I was playing a tournament's placement round.
Every single hand started in uushanten or higher.
The dealer won off me 3 times and tsumo 5 times ever though I was into complete betaori.

I reached the last round as dealer with ONE HUNDRED POINTS, toimen with 60k points.
It was hopeless

But my hand started becoming a chiitoitsu with two dora
Then drew sanankou
Then, a sanankou tenpai
Then, 20 tiles from the end, suuankou tenpai

A direct hit from the toimen would have meant an amazing comeback win

Ryuukyoku
Everyone tenpai
Game end

I doubt that, unless by 'tried reading' you mean scan reading it once without giving it any attention

Mahjong's only difficulty, if you can even call it that, is remembering the yaku, and they fit in a single page.
It's not hard.
You're just not putting any effort into it.

It's probably simply that megumi noticed there were still two unaccounted-for haku, rather than actually recalling that someone way earlier had considered pon, but on the other hand remembering when someone chooses not to call a dragon/wind seems like a good practice. The limit on kandora has a purpose though, to make sure that there are enough tiles to finish the game. If you had too many then you wouldn't have enough left over for full number of draws. Actually thats the main purpose of the wall to keep track of draws.

Cheating is not that easy as they make it look in Akagi and besides that isn't really relevant outside of gambling unless you your friends are assholes.

>> No.14485293

>They make set up take longer
It doesn't take that much longer unless you're playing with people who are new to it.
>put arbitrary limits on kandora
Arbitrary limits? If you allow more kandora then you also need more uradora, which effectively results in a lengthening of the dead wall and therefore the shortening of the live wall. Washizu mahjong only allows 70 discards, which is the same as having a standard-sized dead wall.
>you can get penalized for bumping them
Only if you overturn a whole bunch of tiles, and you'd be pretty retarded to do that.
>as anyone who has watched Akagi will know, they make it much easier to cheat
Cheating isn't as easy as it looks. Stacking the wall is hard, and unless you can pull that off then switching tiles from the wall isn't that effective. Realistically speaking, nobody's even going to bother trying unless you're playing with some jerk friends.

Yes, most of the time I agree. Mangan is kind of the threshold, in my oponion, though.
It's not THAT high that I would priorize getting it over everything. If I can get a tenpai for a mangan hand with 5 han early in the round I would call riichi. With an early riichi your chance of winning by tsumo are pretty good plus you decrease the chance of your opponents winning, since they will likely defend. This together with the guaranteed increase to haneman seems worth the call to me. Of course the point situation must also be taken into account. I'm talking about a situation early in the game with everybody having a similiar amount here.

Shogi is basically a more in-depth chess. It introduces three new types of piece, the Lance, the Silver General, and the Gold General, as well as the fact that promoting your pieces gives them specific movement patterns instead of just choosing a piece that you want.

It's really interesting, and looks like it could be pretty fun. If you want to learn, here's a good place to do it: http://ancientchess.com/page/play-shogi.htm

Fine then.

On East 2 you broke up your tenpai for seemingly no reason. Did you have bad feeling about the 7 man or something?

On East 3 you dropped your wind tile on the first draw, then when you got a second one, you kept it. I can't even imagine the reason. It looked like you considered chitsu or something, then changed your mind. You ended in tenpai, but with a clear goal, you would have easily won that hand.

On the first South 3 you were clearly going for a hon itsu, yet you threw out a tile that could be useful for a tile that wasn't of that suit. I don't get why.

On the second South 3, if you thought the 9 pin was a safer tile, you could have kan'd it and gotten another tile. This is just my personal opinion, but if I have a lot of a tile, that means that other people don't have that tile. If that's the case, I see it as it's more likely they need that tile, so I wouldn't have thrown out the 2 sou there, even if it would buy two more safe turns. Especially since all of the 1 sous were out. But that part is just my point of view on the subject.

>> No.14489332

>>14489322
Oh, 1 more thing. When going for Toi Toi, generally you should make your pairs the most likely tiles to be thrown out such as terminals, or worthless honors. When you called on the 9 sous, I think you should have thrown away a 5 man. It would have led to you getting the 1 sou right after. This might have led to a victory, or maybe not. Who knows?

