There's good and bad in every fanbase, so I tend to just try to carve out my own niche with people that are more relaxed and open about stuff.

Anytime interaction between fans leads to you feeling sour towards the material you are trying to enjoy, that means it's time to find someone else to talk to about it.

It's just not really that good. And then a crappy deen adaptation came out, which drew some people in. Then once the ufotable one came out, everybody hopped onto it just because they didn't actually read the VN, but just heard that it's a lot better than the deen adaptation, which isn't saying much. So now we just have a mediocre VN with an adaptation with cool visuals and a bunch of random people overyhyping the series.

The western fanbase is trash yeah. A bunch of retards calling each other "secondaries" when they play the VN in fantranslation tier English and haven't even read the source materials, in the source language nor ever touched the /zero novels.

And they go around calling each other names to feel superior when they're just plebs all the fucking same.

>> No.13405905

It's okay, but I prefer the older Type-Moon stuff for a lot of reasons.

Of course, like basically everything with a significant Western following, it has a really insufferable fanbase. I like to occasionally have decent discussions about things I enjoy and a fanbase like the Fate fanbase makes that nearly impossible.

>>13403215
>a bunch of random people overyhyping the series.
I guess that's what happens when something that's somewhat better/fresher than the usual popular shit gets publicity. Someone who's eaten shit all their life will call stale bread a feast of the gods.

Content (and fans) was chuuni as hell but back then it was a bit more novel.

FSN has always been a gateway VN and the fanbase reflects that now more than ever, especially irksome are the ones who go around calling others secondaries like reading a moderately long VN that has been fully translated for over half a decade is some kind of accomplishment.

That and the sheer number of them too, granted the accessibility of FSN being an early title to get translated made it popular to begin with, but the anime adaptations of FZ and now UBW has only exacerbated the issue.

Last is just how far Type-Moon intends to let the franchise be milked dry. Unlimited codes wasn't a big deal since Tsukihime had melty blood. But then came Apocrypha, and Extra, and CCC. Pile that on with the UFOtable adaptations, release of Fate on smartphones, Carinval phantasm, Prisma Ilya and it's anime adaptations, fucking DNF Avatar events for Fate zero, and now grand order where I took a single look at the new Sabre and wanted to vomit.

I don't give a shit about Fate, but if I were a fan I feel like I'd be pretty happy that TYPE-MOON continues to churn out stuff for the franchise.

There's a lot of stuff out there I like that nobody has touched in years despite the fact that there's still more room to explore, where I'd be overjoyed if the creators went back to milk them some more.

>> No.13406119

It wasn't a great VN to begin with, they've been milking it for over a decade now and I'm sick of hearing about it, and the fanbase is obnoxious. That pretty well covers it.

Go read Masada's works or Demonbane or something. They do the chuuni thing way better.

I think what it comes down to is that in a lot of places, it's all a them vs. us bout of identity politics. It's primaries vs. secondaries. It's Rinfags vs Sakurafags vs Saberfags.

After a while it feels almost like the actual series, the source material or the adaptations, are secondary to showing up those other fans, the ones who aren't as good as you are.

>> No.13407359

Too many secondaries.

>> No.13408219

>>13406577
>Is this something that happens on /a/ or something? I've never seen complaints about "secondaries" in TM discussions.
Largely. I guess the running assumption on /jp/ and BL is that you're extensively familiar with the source material if you're talking about it/an adaptation of it, whereas on /a/ and other communities you're inevitably going to have loads of people being retards having not read the source material, fan translation notwithstanding.

Of course, the people who treat having read the VN as a massive accomplishment (and not just the default expected behavior) are also insufferable idiots way too wrapped up in identity politics like >>13407197 said.

>>13407197
That's really true. I think that effect is at least partly a product of one of the consequences of nonstop discussion of something for a huge amount of time. You run out of things to talk about so all that's left is waifu wars and shitposting, both of which play off of identity politics. It's definitely happened with other popular and widely-discussed franchises like Eva, which has been Reifags vs Asukafags since nearly the very beginning.

That effect is one of the reasons I like discussing obscure things with small communities. It's not just hipsterism, it's trying to avoid all the bullshit that comes with something being too popular.

>> No.13409217

>>13408219
>It's not just hipsterism
But it is partially, right?

In all seriousness, I understand. I like a number of popular series that I've learned to just not discuss with most people. Once a community gets large enough, it divides itself and suddenly you're not just a fan, you're a subdivision of a fan, and someone probably will hate you for it. Better to just avoid the whole damn thing. But it's important to not let that get in the way of enjoying the actual work.

>> No.13409692

>>13409217
>But it's important to not let that get in the way of enjoying the actual work.
Right. I try not to let it, but I definitely think that some works really benefit from discussion. Type-Moon properties fall into that category because even if you're an attentive reader there will be things that you'll miss, both as a product of the writing/presentation style and the sheer volume of material, both actual works and supplemental stuff like interviews. Picking up on information you missed or interpretations you didn't think of can make the media more enjoyable in retrospect and/or on future readings/watchings.

>>13409692
>because even if you're an attentive reader there will be things that you'll miss, both as a product of the writing/presentation style and the sheer volume of material, both actual works and supplemental stuff like interviews.
Actually, of all the things that starts shit in discussions, this is the thing I don't get most of all. I see people who get pissed because someone forgot a throwaway line from a filler scene of one route of a dense game. Or because it was said once off-hand in an interview with Nasu. I understand chastising and laughing at someone screaming "Shirou is Archer? Fucking spoiler alert, asshole." Someone like that has it coming. But people get upset when minor details are gotten wrong or misunderstood.

Or maybe that's just the nature of powerlevel bullshit.

That's part of it. Idiots looking for an excuse to act superior will be idiots.

Maybe that's another consequence of a fanbase that is by nature hostile and combative: the consequences (i.e. someone jumping down your throat for fucking up a detail/using your fuckup as evidence of the stupidity of Sakurafags or whatever) of being wrong or throwing out ideas or theories mean that discussion kind of stifled and a lot more paranoid.

I only started to play VNs a handful of years ago. KS was my first VN, and while largely a template VN, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it, and I got drawn in.

I had completed Ever17, Symphonic Rain, Yume Miru Kusuri and a few others before I even started FSN. And it completely blew me away, though not to the extent that the Ever17 narrative had.

I soon found myself purchasing and hacking my psp to play extra/ccc, downloaded a ps2 emulator to play unlimited codes, and waiting patiently for that /HA translation.

I never cared about Saber, Rin or Sakura. I didn't do it for them. I just wanted to see Archer project his swords.

Extra/ccc was like a dream, /HA wasn't worth the wait.

tl;dr I'm just in it for the swords.

Fate/Stay Night was my first ever VN (about six years ago now), and I read more mostly because it was so different than anything else I'd seen before. Since then, I've played other VNs, and a few months ago, I decided to read through FS/N again.

I couldn't make it through the prologue.

Just the horrid verbal diarrhea, and purple prose, combined with the whole "let's shove some barely-relevant worldbuilding in here, and hope it fits!"

tl;dr: I have fond memories of it, but it's horribly overwritten. Also, yes. The fans.
