14061093 No.14061093 [Reply] [Original]

I'm usually very impartial to the "2hu is dead" crowd, but only after replaying IN today did I realized how different the newer installments are from the old ones. Even though the graphic is shinier, and the music is still full of ZUNpet, I couldnt feel the same kind of excitement when clearing the game anymore. The newer games feel as if I'm playing some doujin stg or something. All the charms are gone.
What has changed /jp/?

DDC and LoLK still have some interesting characters and good tracks, but it felt like ZUN was trying too hard too write a serious story.Whimsical overpowered mythical beings fucking with people lives is what made touhou fun in the first place.

Just stop, DDC and LoLK are less serious than expected.

One is a rebellion and the other is invasion, yet both are still lighthearted and wacky as fuck.

PCB and IN seem to me to have this traditional Japanese folklore/aesthetic/basis to me which I like. The religion games are interpretations of history, which I don't like as much. LoLK has characters based in tradition, but the story... I don't know.

I posted >>14061169. It's hard to explain what I mean. The magnitude of the plot in LoLK seems way larger, in the sense that it seems like more of a wholly original plot and seemed like it could truly warp the nature Gensokyo.

Red mist is just, like, red mist, and the moon was coming back in the morning.

>> No.14061425

>>14061416
Red mist can kill Gensokyo if it goes on, the fake moon was driving the youkai crazy and Yukari froze the night.

LoLK is larger in scope but in the end because it's a continuation of IN, SSiB but in the end it's still wacky with some seriousness.

i didn't care for ddc, the point device gimmick was the only thing that revitalized my interest in the series. i agree with you, though, too many people have started copying the zun style for their own danfuku fangames, it doesn't feel as unique anymore. the newhous feel weird and forced at first, like fan characters. I think I'm just more emotionally attached to the old cast

>> No.14063030

IN is shit though. Try EoSD and PCB.

>> No.14064385

Are they really that different? They feel more polished, but not really that different...
It has been evolving, of course if you compare them specially against something like IN. In fact, ZUN felt he was going in the wrong direction with IN and kind of rebooted with MoF.
My favorite is still SA, even though I played all the previous ones first.
I think you just have nostalgia googles, LoLK has a truckload of charm, so does UFO and to a lesser degree DDC and TD. I feel the first half of TD is pretty great, and so is the second half of DDC and most importantly it spawned ISC which is really fun.
TD is the one that feels the most bland, but it's because it was so easy, I 1cced it on normal on my second try so I didn't feel the need to come back and the characters/plot/music never had the time to stick to me.
Of course, if you add up nostalgia, 20000000000000000000000 doujins/threads/videos/arranges of the old games, you're going to come back and feel they're more special...

>> No.14064390

>>14064385
Forgot to mention Great Fairy Wars, if that doesn't have charm I don't know what does, and it doesn't even have ZUN drawing the art (I wish)

>> No.14064510

>>14064385
As someone who got into properly playing the Touhou games to 1cc them, I started with TD because of its reputable ease, and boy did it grow on me.
I wouldn't say it's my favourite, but it's still quite enjoyable with its Desire Drive, Futo poses and almost cliche dialogue for the final boss.

Though I think the pointdevice mode on LoLK really ruins the tempo I'm used to, stage 5 felt plenty final already, and then you're left with stage 6 with simple looking spell cards that take a bunch of tries to complete, it doesn't give you that final boss emotional rush compared to something like PCB or DDC.

>> No.14064562

ZUN seems so focused on general mechanics and not on character diversity, I want reasons to use Marisa over Sanae besides power, that kind of variety made PCB such fun. I also wish he would put more options in the options menu,

>> No.14064600

I don't like the newer games because I liked getting lives from collecting a certain amount of items instead of having them distributed in some other weird way.

I also dislike the power percentages for some reason, probably because I'm still bothered by the games that drained your percentages for using bombs.

>I noticed this, too, but once you get used to the increasing difficulty, the new games are great
This. Sometimes I think that some of the people who prefer the original trilogy over any of the games that came afterwards are shitters who can't get past Yuugi or are too stupid to collect the UFOs.

>> No.14065829

They are indeed different, but not in a bad way I think.
6-8 are classic. They spawned multiple songs that will be alive for the next decade.
10-12 are also good enough, 11 and 12 are harder than the rest (Except for LoLK legacy), they have good music too. It is clear that after PoFV, Zun changed the direction of the game, tried new styles of music (read, Nuclear Fusion, Captain Murasa etc). He also added multiple new sprites for bullets and mobs.
12.8 is fucking great. It has the best graphics (I mean sprites and bullets, the portrait is not drawn by ZUN).
13 is so-so but it is not that bad either. It's friendly for new people.
14 is nothing like the previous ones, I must say. But it is a fun game and has good music. The thing is that after 13 and kancolle, people stopped caring about touhou as much as before, hence less music, less impacting doujin, less fan arts etc. And of course you are not attached to the characters in 13-14-15 as much as the ones in 6-8 because you have met them a fuck lots.
15 is fucking great. It is rushed at some points but generally I like the characters, it's pretty ZUN-ish. The music is also great (except for Hecatia).
In the end, ZUN doesn't give a shit about what fan thinks and do what he want with his game (Junko's junky spellcards).
I think that you just like the old characters too much to except new ones. When Okuu comes out, people shit on her a lot too.

Seriously, it was just designed with pointdevice in mind. Legacy mode is completely unbalanced, especially for Sanae who can bombspam everything.

New games are less lighthearted. Ever since Sinner was finished the series became more "serious" with more character development. Initially, ZUN kept everything wide and open so to let the fans build the characters; he's doing a bit less of that now. This is exasperated since we have less doujin, because of Shit Collection.

But Imperishable Night is one of the more quirky entries in the series, it's arguably the best.

Also, Touhou is STILL a doujin game, so you are just playing some doujin stg. Just a popular one (by doujin standards).

>>14063010
LoLK is pointdevice, DDC was pretty regular.

>>14065933
I think PD was made as both further experimentation with infinite retries and to make the game more accessible. If playing on legacy, it becomes more focused around reaction-based dodging. Remilia had reaction dodging, but you aren't complaining about that. It's not completely unbalanced, it's just focusing on a different skill that the other games didn't prepare you for. Even a monkey could 1 life clear extra IN if given the time, as long as it's pattern dodging.

There's not even a point if the entire game is based on pattern-dodging, you aren't playing the game, you're just moving from point A>B. You'd have as much interaction with an Etch+Sketch and your imagination. You think it's 'completely unbalanced' because it doesn't play to your skills or like any of the other games did.
