Best Touhou game?

Perfect Cherry Blossom the best in my opinion. Followed closely by Mountain of Faith.

I like Imperishable Night for it's refined engine, excellent music, and extra features like spell practice. Too easy? Smile when you say that on Lunatic Mode and the Last Spells.

Second would be Perfect Cherry Blossom. Immensely difficult but strikes a good balance between memorization and split-second raw reflex. Also had good music and the best characters.

Third is Subterranean Animism. Really freakin hard but the new shot types and bombs are cool, making you adjust your strategy and movements. Not a fan of the music except stage 4 and Extra.

Fourth is Mountain of Faith. System was overly simplified but it had unique spells and good music.

Fifth is Scarlet Devil. Being the first Windows game, it looks and sounds primitive. Liked the characters, but the spell cards seem less creative.

MoF is my favorite. It is the most fun to play on Lunatic difficulty, and it borrows gameplay elements from some of my favorite shoot-em-ups. Music-wise, Japanese ZUN ditches a lot of bad habits from earlier games, and pumps out a OST of surprisingly consistent quality.

And for some odd reason, I actually care about the characters for once. I know I didn't when I played PCB and IN.

To date, my favorite battle in Touhou to date is the climactic Last Spell-barrage with Kaguya and the Border Team.

"What's this? The ones who caused the Imperishable Night... It was YOU, wasn't it?!

Imperishable Night is the best: most features (Spell Practice anyone?), most characters, most levels, best story, and overall, the most polished. Not necessarily the most fun to play, but definitely the most well-done of the games.

Perfect Cherry Blossom is a pretty close second.