8s discard was bad. Should've discarded chun and ton first.
E2:
Why discard 3s? 6s was safe and the 2s shanpon was dead. And then why discard the 2s pair so you could keep 556p? You're going back shanten. Then when you drew the third 5p, 7s was a bad choice. Even if you wanted to break up the furiten 58s ryanmen, you should've started with 6s. That way, you keep the 47s ukeire. And then you chi 7p for the kataagari 14m ryanmen? If you were going to do that then you should've just chi'd the 4s earlier.
E3:
Should discard 8p before 9s. 4m was bad, you lose 36m ukeire and only gain 7s ukeire which would leave you with a weak shanpon. You got the 5s but then why discard the 58s ryanmen instead of the penchan? You lose dora but you gain tanyao pinfu. 3m was dangerous against kamicha's sanshoku.
E3-1:
Why discard 2p over 4s? Why discard 2m?
E4:
Yeah mahjong certainly is all about luck, huh?
S1:
Why break up the 7p kanchan to keep 1s? Why hold onto the xia? Xia was safe enough to justify keeping iishanten for 5800.
S2:
2p was a big backfire. Should've discarded chun first.
S3:
2m? You don't need to force honitsu. First place is too far ahead. Just focus on securing second with the fastest hands you can get.
S3-1:
4p? No way. Stop holding onto the dora when you don't need to. 6m? Buddy you don't need toitoi at all. 1s? That was the best toitsu you had. 5m is much harder to pon. You absolutely deserved to lose this round.
S3-2:
1s was bad. Toitsu/penchan vs toitsu/kanchan, break up the penchan first. Alternatively discard 8m, but that'd leave you with a poor shape later on. Why damaten? Should riichi immediately here. If it weren't for that one turn delay, toimen might not have discarded 3p, and if not for that he might not have pon'd the 2s.
S4:
9p pon? Toitoi nomi isn't enough to make a comeback, even with a direct hit on anyone. You should've stayed closed here.

To me shogi's most interesting deviation from normal chess has always been the way captured pieces remain a constant threat. Every pawn taken from you could end up being the piece that turns the game in the opponent's favor.

I started with gamedesign's shogi, thinking it might be good given how their mahjong is one of the best out there for AI games. It was pretty terrible.

The first discards somebody makes indicate what they aren't going for. Going off that, somebody is closer to tenpai when they stop discarding tiles that match their first discards.

Of course, that's a trick I saw in Akagi so it may be totally worthless.

Exactly what I needed. Thanks for taking your time on those. Kinda felt like my game is on a dead end recently since I've lost my grasp on proper discarding of tiles and when to go and not to go. I have the tendency to go instantly to betaori whenever someone riichis and I feel like I'm holding back myself a lot when I'm in tenpai or when I keep useless dora tiles.

>> No.14490451

Oh and another question. How do you deal with live honor tiles/unneeded doras mid game? I know it could just be a simple 'just discard it' but I don't suppose that's really the best option. Also I really am aware of my poor intuition on reading waits.

>> No.14490487

>>14490433
>I have the tendency to go instantly to betaori whenever someone riichis and I feel like I'm holding back myself a lot when I'm in tenpai
If you're in tenpai yourself or even isshanten, you don't necessarily need to go full betaori. It depends on your chances of completing your hand and it's possible value as well as the point situation. If your hand value is low and/or your wait is shitty and has only 4 or so outs you should usually defend. If you're in tenpai with a ryanmen wait or better and a high value hand just continue to attack. If it's somewhere in between try a controlled offense. Discard tiles that are remotely safe (e.g. suji, yakuhai with 1 or more out) but still keep your chances to complete your hand. Also the points you have are really important. If your first place late in the game you should obviously play more defensively than if you're last place. The position of the dealer is aso important. Imagine the following situation: It is S4 round, you are in last place, 400 points behind 3rd place. 3rd place is dealer and another player has called riichi, your hand is in tenpai but the wait is bad. The correct choice here is to go into defense. If the riichi player wins by tsumo or from the 3rd place you likely get into 3rd place, since the dealer pays double. This has a higher chance of happening than you winning against the other riichi with your crappy wait. If 3rd place would not be dealer however, you should attack.

