Most of the interesting bits about the Touhou characters are how they relate to one another. Reimu is a sarcastic friend to Marisa, who steals book from Patchouli, who is friend to Remila...

Plomping in a generic MC (probably male too) in the middle of that would be a bizzare sight. I remember reading some sort of story about a typical dungeon and dragon mage getting dropped in Gensokyo, and that worked well because the guy had character (IE blow up everyone and loot everything) and could interact well with the cast.

Most of the interesting touhou story is about how the characters are tied, and how they blow up one another. A bland MC would not fit in.

But yeah, there are many of these fucks, especially here. Like that other guy, fragmentation of memory, who wrote a self-insert story about a character who can change his form at will, fucks Yukari, get in a fight with the moonbitches and win.

The problem is that people can't or don't want to write a story from one of the girls' perspective, or they feel restricted by the girl's personality. Or their own lack of imagination.
So they make an original character to gain liberty, but the problem is that it takes the attention away from the girls.

Unless the original character is a mute, but I have yet to read a story where the main character is just a spectator witnessing weird stuff going on around him.

Hey, that's an interesting idea, I'm writing it down.

>>13986708
I respectfully disagree. With the sheer spread of personalities, origins and vagueness among the 2hu cast, any enterprising writer could find their fit. The issue, however, is that:
1) Most of us are male, and many are quite incapable of identifying with a female character unless she happens to own a pecker (courtesy of Eirin's shady new drug)
2) We all want to fug the 2hus. Simple as that. God, what wouldn't I give to have my way with Raymoo.

On the other hand, adopting a 2hu as the story's protagonist would not only preclude a male (i.e. self-insertable) mindset in terms of character, it would also remove much potential for crossover shenanigans (outsider guy x Gensokyo being one of the more popular).

It's neither impossible nor even difficult to write a story from a 2hu's perspective. I've done it myself, and I'm no David Eddings. It's just that in terms of preference, we just prefer our hero guy to be... well, a guy.

Also, drop the fucking trip already, Hartmann.

>> No.13986853

>>13986800
Define "fug", because while most, if not all of the stories are centered on the character's relationships with the girl, not all of them are smut, and a few of them actually have an interesting plot.
I can't remember any COYA with a good plot, but I think there was one by the Owen guy who was okay. It's been a while through.

>Most of us are male, and many are quite incapable of identifying with a female character unless she happens to own a pecker
I respectfully disagree with that. While it is harder for a male reader to identify with a female character, saying it's impossible is excessive. Like CYOAs to begin with, it requires some "suspension of disbelief".

As for the rest, well, I keep disagreeing. While using a Touhou as a main character does make it harder to have a male main character (Rinnosuke is kinda boring, Unzan and Genji are jokes), I fail to see how it remove the potential for crossovers.
I mean, just look at all the High School AU. Granted, they're comics and not stories, but they're still crossovers, without original characters and they work (kinda).
Did Taisa ever resumed his story by the way? Last time I saw him, he was crying over something menial.
The main character is only a point of view. Whether he's male or female doesn't really matter, what's really important is what takes place around it. Unless your story is focused on logical and constant reactions to events, like Myouren's story, where a bad vote had horrible effects on the character's relation with Mima. In that case where though process is important, then, yeah, it's better to have a character that the reader can identify with. Even through it's a bad example, since Anonymous wanted to fuck Byakuren and the writefag made it clear that Myouren was disgusted by the idea.

As for the trip, well, nah. I need it to defend the name of the moonhoneys who have been abused too much since LoLK came out.
Screw your murican fairy, pleb!

Hence "many are quite incapable." Not "all." This applies as well to writers, whose "female" leads often end up simply being males in female skin. Girls with peckers, if you catch my drift.

Bottom line is, while writers often can and are willing to write stories from (canon) female perspectives, at the end of the day inserting as an outsider stranded in Gensokyo, who inevitably ends up with the hou2 of his choice, is simply too appealing a vision. The western fan base is too fragmented and disorganized to produce something as complex as a VN. There's a small number of writers - maybe 3 or 4 - who have the experience and commitment, but almost no artists or composers who are confident and prolific enough for that level of project output.

Every attempt at this so far has ended up with a dozen+ rookie writers all trying to write different parts of a sprawling, unmanageable narrative without any central conflict except "I wanna fuck 2hus". The first step to a working VN project is to have one good writer and artist, a coherent vision, and the commitment to finish it.

Let's face it, most 'aspiring writers' don't finish what they start.

>why even bother if it's going to be yurishit?

Because that's what the writer wants to write?

I'd like to use this post to illustrate a wider point about why the western fandom has so much trouble producing anything of value.

Writing is much like warfare: rookies talk tactics, amateurs talk strategy, and professionals talk logistics. Arguing about the gender of the protagonist or the degree of acceptable self-insert is like worrying about the colour of the curtains before you've even laid the foundations. It's immaterial.

I was on the ground floor with the old Touhou VN Project about six years ago now, and the reason it crashed and burned and never went anywhere is that everything was designed by committee, everybody had to throw their stuff into the pot, everyone had to be satisfied, the story had to be as bland and acceptable as possible, anticipating some kind of "perfect otaku" audience - not too much of this, not too much of that, not too extreme in either one direction or the other. It had no passion, no purpose, no drive.

