The market and concept of idol image is changing. You could point out vast differences between every decade. I started following idols in late 90's (Morning Musume) and when I look at some of their old vids I chuckle at how archaic they are.

The 90s idols are also what introduced the concept to the majority of Western fans, and now we're going on to 2 decades from that. But unless those idols you speak of are self-produced indies then it's just the industry adapting to the times. If we take CDJapan statistics as any kind of indication the Western fans are quicker to pick up on the new trends, with Babymetal album being the 2014 top seller and outselling even the AKB machine.

The curious thing is, for Japanese women, it's hardly necessary to put their emotions in check in this case - because they understand what the deal is with geisha, this is all purely rational for them and makes perfect sense.

Wives have a role and geisha (or even fully fledged mistresses) have a role. They know this and know their position isn't threatened. The beauty is that the man works, gives his paycheck to the wife, and he gets an allowance.
She knows how much he spends on entertainment and if there's enough money, he can go visit tea houses four times a week, but if there isn't, well, unless he's going to dig into their 401K (in which case she should and would divorce the idiot), there's not going to be any partying.
The wife is very much in control of the household.

Certainly back in the day, this is what Japanese wives were. And still are, to a large extent: homemakers and mothers, that's it.

Apparently their top 3 artists last year were Southern All Stars, Masaharu Fukuyama, and Perfume but they've been under Amuse for 36, 26, and (I think) 10 years respectively. Babymetal is the driving force behind them expanding globally though. I'd assume Perfume as well yo a lesser extent but then again Perfume sold out a 4,000 capacity venue in L.A. in their first US show and also sold out the same NY venue BM didn't during the same month and pretty fast although BM's tix were more expensive.

Well she did mention even on this radio thing that she has difficulties with making the time. I don't really have illusions of them ever actually playing instruments live, Maybe something in a studio enviroment. Getting to that level of professionalism, to be able to nail a stage performance takes daily practice and maintaining that skill afterwards, much like sports people have to.

Yea, that's the thing. I'm sure she is too busy to keep at it regularly but being able to play No Rain, No Rainbow is really easy if she's been able to play those other songs when she was 13. But once again, that all depends on if she's been keeping up but she said she likes to collect guitar picks and does enjoy playing it so it's possible. You're comparing SG to typical idol groups. Once those groups have their girls graduate, that's it. They're done. Once SG girls graduate, their real careers start. SG is probably Amuse's least lucrative act, and it's not about churning out idols, it's set up like a real school to develop them for the entertainment industry whatever they wanna do. Look at Airi and Ayaka, they were planned to be models from the start and now they're already 2 of the biggest in Japan. Look at Ayami, they put her as a solo idol in a world of 500 member idol groups. Look at Perfume, the girls are pushing 30 and only getting bigger. Then look at BM where they also threw the graduation system out.

Amuse is not an idol agency, they have business in all types of things. Not every female has to be an idol and BM has a lower ceiling of popularity than her being a pop star.

I don't know much about idol groups but honestly they don't seem to exude talent at all, and they're all about being identical rather than standing out. Su has been noticed for her singing since she was a child the same way that all the biggest popstars in the west were.

As for Amuse I get it, they're more like Avex with a diverse roster, rather than idol-focused like HelloPro/UpFront. But that's their business model, they hold on to assets even losing money in the hope that they will once pay back. Same deal as with probably 80-90% of Avex artists being on life support from Hamasaki and a couple other big ones.

At this stage of course only a fool would get rid of Su, but was she really that notable as an SG member? Not questioning here, honestly asking. She really was, even in their first years while Amuse was -trying- to focus on the elder members about to graduate, Su was the only who could really carry a tune and had the most time in vocals, and for the album of the year of her graduation she basically got two solo songs.

The being said, if she had not gone through the training camp that is Sakura Gakuin and subsequently the phenomenon that is Babymetal, I think that maybe she would have lived in her sister's shadow and never really reach the fame that she has now. Either waste her talents being a regular idol or play for a few dozen people at indie cafés or whatever.

Like I said Airi and Ayaka are top models in Japan. Marina and Hinata are doing voice acting for anime. Raura and Yuika are doing a webshow. Everyone is doing something other than 2 girls who wanted to pursue other interests(modeling/nursing). Amuse is beyond the music industry. For example, they're opening up a One Piece theme park in Tokyo. They also just added an office in the US. They work differently from the idol machine. Southern All Stars for 36 years and Masaharu Fukuyama for 26 years. Perfume and One OK Rock for around 10. Amuse puts a long term investment in their talent the way record labels in the west do, it's no wonder they have multiple groups more popular in the west than most Japanese artists.

And yea, Su was always a stand out(it's why Koba specifically built BM around her) but I think Amuse was banking on Ayami being the biggest star. At least originally, but I think that had more to do with her charisma.

Completely agree, actually, I really like that Amuse cares about music first rather than image and i have no problems that BM was manufactured and supported by them. Remember that Amuse completely supported Perfume when things didn't looked promising for the group.

I've always thought that Su and Ayami are the two of the best singers that Amuse has this moment, they showed that in Karen's girls, SG and their projects in the present, but Su is a more versatile, emotional and powerful singer.

Let me put it in this way, if they switched places Su will be singing pop in the same level as Ayami does, but Ayami can't touch the power and the range that Su does in BM, that is a defining factor to me.

Don't get me wrong, Ayami has a sweet, calm and flawless voice that i really like but Su is the one who impresses me with her work in BM. after all one of the factors of BM success is Su's credibility as a female lead vocalist.

Yea, Ayami has a great idol personality and better yet, you can tell she cares a great deal about her music and it seems like she even has a bit creative control over it as well. In one of the SG outtakes videos they asked some of the girls how SG helped them or taught them something. Ayami said it made her love singing and that she would die if she can't sing one day.

Side note: Su's answer was that it made her appreciate dancing whereas she didn't care much for it before

You can tell Amuse is already strongly supporting Ayami from the get go and pouring in money into her brand giving her the tools to succeed.

I'm not one to be a fan of corporations but from what we do know, Amuse is golden in my book. I'm well aware of how expendable idols tend to be but I'm really glad these girls are under Amuse.

Amuse might even be responsible soon of popularizing Japanese music in America which would be monumental.