>>14490451
>How do you deal with live honor tiles/unneeded doras mid game?
Just diacrd them. That's really the best option most of the time. Isolated honour tiles should be discarded early. Personally I favor the following discard order most of the time: Isolated unrelated winds -> isolated terminals -> isolated 8s -> isolated yaku tiles -> either isolated 3-7s or breaking apart bad taatsu like 1-2, depending on the situation.
Keeping a dora a bit longer is ok, but don't break apart a good taatsu like 3-5 just to keep your dora 8.
At the end of the day this depends on how close your hand is to tenpai. If you are in 2-shanten or better always discard isolated tiles that don't help, no matter if Dora or not.

It's a situational thing really. Most of the time I discard them, but if it's something like mid/late mid, someone has an open hand, looks like they're in tenpai, and my hand isn't mangan or above, I fold. I fold like a wet noodle probably more often than I should, but it feels worth it when you take second because you avoided dealing in to a toi toi + honors out of paranoia. Open hands in general make me cautious.
If first is 20k points ahead, and I don't have a dealer turn to go, I give up on first and aim for second. Positive points are more important than aiming for first.

How often should I call riichi on a ryanmen wait when I'm on 2nd/3rd place and the 4th is not ways behind? Or in general, should I just call riichi whenever I get a ryanmen wait?

>> No.14490696

>>14490604
If it's not the last round and there is no extraordinary situation, like someone having a huge hand (e.g. you see him having a dora kan or something like that) calling riichi with ryanmenm is usually a good idea (of course you also need to look at how many tiles are still alive. If 6 out of your 8 tiles are already out, the ryanmen wait is pointless).
There are some exceptions, though. Don't call riichi within the last 5 or so go arounds. The chance of winning becomes too small otherwise.
Don't call riichi if your hand is worth 8k points or more even without riichi. At this point you should just aim to finish the hand as quickly as possible.

In the last round things are different because the point situation becomes especially important. Consider if the additional points if the riichi could help you get to a higher place, and also if the 1k payment from riichi could make you lose a place in case you don't win. If you lead in the last round, don't call riichi if you have any other yaku.

I can't enjoy Fukumoto's mahjong manga after actually learning the rules.
It's just so absurd,t he kind of predictions the characters are able to make from discards that wouldn't have any special meaning at the very start of a hand, or the very concept of 'hunting down a player'.

In the vast majority of games your hand will maybe get into a cheap tenpai, there is no way you could 'hunt' someone day unless you had a miracle hand that allowed you to pick and choose what to wait on. And even then, not only you'd have to pick the wait, you'd have to do so based on your 100% accurate prediction of what the other person is going to be discarding, before that person is even in tenpai.

Akagi is at least entertaining because it's basically dragonball with mahjong tiles and drawnout similes, but series like Ten that actually try to pretend there is some deep and complicated strategy in play are just annoying.

It's only worth reading because of Akagi being a filthy cheater and Hiroyuki learning from him, but the actual mahjong part of it is the worst.

That only annoys me even more. There's no such thing as 'flow', the only reason why that term exists in every gambling game is because people on a winning streak tend to play more recklessly because they feel invincible, thus making risky wins more likely.

But then they inevitably lose like statistics dictate, and they say 'the flow changed'.

A good player wins an even spread of 40 games over 100, he doesn't a win a single series of 10 games then loses the remaining 90.

>> No.14494289

>>14494280
It is somewhat true in the sense that a player who constantly loses will likely get demotivated and 'tune out' of the game, being more likely to make small mistakes which lead to them losing more.

I don't know what to tell you other than it's not supposed to be realistic. It's much more entertaining this way in my opinion, if I want to experience realistic mahjong I can just play it.

I mean these series are not supposed to teach you mahjong they're supposed to entertain you.

>> No.14494333

>>14494308
I'm not disagreeing on that.
Series like Saki and Akagi are fun because they're complete bullshit and they know it, they have powers, they have people who can 'draw' certain tiles closer to themselves or cause upsets with their 'special skill'.
Even when Akagi goes full flow, it's still fun because you see him cheat, and his amazing play isn't chalked up to 'amazing luck', but to him being a scumbag.

But Ten goes on in explainations about how everything is logical, how the strategies totally make sense and are the mark of a genius of mahjong. That's just offputting.

I guess it's worse in that regard than his other works but the best parts of Ten weren't even when they were playing mahjong.

It didn't really bother me that much, even though they kept touting Akagi as a genius I felt that was just kind of how other people viewed him and Ten fucked up more than anyone else while playing.

Akagi also didn't cheat all that much honestly, I don't think he cheated during Washizu at all.
