There's plenty of ugly doujin VNs, but those are unfair to pick on, really. (since they're often done by people who aren't artists)

Agreed. I was somewhat fond of MOON.'s artistic style and direction. ONE started moving away from it, but I didn't mind the art. Kanon, AIR and Clannad essentially proceeded towards 'processing' that style away to the point where I stopped liking it.. stopped looking at it, basically. I can tell this because I have a habit of screenshotting and saving things I like when I'm playing VNs. Plenty of screenshots from ONE and MOON., only a couple apiece from Air and Kanon, and none at all from Clannad.

One and Moon had a kind of soft doujin quality feel to them, like the art wasn't all that great but it didn't try to be anything else, so it had a kind of charm of its own. But with Air and Kanon, I think the artist tried too hard to improve her characters and as a result it fell apart and they look pretty terrible in most scenes, which is kind of a shame because I think Air and Kanon have the best stories. Her art in Clannad is much better, but even Tomoyo After has better art.

Katawa shoujou sounded like an awful concept. One that's even worse is that hongfire effort, Heroines or something. The art was...special.

This is the thing: the most uncommon skillset needed to create a VN is art. So any project that isn't started by an artist is doomed to failure or a laughable joke like the above mentioned games.
