It depends what series you're talking about. If you are referring to the Atelier games I'd say Totori is probably the best place to start, followed by Meruru and New Rorona. For Ar Tonelico start with AT1. The surge games are in the same world as AT, but if you play them separately for the love of God start with Ciel. Also Mana Khemia is great and under appreciated.

Just don't expect the other Atelier (at least Arland) games to be as good as Totori. They're still good, just not so good that you'll be playing all day every day.

A question to the rest of the thread: How do the non-Arland Atelier games stack up to the Arland games? I absolutely loved Totori (original), played it all day until I finished it, then restarted immediately and played it all day again until I finished it again. Then I played Meruru (original) and while I did play it a lot, it didn't feel quite as addicting as Totori, and after finishing it once I'd had enough. Now I'm playing Rorona (plus) and it just feels less interesting than the others; I go for a significant time without playing, and then when I play I only play for a short while.

Will I like Atelier Ayesha (and/or its plus version when it's released) as much as Totori or at least Meruru, or am I just going to play for a bit and then barely pick it up anymore, like Rorona? Are the pre-Arland titles worth trying for me?

>> No.12586613

>>12586611
Ah, while I'm asking obnoxious newbie questions, how's the combat balance in the other Atelier games? In Meruru and Rorona I felt that combat in random encounters simply didn't matter because enemies never dealt any significant damage (often just 1 damage even if it takes several hits to defeat them), and in boss battles they stopped mattering after a certain point because unless they could insta-kill a character you could just have them back at 100% before the enemy can attack again (and at a later point, even killing the character did nothing unless it was a complete party wipe). I loved the post-Totori battle system with the time cards, but it was such a waste that the battles themselves don't require any significant strategy whatsoever. Considering Rorona Plus is a 2014 title, does this mean this issue exists in all post-Totori Atelier games? How about pre-Arland games?

Ar nosurge and the idea of chaining got me thinking; if there is another entry in the series, will we be able to dive into the hero's cosmosphere/genometrics/whatever ?

Some of them like Croix and Delta goes through some serious shit in their games and it would be interesting to dive into a guy's head (not counting Shirotaka) for once.

On the other hand, idiots like Lyner and Aoto would probably be empty space. Please for the love of god, don't give us another hot-headed idiot protagonist next time.

Continue playing and diving into her genometrics really does change how you view Ion. This starts with Nelico's genometrics and continues from there at which point her development becomes a tour de force. I won't spoil anything but there are sides to Ion that you wouldn't expect out of her and you will likely feel differently about her.

She is idealistic but there are reasons for that. Yes, she starts as seemingly naive especially in Ciel but as you play and especially in her genometrics she has gotten over that and replaced it with something else.

Defeating all waves during a single encounter yields ~1900-2100 DP at the beginning of phase 2. I don't think you need any special approach. I just build up Burst until it's strong enough to kill remaining waves and release the song. If your team is too weak to reliably break enemies (which shouldn't happen), craft better cathodes and equip better crystals.

I haven't finished the game yet, but what do you guys honestly think, how likely is a continuation of the franchise?

3) Just a random thought of mine:

Ar nosurge is in someway connected to Earth
Ar tonelico takes place in the same universe as Ar nosurge
Therefore: Ar tonelico is connected to Earth~

I'd like to see a new game were those connections play a role... again:

People who're able to wield song magic visit Ion's home world~ or something like that.

But would EXA_PICO science apply to real world science? The 7D stuff applies, obviously, but I'm assuming wave theory doesn't work on "Earth" like it does in EXA_PICO.
That being said, I would like to see more connections between Earth and their universe in future games. I thought that Ar nosurge had a mostly solid ending with only a few loose ends though, so I personally feel like a game in the EXA_PICO universe is more likely than a continuation of the Surge Concerto.

It's a joke, you're not supposed to go for it and that's the reason it came out of nowhere. There are way too many similarities to AT1 to treat it seriously.
It's also the reason why I'm not going for 100% completion. Choosing the "hidden ending" is just impossible for me, only a complete monster would like it.

Are you talking about the terminal she built aka the machine I'm controlling? I don't know about that one...

