I used to always play as a male character, unless the game had gender-linked classes (i.e. Diablo). Even though I know that most female characters are actually guys, and I don't RP, I'd still automatically refer to female characters with female pronouns, and if the guy wants to get pissed it's his own damn fault for playing a female character. Basically I'd perceive the character as an extension of the user, and so no way was I playing a female character (also on that note, I always used original names, no Final Fantasy bullshit or anything like that).

Then at some point I started using female characters more often... my main character (that other people would identify as "me")would always be male, but I'd sometimes make female alts just for variety.

Now thanks to /jp/ and Touhou I always make female characters (loli if possible, but I'm not particular), and ever since Mabinogi I use Touhou names.

Girl character (since I am male IRL) if I actually get decent armor that is not a fucking bikini with +500 armor or shit like that. I would much prefer playing as a girl with huge ass plate armor and a powerful melee weapon, as that is the type of character I like to play. DOMO is a fairly good example: you can be a female mercenary and have practical looking armor.
