Worst route/chapter of your favorite VN?

>> No.13562242

Phantom of Inferno, Mio route.

It has a better and more drawn out final fight, but the ending is just a bit too perfect and Zwei has too little time with Mio for their romance to be convincing.

>> No.13562320

Looking Glass Insects in Subahibi. Dragged on for far too long and it was really hard to feel any sympathy for Zakuro since she was being so retarded about the whole thing. The ending was cool, though.

The final one.

>> No.13563159

>>13563020
I disliked both.
Rena's arc fucked up with the ending "and then they just had fun making sparks with a meat cleaaver and a bat".

But the final arc was bad because
>Forced sympathy for the villain
>kids defeating a pmc
>Mion beating Okonogi in hand to hand combat
I wanted a happy ending, but I disliked how Higurashi ended. I actually think Minagoroshi-hen was a pretty good ending. I hated it becaus my waifu was murdered, but it wrapped things up well, if on a sad/infuriating note.

Favourite end was Watanagashi-Hen. Favourte chapter was either Tatarigoroshi or Onikakushi.

>> No.13563298

>>13563159
>forced sympathy for the villain
Agreed. Was it really necessary to thrown in the bad childhood cliche? I liked Takano for being mysterious and a manipulative bitch. She didn't need a Freudian Excuse.
>kids defeating pmc
Don't get me started on this. It's the biggest let down in the entire series. I get it that they are super badass kids and everything but defeating an elite group like Yamainu with Home Alone tier traps and tactics...nah, just made me cringe.
>Mion beating Okonogi
Wow, did it really happen? It's been a while since I read the VN but holy shit...I only remembered Akasaka beating the crap out of him.

It's a shame miotsukushi-hen isn't translated, from its summary it's 10 times better matsuribayashi-hen- Or at least they could have made an OVA. We get shit like Kira animated but not the ps2/ps3/ds arcs. Seriously?

Tatarigoroshi-hen > Onikakushi-hen > Meakashi-hen > Tsumihoroboshi-hen > Watanagashi-hen > Himatsubushi-hen > Minagoroshi-hen > shit > Matsuribayashi-hen
is my list. Overall, Tatarigoroshi is what I think truly captures the essence of the series. Such a hopeless, dark chapter. Nothing tops it.

>> No.13564241

>>13563298
I dint care about it being dark and hopeless. I just love stuff where reality is blurred, and you cant seperate fact and fiction. Lots of people praise HP Lovecraft for his horror, but my favourite story of his is Polaris, and it's not a story with his "unspeakable horrors", just a guy who cant tell what's real and what isnt. That scares me much more, and thats what I loved about Higurashi until I got the answers.

Anyway, yeah Mion beat him. At the end he catches up with them and explains how Takano would be killed eventually, and he fights Mion giving her tips, despite her kicking his ass. It's just beyond dumb a teenage girl who stocks a few shelves, can compete with a trained killer who is a grown up man.
I get Satoko's stuff was foreshadowed, but it was still totally out of place. Her stuff was just pranksterish, and more comedic. It being used seriously went against the tone Higurashi had set. It doesnt have to be all grimdark, but when you have a mafia family, and Oyashiro sama worshipers, you have a bunch of other options.

I liked it when they were hiding in the torture chamber, but it went downhill after that. (After it climbed out of the pit, that was the attempt at making the villain sypathetic)

>It's a shame miotsukushi-hen isn't translated, from its summary it's 10 times better matsuribayashi-hen-
If you are looking for a more realistic version, it's not happening.

The villain is still going to redeem herself and we have fucking Hanyuu helping Keiichi and Rika dodging bullets like the Matrix.

>> No.13565061

I liked the very ending and Bern's mystery, but yeah everything else was really bad and I liked Chiru

>> No.13569809

>>13564914
Yeah, but at least Hanyuu dies right? That alone makes me want to read the whole thing.
*sigh* Why can't R07 write good endings? His works would be pretty good if he didn't fuck up the last parts of the story.

>>13565061
Bern's mystery was too predictable though....

>> No.13569835

>>13563298
>Agreed. Was it really necessary to thrown in the bad childhood cliche? I liked Takano for being mysterious and a manipulative bitch. She didn't need a Freudian Excuse.

i usually hate that cliche but i think it worked pretty well for higurashi, just as that "here's rika trapped for a zillion years doing the same shit, the reason she can't break out is because her resolve is nowhere near as strong as takano's," it didn't sound as cheesy as it usually does to me, anyway.

Katawa Shoujo, Hanako route.

>>13571887
I think you could add Rosa to that list too.

>>13571885
I think I wouldn't dislike them this much if they were the main characters to begin with. But having Keiichi as a protagonist was just way better imo. The bar was set too high.

>> No.13571914

>>13571911
What I like with Keiichi is that he's directly responsable for what happened in his childhood, and yet he's not angsty over it. Until it's rubbed in his face.

And you could probably add Maria too.

>> No.13571937

>>13571914
That's why Keiichi says " All mistakes should be forgiven ". He knows from experience that everyone can do bad things and make mistakes under certain circumstances. What I like about R07 is that he writes his protagonists like they are totally normal, cliche protags but when you dig deeper into story you realize they are very complex characters. Battler is the other example ofc.

>And you could probably add Maria too
If you really think about it, most of the characters had shit childhood in Umineko. Everyone had their share of anxieties and problems.

>> No.13571944

>>13571937
Battler was a personal favourite during episode 1. He stays calm, is pretty funny, and is flawed enough to feel realistic.
And then episode 2 arrives and he turns into your average video game character that is so dumb he falls into every trap and has to be explained everything.

>> No.13571973

The thing that pissed me off the most about him was his " It wasn't the witch! But it wasn't one of us either! " mentality. I mean seriously? I get it they are your family and all but make up your mind already. And then came episode 6....where he turns into Kinzo 2.0.

At least with the very first arc. I expected cute girls, I got punched in the face.

After that, I dunno if it's because I expected it or not, but I feel like the following arcs had less punch to them.

And then Umineko arrived, and it was awful.

Higurashi Question Arcs were pretty good, but then came Kai and it just felt flat compared to the previous arcs. Also, the ending sucked big time.

Umineko ep 1 was bait, I enjoyed it way too much and expected the other episodes to be like this too. Still, ep 3 and 5 managed to entertain me, but after that it really went downhill.

>> No.13584020

>>13584002
Yeah, the first episode was good. You actually saw how the main character looked like, there was real mystery, and the fact that almost everyone was family gave a special feeling. It wasn't just a bunch of random strangers on an island, it was a family meeting going wrong, and I liked that.

Dunno about Higurashi's ending, though, since there's apparently a good one where everyone lives, and a dark and edgy one wher Hanyu dies.
