う (/oɯ/), so there is completely no point in discussing "accuracy".

tl;dr you can use whatever romanisation style, neither of them is wrong o correct.

This argument it's pretty stupid, why the hell would you pronounce foreign words according to English rules of speech?
And as the pronunciation of alphabet isn't the same in every country (especially in english) you can't impose to change the rules of romanization because you can't read it properly.
Spelling Tokyo as Tokyou is as retarted as pronounce papagayo with english fonetic.

To transcribe words from a different writing system and preserving the original phonemes.
Another thins is how any country that uses the alphabet pronounced it.
For example, the word "book" in english is read as "buk" but in another countrys can be read as "booc" or "book".
