first time posting here

I'll be visiting Japan for 17 days starting October 2nd. My plan so far is to stay in Tokyo for 4 days and then travel across the country. I bought a Japan Rail Pass which allows me to take almost any train in the country so I'm basically free to go whereever. It's my first time being in Japan so I'm not entirely sure if I'm missing out on something important in my preparations. I can speak basic Japanese, read kana and a few kanji and I also have a dictionary on my tablet if necessary so communication should be managable. I also downloaded the openstreetmap for Japan so I shouldn't get lost even when there is no wifi available.

What I'm looking for are suggestions as for what to do and where to go in the country, I'm fairly flexible. Rather than plan everything in advance I'll just move around via train and stay in hostels at a short notice. Some places I already plan to check out are Fujisan, Himeji Castle, the old town of Kyoto, Akihabara, Shibuya, and a nice Onsen somewhere (if they let foreigners in)

I'm open for any suggestions and discussion and would appreciate help if you think I've forgot something important or if there's something I need to know before going to Japan.

Stay inside. Don't leave your hotel room. Outside is scary.

Have you asked /trv/ and /int/ yet? I'm fairly certain they'll give you a TODO list long enough without any otaku culture material added in.

I haven't, that might be a good idea actually. I don't use either of those boards nor /jp/ but I figured /jp/ would be the right place to ask about Japan

Contrary to popular belief, the jp in /jp/ doesn't stand for Japan. It stands for joshikousei pantsu. Which you now must take pictures of and share them on this board when you return.

Depends entirely on what you prefer and like.
Architecture, beaches, electronics, busy downtown hustling, rural areas...

17 Days is a lot man, I wish I could go again!

Anyway, plan two days for fuji(!) Plan ahead well, watch the weather forecast and inform yourself. Start climbing the mountain early at night with the mountain guides. Usually a handful of locals gather very early to reach the top before dawn! Incredible view, I hope you plan on climbing it.

I am not really the anime guy so my visit to aki was very short. I was very fond of kyoto and takayama especially, very relaxing. Though some might find it boring. Thats where it its up to the person.

There is pelenty to see in Osaka aswell. Those shop/bar streets are quite a show and then there is also its castle.

My most cherished moments have been in fukuoka though. I arrived there in my second week after hustling and hunting for all those sightseeings around honshu (central island).

I did not want to leave this place anymore so I flat out cancelled the rest of the plan and remained there for the rest of the week.
Those beaches, mountains and the view across the city. It a fairly large city but with very few tall skyscrapes so you have a great view over the city and onto the sea and with all those peninsulas.
The local activities are also endless and lots to visit with a great and healthy mix of new and old.
And then there is the food... uah

If I every go again I'll start there and move further down to okinawa. For some reason I have no interest in the north.

Good luck and have fun!

That sounds like you had a pretty good time. My plane arrives and departs from Narita airport in Tokyo so I will have to make a roundtrip. Good advice on Mt Fuji, I definitely do want to climb it so I will have to look into where I can sign up for such a tour. I'll definitely check out Fukuoka too, however I probably won't be going to any of the further away islands.

Is it culturally acceptable to start conversations with random strangers on the train or will people be generally annoyed if you do?

>>14159613
will I glow in the dark after staying there? I just read that most onsens don't let in foreigners though, I guess I'll just research more in detail once I'm near one

It makes me unironically sad to know that this is what most of /jp/ actually believes... .... ...

So it isn't true then? From what I've researched many sources say that Onsens are often only open to native Japanese and only if they don't have any tattoos too.

And there's a bouncer in front of most exclusive nightclubs. The point is there are also onsens which let foreigners in, considering how big japan's tourism industry is and how absolutely retarded it would be for a small business in the tourism industry to ignore tourists.

A train might not be the best place to start conversations. However, when visiting an Izakaya or even a maid cafe it is very easy to engage with the Japanese. I hope you speak Japanese. Japanese are usually not very keen on commuicating in English. I could always feel their relief when they saw that I wanted to converse in Japanese and not in English.

I've taken japanese classes at my uni from a japanese teacher for about a year. I can engage in basic conversation and my pronounciation shouldn't be too terrible. But this will definitely be a learning experience. I suck at Kanji but there's apps to scan and translate them if I really need to.

Talk about music, you'll make many friends. I've had plenty of sales people/wait staff take me out for lunch/drinks after meeting them so that we could continue sharing stories and my Japanese is shit.
It's okay, if they want to get to know you, they'll break out their english.

Sad that this is what /jp/ has become. Instead of outright telling the retard to fuck off, he gets spoonfed to the point where he actually feels welcome to shit up the place some more.

If you videogame/manga/aidoru weebs don't want general interest weebs on your board, why haven't you forced management to rename it /ota/ or something?

Calling the place /jp/ then getting pissed off when people treat it like a Japan general interest board is pretty silly tbh fam.

Such as? Have you ever seen one or are you just quoting shit you heard from some other gullible idiot online?

Japanese establishments "not serving foreigners" is a myth. I've been to dozens of onsen, sometimes in the middle of fuck nowhere in the countryside, and nobody has ever batted an eye other than to perhaps ask where I'm from and comment that it's unusual to see whitey out here. I have no clue how the idea got started, my only guess is that there was an isolated incident at some point in the past and it got perpetuated by butthurt expat assholes and gullible travellers like OP.

If you know of someplace that doesn't accept white people please let me know where it is. I'd like to experience this wanton discrimination for myself so that I too can have a license to blame everything bad that happens to me on racism.
