Daiyousei was hot. That damn red-haired devil had managed to bite her earlier in the day, and ever since, she had been burning up. It was quite a shock in the first place to see the Little Devil not only outside the SDM, but on her own.

Daiyousei thought she was being helpful, maybe the devil just wandered outside and got lost. But as soon as she got close to her, it reached out, bit her arm, and then flew away. That SDM, always causing trouble.

Good lord was it hot. She had had enough. She took off her clothing and went into the lake, maybe that will cool her off.

For the most part, faeries have very primitive thought processes. Their brains are locked on a constant cycle of "Eat-sleep-reproduce", with the occasional interjection of "Defend yourself". This mirrors most conventional animals.

Then there are those lucky few who are capable of higher, almost human-like thought. While it seems preposterous-almost ridiculous-that a dull-witted creature like Cirno can be capable of anything resembling "normal" cognitive expression, one must remember that the same "dull-witted creature" can create art, a skill not found in typical faerie societies. Granted, this art consists of frogs encased in ice, but that is neither here nor there.

Today, the faerie known as Daiyousei was experiencing a higher thought. This concept, at first glance, is thought to be quite primal in nature. The reality, however, is that it takes a lot of guts and a surprisingly large amount of brainpower to decide that it is time to run for one's life. Especially if one is running from a dear friend.

As she tore through the bushes and branches of the Forest of Magic, Daiyousei contemplated what she had just witnessed.

She was looking for Cirno, she remembered. They had a full day planned: freezing frogs down by the lake, throwing them at people, and repeating the process until the sun went down or someone killed them, whichever came first. When she came across Cirno, however, she was stooping over the body of the fay known as Lily White. "Hey, Cirno!" she had yelled. Cirno turned to face her, and Daiyousei knew instantly that something was very wrong with her friend.

Cirno's face and clothes were smeared with blood. Her hair was messy and dirty. A large lump of gristle was hanging out of her mouth. Lily's vivisected corpse laid behind her, staring at the sky, her typical jovial smile replaced with a look of abject horror. But, most terrifying of all, Cirno's eyes were bright red, as if blood had pooled and coagulated in the whites.

There was a moment in which the two looked at each other. Then Cirno rushed Daiyousei. Daiyousei ran into the forest, screaming.

They chased each other for a while. Eventually, Daiyousei ran out of stamina and collapsed against a tree. Cirno approached the fallen faerie, growling like a feral beast. Daiyousei attempted to appeal to the faerie's sense of mercy: "No...Cirno...please...it's Daiyousei! Remember?" By this time, Daiyousei was sobbing. Mercy, apparently, was not known to the ice faerie, as Cirno drew ever closer. Daiyousei looked up into Cirno's eyes. Cirno grabbed a clump of Daiyousei's hair. Daiyousei continued pleading with her. "Please, no...don't...I'm your friend-" The last thing the faerie felt was Cirno's sharp teeth ripping into her neck, stifling her last screams of pain.

Hours passed. In the gloom of the forest laid the body of Daiyousei. Cirno had spared her. Apparently, she had eaten her fill of Lily White and, having no further desire to feed off of her former friend, moved on.

Daiyousei's corpse rose from the ground. A large hunk of flesh was missing from her neck. Her face showed no emotion.

But, most terrifying of all, Daiyousei's eyes were bright red, as if blood had pooled and coagulated in the whites.

Cirno had fulfilled her needs. In doing so, she created another creature like her: a creature that knows no pain, no fear, with boundless stamina, and an insatiable, primal desire to do just one thing:

Feed.

Over the next few weeks, Cirno and Daiyousei would create more of them. Soon tens of faeries would be afflicted, then hundreds, and then thousands, and soon almost every faerie in Gensoyko was infected. As most of the faeries who were attacked didn't die, the natural automatic reproduction process common to all species of faeries was not engaged. They ran out of faeries to feed upon.

They began to attack humans...

She waited for the inevitable. They planned to sacrifice her, just like they did the fairies before her. All she had on was a simple black cloak like the others before her. Her beautiful wings had been plucked already, the only option for escape was to run, but there were too many of them. Escape, such a wonderful dream, but all too impossible. She wanted to cry so badly, but the pain was too much for her to even do that. She thought of happier days, before the Great Fairy Purge.
