15262532 No.15262532 [Reply] [Original]

Anime Central is upon us and so are a bunch of announcements from the different Visual Novel localizers.

I figured we might as well have a thread about this because >>15234587 has hit bump limit.

The schedules as anon >>15261695 said (Central US time):
Visual Arts - 4:00-5:30pm
Sekai Project - 5:30-7:00pm
MangaGamer - 9:00-10:30pm

MangaGamer has teased six announcements and Sekai Project two. One of MangaGamer announcements is Fatamorgana fandisc as they stealth-announced on the game itself.

Remember to not expect great things. Even if the companies say they have big announcements, at best be cautiously optimistic.

The pic was the best I could find

yes it was. angel beats was a fucking disaster. If it just stayed as a comedy it would have been fine but the final episode ruined the pacing and show entirely.

Atleast with charolette there was buildup to what was happening in the real world with the main plot. The ending was rushed and really out of place but atleast it made sense.

>> No.15263459

>>15263434
I wouldn't say "ruined the show" but yeah i never really liked Kanade so the romance was pretty boring. Yurippe was much more interesting.

The buildup was too rushed, 1-cour is not enough to build a huge setting like Maeda wanted to. Not only the ending, everything felt really out of place.

>> No.15263464

>>15263407
Angel beats was good until they killed best girl in episode 6. It could be a good goofy anime but Maeda killed it with the Key's Feels Train.
Charlotte at least make sense in the world and with the things that happen until the "big twist" with the 10th episode.

pizza imouto was pretty good in charlotte. I really don't want more of the series unless its in a different perspective with all new characters. We all know that if the series kept going it would have had NTR with the protags older brother and Nao.

>> No.15263499

>>15263480
It could be interesting if it just explores what Yuu does after he gains all the powers, there's definitely potential for some really solid stories there.
I don't think the overall narrative really needs to be stretched or that other routes need to exist, either. The anime wasn't great but it seemed to explore most of what it wanted to, unlike Angel Beats which had a large cast and seemed like it could really do with being expanded. Charlotte was really strangely paced where it felt way too slow in the middle in spite of it having so few episodes. Angel Beats always felt rushed and like it was moving at a pace faster than the story could keep up with.
Well, I don't really hate Charlotte but I am pretty indifferent towards seeing it get new media.

When said marketing is mostly done to people that don't see any value in buying VNs, I have to question if this marketing you're speaking of is good or bad to this limited fanbase.

Having a site that completely supports piracy and having people actively telling others they can get VNs for free on said site, simply encourages the thought that getting translated and even untranslated VNs are a given and they're not worth anything.

It's true this happens with video games in general in a much larger scale however, it's exactly because of this difference in scale that in smaller fanbases this hurts so much more.

It's honestly pretty stupid that some people complained about MG's Higurashi sprites being "too sexual" (I've seen it happen as well) considering Ryukishi's sprites for Higurashi are not exactly.. chaste to begin with. If you really think about it, the MG sprites are more faithful to the original designs than the PS2 sprites ever were. Seriously though, the only thing wrong with MG's sprites is that the anatomy is fucked at times, but the style itself is really nice, the coloring especially. I don't see why people make such a big deal out of it. The PS2 sprites are nice but MG's aren't horrid either, they're both fine.

Now, complaining about Umineko's I can understand since the style is pretty... unique, but I started liking it after a while, and it actually fits some of the characters perfectly, like Bernkastel and Featherine.

>> No.15265728

I don't feel their too sexual. Moreso than matsuri? Sure. But not to where the sprites are horrid. They're alright, but still can't bring myself to use them when I can use the ps2 ones.

The poses, emotions, and facial features just don't really match the characters all that well and seem off.

I found out about it from Edelweiss' Comiket trailers. One of them had Another Episodes in it and the artwork and music immediately made me want to find out more about it. I think it was shortly after that that MG announced they were bringing it over.

I doubt it would've made much of a difference. News articles don't exactly translate to sales anymore, as Kara no Shoujo 2 showed. And Fata Morgana's content, tragedy after tragedy and what some might see as tumblr content, would mean its audience is very limited.

Actually, people at MG were already already of this fact. After all, the reason why some years ago they licensed a ton of nukige was to make profit because story-oriented titles sold like shit.

To my understanding, the investment MG made on getting titles such as Tokyo Babel demonstrates that they trusted that copies sold through Steam would turn a profit even if licensing costs were high. Unfortunately, this didn't turn out to be true, as they already experienced first hand.

I wonder about Liarsoft's titles. Gahkthun wasn't originally intended for a Steam release, but got more sales once it was on the platform. I wonder if it profited between the combined sales.

All-ages vns can be really expensive because they can afford famous VAs, so I think Tokyo Babel's sales could really discourage licensing expensive story titles, especially all-ages ones.

All these only prove that the 'must have porn' crowd is very vocal and companies appease them by giving the option of an 18+ version. As with piracy, not every 'why is there no porn' thread is a lost sale, and it actually wouldn't surprise me if the majority of the people posting such remarks on the Steam forums wouldn't actually buy the game even if it did contain the porn.

>As much as dovac wanted to think that only core (read: pirating) audience cared about porn, it turns out that the paying, mainstream crowd likes fucking catgirls as well.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that's the nukige crowd buying Nekopara. Catgirl porn is very popular, and nukige fans actually buy games. I'm fairly sure the majority of the hardcore story VN fans did not buy Nekopara.

As far as I'm aware, Steam versions still outsell 18+ versions even with many people not caring about the porn but just buying them to have the more complete version. Gahkthun completely bombed on Steam despite having porn, while Konosora is still selling like hotcakes even though there's no 18+ version available.

Games can still sell well even if you remove the porn with no option to re-add it, while at the same time games are not guaranteed to do any better if you do have porn as an option. The only real reason to provide the original 18+ version is to get people (who won't even buy the game) to shut the fuck up.

It also allows you to sell a premium product, (even if only to a minority of your audience). As Steam revenues for individual visual novels continues to drop and knowledge of uncut releases being a thing increases, that is likely to become more important going forward. Also for crowdfunded projects the people who are big spenders for the crowdfunding projects disproportionately do care about such content (and the vocal displeasure you talk about for not including it is much more easily noticed).

Make that next year. They license games months in advance and didn't start seeing the problems with their all-ages plans until Tokyo Babel bombed at the end of March. They may have already licensed at least a few titles that are all-ages.

While a lot of that does make sense, I have to think there are economic reasons for Sekai Project to be much more willing to talk about uncut releases openly. There was a good reason they initially kept it as an impenetrable wall between Sekai and Denpasoft. It might be Nekopara (and to a lesser degree Sakura Shit) uncut releases are important enough that they make it worth it, it might be Indiegogo and their flexible funding looks very nice for their 18+ doujin, or it might be their upcoming big moege titles are well known enough they believe having an uncut release is worthwhile (especially if they plan to put them on Kickstarter). At the very least though, something appears to have changed their calculations for how they treat 18+ content through Sekai's official channels.

The only reason Denpasoft exists, the ONLY reason, is because Frontwing demanded that the R18 release of Grisaia be released as separately as possible from the all ages version. Now that Sekai has no reason to pander to Frontwing who have more or less gone rogue for the localisation of everything, including Grisaia properties, that they're not contractually obliged to provide with Sekai Project, Dovac no longer has any reason to keep Denpasoft separate.