Any writer with the skill and staying power to spend hundreds or thousands of hours of their life on writing a good visual novel is not going to listen to what anybody else insists is the correct way. They are going to follow their own obsessions, and write as much for themselves as for their audience. And if the story, the themes, the ideas, the conflict, the narrative they have chosen, if those things demand a male or female protagonist, then that is what they'll write.

And that's why the western fandom produces so little; everyone is arguing about the colour of the fucking curtains.

Nothing change. Everything was still the same one year ago.

I think the language barrier + experience harms a lot the whole thing. I have a whole idea for a VN, and I know a writer, a composer and an artist who already said they would work with me (in fact the artist already made some character designs). I have some txts filled with world building and the like, but I decided to read many VNs in japanese (as I spent the two last years learning it, and know enough to read) so I can gather experience in the medium, and see what writers have done, and what they're doing. Many writers jump into VNs with little to no experience in the medium, as there are few translations, and most of them are between horrible and mediocre. You need to know what the medium is capable of, and utilize the experience you gather in reading to put it in the VN.

That's basically why I like Katawa Shoujo.
Despite being overrated, it's still a VN that was written in English to begin with, which makes it a better read, as opposed to translated VNs who sometimes are very weird.

In fact, I'd say reading theater or movies scripts is better to get experience in VNs.

that's wrong. The western fanbase can't create because western education in general doesn't teach children how to draw, so we produce less artists and they're also less talented. This forces fans who want to create to band together which causes drama and fighting

Just came into this thread and read most of what everyone said, beyond shitposting and whatnot. I have to say, as a wannabe VN writer myself, having the setting defined and the characters who you want to interact with already present makes it a helluva lot easier than writing from point zero. Hell, I could start a script up right now if anyone wanted it. Even have a couple of ideas in mind. I'm able to pump out well over 8k words an hour if I actually bother. I've never written works based on other peoples' settings myself, but it can't be too difficult at all unless the creator himself intervenes, and I doubt ZUN's gonna get on my ass for some fan VN.

Sure, let's start.
>College-age, Western visionary with a goal of exploring the world and seeing it with his own eyes ends up trekking from a country in the West all the way to the Far East, namely in Japan which was one of his high-priority goals.
>After crossing the ocean and getting his papers all worked through, he eventually goes innawoods solo for a couples of weeks, enjoying the terrain and slowly becoming more enriched with the culture, learning new things along the way, etc.
>The prologue ends with him losing track of his path after a major storm hits while he's off the grid, forcing him to give it all he's got to keep warm. He eventually ends up passing out at the top of a set of stone stairs; a traditional Shinto shrine being his last view before his vision goes blank, and the first thing he sees when he wakes up.
There, five minutes of thinking and there's, what, 1% done? Of course I'd flesh everything out, but it's not that difficult.

Right. So a script would be a couple thousand words-worth of content, then? Would that suffice to prove that it's not too difficult? Granted, I've never written in VN format before, though I have a fair share of experience in first person.

Oh, Christ, I remember my feelings upon that. It took me three different sessions of play to get past the burg, if I remember right. Couldn't get the map layout down in my head for the life of me. Then I upped my 3D thinking and now I could probably sketch out the whole game without looking. 2.5k+ hours on the game does that to you.

And -- yeah, you're right, there's always challenges. For one, while I do know basic CSS, VN coding is beyond me. My art isn't good enough for VN purposes, nor do I even have a scanner anymore. There's a lot that would get in my way if this were a solo job.

I was incompetent when I first started playing. By "burg" I meant the whole area up until the first bonfire near the ladder. Yeah, I was that bad. And then I got gud.

I could get my girlfriend to do some art, she's pretty good. Or just use someone's like you said. With permission, of course. I suppose using Ren'py wouldn't be too bad, I could likely learn it in a day. Then there's one thing that a friend mentioned a couple months ago, a Ren'py mod to make text cover the whole screen like in F/sn or Umineko. That'd be my preferred way of doing it.

Oh, but it is possible. It's even pretty simple.

For advanced stuff, you'll need to know Python. I managed to do fine without by by jury-rigging and reverse-engineering stuff I found, but it's honestly better to just know Python to begin with.
Also I never finished a VN despite working on at least ten of them. That probably has an influence.

Now all we need is a better choice of font. I'm thinking something like Source Sans Pro or PT Sans.

Should I pick up a book or just Google search some guides up? Been meaning to get into Python for quite a while now, anyway. And I know the feeling of starting up a lot of things and never finishing them. But I've made a good habit of ending things I swear I'll finish for the sake of my younger self, so I doubt I'll give up once I make progress. Yeah, that sounds chuuni as hell, I know.

Maybe you can use it. I dunno, I tried, but I have the annoying habit of, each time I learn a new trick, to play with it ad nauseam and forget the rest. So I know a bunch of barely useful crap (like how to make an interactive map for Renpy) but I can't use variables.