To be honest I understood this specific screenshot differently,

I think she's talking about a machine she built while she was still on earth which led to her summoning to Ra Ciela...?

Or something like that.

Actually while I'm at it

What happened exactly at the end of Ciel Nosurge?

I understand they used Ra Ciel Fusor to create a window to Ar Ciel. And then they sent all the genom that came with them and some people to explore the surface which is why there are no genom around? But then Nero dragged herself and Ion to the future which drained the pulsar that Ra Ciel had become which closed the window? And this was before the Soriel locked onto the location so nobody knows where they're going?

I guess I'm just confused as to what Ra Ciel Fusor actually did and what happened to Ion between the end of Ion's memories and the end of Ciel Nosurge and how much time has passed. Like why the fuck is Delta still alive? They foreshadowed Cas becoming an incarnate so I can understand that but why is he still kicking about?

I have Ar Nosurge but I haven't played it much yet. Is this going to be explained? I just want to know what I SHOULD know and what's going to be explained later.

This is kind of spoilers but it is kind of explained closer to the end of Ar Nosurge. Renall realized the big fuck up that occurred at the end of Ciel Nosurge and was able to track Nero and Ion 5000 years into the future. Delta, Casty, Shirotaka, Renall, Sarly, Kanon, and Nay were going to be the Seven but never got approval by Kosal. The Seven are the only group capable enough to possibly create a new planet. If any of the Seven died during the 5000 year gap then the creation of a new planet would be impossible. So Casty, Delta, Shirotaka, Sarly and Renall were put to sleep for 5000 years except Renall and Shirotaka which were for 4990 years. Incarnation does not grant immortality nor notable long life, just stops an aging appearance. However being a Sharl does grant one with exceptionally long life. Nay really is 5000+ years old and Kanon was the core of the flask sea with Kosal until Zill extracted her to which she was also aware of Ion's time jump and went to sleep accordingly.

Well I do like the idea of her character, being a "goddess", "administrator", "artificial human" and "little girl"... all in one package.

And I honestly think that the name "Shurelia" is one of the best names I've ever heard.

Okay but now to some more in-depth discussions about Surge Concerto.

Yesterday I got the normal end and today I'll finish the true end, too, so I'm pretty much aware of the whole story, and I read the Ciel summary of course.

First of all,

can I consider Yuuki's story from Shirotaka's DLC as canon? Is this what she experienced during her school days?

>>12601693
>>12602714
>>12603700

It's pretty obvious that Ion isn't talking about the "terminal", because she was summoned to Ra Ciela long before she even started building it.

Which basically implies that - based on Yuuki's story in Shirotaka's DLC - Yuuki managed to get into that tech/space university and it was during her university days when she built "the machine" -
because our Surge Concerto Ion doesn't appear to be that much older than Yuuki was during her school days ... maybe 2 or 3 years have passed since the events shown in the DLC.

"The machine" was ultimately the reason why she was summoned to Ra Ciela, which means that she wasn't chosen randomly...

So what could this machine have been? And how did it manage to draw the attention of the people from Ra Ciela?

Which brings me to my next question.

Yuuki's DLC story seems to take place roughly in our time, so she was summoned to Ra Ciela from the year 20XX, Nelo on the other hand has been on Ra Ciela for over 5000 years at that point.

Which implies that the summoning works across dimensions, space and TIME, otherwise Nelo would have lived on earth thousands of years BC.

And I'm also wondering,

If, according to my previous speculation, Ion wasn't chosen randomly from all the citizens of earth, was there also a special reason why Nelo was chosen?

>>12606065

Why exactly did Nelo cause the time jump anyway? To prevent the people of Ra Ciela from migrating to the new planet?

And did she take the energy source with her (together Ion), or was it just depleted after the time jump?

And another detail I don't understand,

At what point in time did Nelo/Ion arrive in the future, and how long did Ion sleep in the tube producing Sharls?

And are the Seven the only "Ancients" who were put to sleep for 5000 years?

