Ran regularly visits the human village. She is perfectly fine with humans.
Yukari would probably be just like her. Maybe a few humans died after Yukari hugged them, fell asleep for a few months, and they couldnt escape her iron grip. But she still isnt evil.

I for one have no problem dying next to her as she sleeps and holds me like a child holding a stuffed animal. Maybe this would even become my job, as Ran would occasionally bring me scraps of food, enough to sustain my passive life.

In fact, most high level Youkai with a lot of spiritual power (Oni, Tengu) most likely do not need to eat people to get their spiritual powers. Tengu are so spirituals that a lot of them are hermits and some of them are worshipped as gods.

Judging by the overmounting evidence of people misinterpreting the line, I'm in the "completely mistranslated" camp. A good translation does not just get an arbitrary percentage of words and grammar correctly, it also implies that same thing as the original.

And no, "coming from somewhere" is not an acceptable proposition by any stretch. It's not in the original wording, it goes contrary to the context of the conversation (youkai being transplanted to the outside world), it even completely disregards the question what kind of food is being spoken of (it's belief in supernatural for all we know; after all, zashiki-warashi were sent outside because they were getting popular, not because there was a discount on meat in Family Mart).

Of couse much of the blame for the misunderstanding is on people like you who will just assume human meat on the smallest hint. But the mistranslation really didn't help.

Like I said though, the overall point is that not all youkai can be sustained from inside Gensokyo alone, as you agree. It doesn't strictly suggest "food is sent in from the outside" nor "youkai go outside for food", so what I said from the beginning is that the issue with the translation is the focus of the wording suggests too much of the former. "The youkai's stomachs are filled from somewhere" also fits the youkai leaving Gensokyo fine, by the way; it's the "Gensokyo is getting enough food" part that was more suggestive. It's already established that some youkai eat humans from the outside anyways, so it isn't even that people are pointing to it as new information.

I'm still going to point back to your assertion that "the pages were completely mistranslated" when you seemingly only take issue with one line that isn't even about anything strange. The reason the guy didn't understand what Yukari meant by "chance" was because he didn't have the rest of the chapter explaining what the chance for the zashiki-warashi was; not because of whatever about food sources.

Again, my poor wording. I don't mean to say she "is" a hungry ghost, because Touhou hasn't established that as a solid concept, really. But she evokes the imagery of a hungry ghost, and IN was only the beginning. It pops up in nearly every work after IN she's in. More than that, the awful circumstances of her death match those of a hungry ghost, and the Buddhist imagery surrounding her supports this as well. The term 餓鬼 is even used in reference to Yuyuko (by Sakuya), so it's a mindful connection. Again, it's more of a soft layer of characteristics, but she's obviously meant to be this way.

Also, just a slight nuance, but her corpse being sealed is what prevents her from having a proper burial service, which then keeps her as a ghost. This seems to make Yuyuko unusual among ghosts.

Even that phrasing is too specific. It might suggest that some youkai specifically cannot be sustained by Gensokyo. The original groups them all together (and not just Gensokyo youkai, all youkai period). All the more reason to interpret the line as "If all youkai are in Gensokyo, we're having a supply problem (so it's best to settle some of them elsewhere like what I'm doing right now)".

And yes, I am only taking issue with that line. That was some other anon with more general complaints. (Note that "not taking issue" is not meant to say "I think they're fine". It's "I hold no opinion, they never caused problems, so I had no reason to examine them closely".)
