To everyone who wants to play The Idolm@ster but never could on their American/non-Japanese consoles. How to play The Idolm@ster without importing a Japanese Xbox 360 :
1. Get the infectus mod chip

4. Play your imported copy of The Idolmaster. (If you want to download even that, look around and it's not too hard once you've changed regions.)

It looks pretty specific to me in changing the region code, and leaving everything else untouched. It isn't changing anything else in the system, just the byte code which sets the region. The files you changed are grabbed from the Xbox, so it should look to the online system like you have an unmodded Xbox, the only thing that should have changed is the region code.

I've read that one big reason the 360 is beating the PS3 in Japan, is that many Japanese game publishers are boycotting the PS3 for its lack of a region lock. Stupid or not, the game publishers insist on it (which is why it's not only still around, but gets exponentially harder to circumvent with each console generation)

Publishers want the lock because (especially for games like fighting and racing) people could import them before their own localization is available, and the company would lose money on the localization. Although it sucks to have to wait, especially when you know the language the game was originally made in, at least you would eventually get one in those cases.

The worst part of it is that games like The iDOLM@STER which are entrenched in the culture of the place they were made in and are never going to come out in another region. It's not protecting their non-existent localization.

No, they want the lock to be able to sell their products in regions where people can't spend as much on these kind of products as in America, or Europe, or Japan.