This exploration team was rather small and most of the genom decided to stay at Ra Ciela and "die" together with it. It is later revealed, however, that their souls are now part of the ship's energy source, just like the rest of the former planet. You'll learn during Ar no surge that there's a way to extract the individual genom souls from the energy source again... and place them into Sharl bodies.

Finnel was actually good and Cass is almost perfect. Saki was a horrible airheaded moeblob, Ion is an airheaded moeblob too, but much more likeable. Delta shares some similarities with Lyner, they took a clearly visible obsession away (Funbuns) and gave him some suffering instead. Aurica was fine, but they took different direction for future "broken girls". If I had to choose, Finnel was more interesting than Aurica, though. I think I've seen this question before. Now that I finished all games (well, almost -- I didn't complete phase 3 in ArNo), I'll describe my opinins:
AT1:
Aurica -- she'd be the worst before her character development, but I think she'd be okay after she dealt with her problems. She's caring and (mostly) kind, but I wouldn't let her cook or name her child. Both, especially the latter, may cause a mental trauma.
Misha -- probably the best, she's kind and understanding.
Shurelia -- no, just no. Not that I hate her, but I just can't imagine this. She was like a mother to Lyner and after he closed the distance between them, it turned into a crush. I don't think it'd play well.

AT2:
I think both Luca and Cloche would be okay. Mir lacks patience

AT3:
Saki -- probably the best, given her experience with kids in the elementary school. She's caring and patient. She's a huge airhead, but I get the impression that she wouldn't do anything stupid when she's taking care of children.
Finnel -- this one could be problematic. She's a kind girl, but she needs a lot of support. Most likely lacks experience too.
Tilia -- she's an enigma to me. I really don't know.

Ar Nosurge:
Cass -- she'd be great, but being a tsundere certainly isn't a good thing in this case. She could unintentionally undermine Delta's (she's Delta-sexual after all) authority. Trust me on this, my mother is kinda tsundere for my father and it didn't play well. Other than that, I see no problems.

Ion -- Saki 2.0, probably the best.

Do you like Visual Novel style games? Or choosing a "best girl"?

Do you enjoy crafting "crazy stuff"? (Well I guess that's a given if you like Atelier)

Do you like a sci-fi fantasy settings, especially with a lot of futuristic technology going on?

Do you like "post apocalyptic" / "A broken planet" settings, where most of humanity lost the means to really "understand" said technology?

Do you like fictional fantasy languages which you can actually... translate?

And most importantly, do you like Akiko Shikata's "ethereal" music?

The thing fascinating me the most about the AT series was the whole idea behind Song Magic:

Girls singing Songs (most of them in a fictional language) which are actually command lines to operate a gigantic "Song server" to cast magic!

Well I admit that it sounds pretty "over the top" but the concept really works.

And here, baby's first hymmnos songs:

One song from the very first game of the Ar tonelico game.

http://youtu.be/4PEmZdiFjwY

... And one song from the current generation "Ar nosurge"

http://youtu.be/nQGeEYqrNFU

(The music had also a lot of development going on over the years)

PS:

You mentioned that you're especially interested in AT2, which is arguably the best game of the franchise, but you should actually play the whole franchise... and in "normal" order, because it's actually one coherent story told through multiple games.

PPS:

I honestly think that liking the music plays an important role for becoming a fan of the franchise:

Personally I believe those games should be considered "space operas" in video game form instead of "mere JRPGs".

Music and setting.
I got interested in music, because I just couldn't ignore a beautiful artificial language that makes sense.

Back then I know nothing about the setting, but after researching a bit, I had a feeling of hitting the jackpot. Sci-fi, cute girls, forgotten tech, post-apocalypse, awesome music, hymmnos (the said language).

These series are just made of things I love.

>> No.12610622

>>12610366
For me it goes like this:
1) Music - main reason I fell in love in the Ar games, it's superb. Not only Hymmnos, true miracles kicking in during important event, but even normal "background" music is great. While I'm at audio aspects, the voice acting is really good too, even if some voiced lines in AT1 were a bit unpolished.

2) Setting and atmosphere -- the world in Ar games is dying, it's a really bad place to live, theoretically speaking. However, its carefully weaved environment, sometimes silly pseudoscientific explanations and unique languages (this stuff is really detailed) are truly charming. It's hard to describe without omitting important elements, so it's best to check it out yourself. I'd forget -- the Song Magic system is great.
3) Characters and interactions between them -- "best girl" wars sure are fun
4) Other aspects -- graphics aren't great, but the style is charming; 2D backgrounds are beautiful, though. Especially some rare 2D backgrounds in AT3 (e.g. "God's Valley" if memory serves right).

Play the games in the normal order: AT1->AT2->AT3->(if you know moon)Ciel Nosurge (summary if not) -> Ar Nosurge

Everyone loves AT2, but it's still my least favorite game in the series. It's still great, but I like the other games more. Probably that's because AT2 soundtrack/Hymmnos Concerts have less songs that really suit my taste and I didn't really like the girls. Protag was great, but his role was reduced to bare minimum in the latter part of the game, it was painful to watch too.

Are you talking about the games?

First of all I'd recommend playing the games in release order.

After playing the games read the translations of the hymmnos songs which were featured in the games; this adds a lot of depth to the music in my opinion.

When you're done with AT1-3 play Ciel nosurge... or read the detailed summary posted in the last thread.

After reading about all the events in Ciel nosurge... play Ar nosurge!

And after you've done all of this you'll be up to date with the rest of us.

You need Ar=Ciel Ar=Dor (the disc for this is fucking beautiful >>12609377)

You need Akiko Shikata's Raka, Harmonia and Laylania albums for the reiterations of the openings of AT1, 2 and Ciel (I want to say there's one for AT3? But I can't think of it off the top of my head)
There are CD dramas with songs in them but from what I've seen they're not exactly substantial. Someone feel free to correct me on this

Personally I would say that the limited editions of AT1 and 2 aren't all that worth it for $100+. At least not the ones that came to the US. The art books are tiny and the music discs don't have more than a few of the Hymmns.

ATQoga has a nicer hardback art book, but the soundtrack has the same issue as the previous 2 games: It's mostly just the non-vocal songs that are included.

I would say you're better off buying normal versions of all 3 games and taking that money you saved to get this art book: http://www.amazon.com/Tonelico-Visual-Book-Hirokazu-Hamamura/dp/192677826X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1413862096&sr=8-1&keywords=ar+tonelico+art+book

Otherwise I'd say the series as a whole is ~B rating. Nothing -too- special (the ecchi in Quoga was pointless and stupid IMO, the battle system was awful to boot, in general pacing can be a little awkward, like with Shurellia in AT1 and how crafting item chains can take ~40 minutes per store, especially with how cutcenes play out in Nosurge), but not horrible either (like that abomination of a game HDN was).

Google softmod ps2, you basically put a program on your memory card that lets you play copied/import/whatever games. However you need a way to put it on your memory card. When you search you'll see that there are a few methods.

Personally I used the Action Replay Max disc method, it was like $10 off amazon or something. Then I simply burned the Ar Tonelico 2 ISO on a disc and played it on my PS2.

>"The machine" was ultimately the reason why she was summoned to Ra Ciela, which means that she wasn't chosen randomly...
>So what could this machine have been? And how did it manage to draw the attention of the people from Ra Ciela?
You're simply assuming she wasn't chosen randomly. It's quite possible "the machine" simply created a weak point that made cross-dimensional access easier for the Ra Cielans, and Yuuki was only chosen because she was nearest to this weak point. As for what "the machine" is, I'd guess some sort of particle accelerator.

>Which implies that the summoning works across dimensions, space and TIME, otherwise Nelo would have lived on earth thousands of years BC.
Well, we know for a fact that time between dimensions doesn't line up in any way at all, as we can pause the Ar Nosurge OS on our end (either actually pausing or saving and loading) and leave for as long as we like and time will not pass, and likewise hours, days or even years can pass on the other end in seconds on ours.

Thought I'd ask this here: Was it a translation error at the end of Cass' Genometrics when she referred Prime/Pram as a female? I would understand that they were trying to say that Pram was secretly a reverse-trap but the ingame bio of Shirotaka clearly refers him as a boy, heck Prime was clearly referred as a boy in Shirotaka's Genometric.

Bullshit.

I'm sure you're familiar with the theory of alternate realities, that there are an infinite number of parralel realities to our own, some almost totally identical, some wildly different.

It stands to reason that with infinite possibilities, EXA_PICO does exist somewhere in there. And that means in those infinite EXA_PICOs, there exists an alternate reality to our own where Ionasal really exists and does in fact love you, and not an alternate reality you either.

Their objective? Fun. They're convinced that Interdimend is nothing but a game. Like how our Ar Nosurge terminal gave us the set goal of reviving Ra Ciela, their terminal must have had the goal set as "Send Nelo Home". Actually getting to be with Nelo was nothing more than, in their words, a "sweet bonus".

The more that I think about it actually, their goal may have simply been "prevent Ra Ciela's reincarnation", as they were continuing to fight you even when doing so made bringing Nelo back impossible.

And if anything, another motive they could have could now be just to beat us. They could simply be a massive tryhard.

Fuck it, I'll just come out with it. I want to reanimate the Ra Ciel Fusor cutscene to work with the full version of the song. I've already a rough outline of the sequence of events and next would be storyboarding and ironing out props.

I'm still just a student, currently taking classes on modeling and animation so I'm being completely crushed by my current workload but this is the first thing I've felt actually passionate for in a long, long time. It'll take ages and may never happen but I want to try at the very least.

As I am now, I could model the Singing Hill and Ion with little trouble. The real snag is the effects animation for Bezel, the imploding Ra Ciel and the quasar. What will stop me from being able to model the easy stuff is a lack of references. The only picture of Singing Hill that I can find shows very little of what's beneath the central ring. For the shot composition I'm thinking I might have to model a somewhat detailed version of the Soriel, it all depends on the form of Singing Hill. If it's connected and where it is.

>> No.12623276

I'm pretty sure the Singing Hill is its own space platform since it wasn't connected to the boss form of the Soreil ship in the final fight in Ar nosurge or at the end of Ciel nosurge where everybody on the Singing Hill had to transfer to the Soreil by space bus.
I can't really help you with getting references for the Singing Hill though but good luck with the project.

So I'm looking over my Krut_Hymneth folder and I find a subfolder called X_Ciel. It seems to have Ahih rei-yah, the song Kanon sang to destroy all the Cielnotron, and then some random songs from the OST, some cut weirdly.

What the hell is this supposed to be exactly?

I thought it was the true ending because it has Ion there for Ar Nosurge 2 if it eventually happens, and also it's the ending that doesn't end up with her leaving her entire life behind again for a second time. Also Nelo looking happy in the ending animation.

Also Prim survives in that ending too

Decided to block out and rig Ion's wings for the hell of it. Slapdash as shit but it gets the point across. It's just got shitty basic materials and it's missing some ornamental pieces which I was too lazy to add.

In the original video the wings are static which I think was a waste of potential. I see them as being more important when I have a go at it. Who else likes really heavy handed angel imagery? I know I do.

AT1 had the infamous Misha bug that halts your progression.

AT2 had the Raki glitch I've never encountered this, probally cuz I had the PAL version

Can't really think of any real gamebreaking bug AT3 had. Aside from some game freeze occurrence, there wasn't anything that would completely hinder your file. No, Saki cosmosphere isn't a bug. The trophy just wasn't clear about it. You're meant to get 100% in one playthrough, not just having it 100% on the extra. I've missed this on my first run.

I've heard stories about if you missed talking to Prime Minister during Phase 2, you'll lock your progression at some point in Phase 3, not too clear on this. I platinum'd the game and have yet run into any bug. I've had one freeze moment with one of Delta's attack but that's it.

A bad end for Ion? I wouldn't say so, sure she'd be upset at first, but she has all her friends by her side to look after her, and everyone there's living a happy life. Bring her back, and sure you get a CG for it, but if Ra Ciela pulls her back like you mentioned, its only worse for her in the end of being thrown back and forth between two lives, instead of settling in to one
