The good thing about Japanese idols not being Westerner-pandering sex symbols like chon "idols" is that they can get a normal life and a normal education after their graduation, since they're not only chosen for their looks, but also for their personalities and gimmicks. Some of the most popular members are the ones you'd have the hardest time imagining in a JAV.

Because J-pop, especially idol pop, focuses more on the members' personalities and on cultural values. That doesn't market well overseas, because of the language barrier being a much bigger issue when you suddenly include variety shows and documentaries, which are needed to showcase the personalities of each member. Because of the US overlooking Korean IP theft and anti-Japanese propaganda, the better to avoid memories of the Korean War coming up to haunt them again, the gooks are being allowed more media focus than the Japanese, and as such are free to spread their squealing simian racket on American media without any intervention.

Is K-POP actually popular though? Outside of Gangnam Style, which was mostly just laughing at the fat loser korean, I have never felt any korean impression. There's definitely a large community of korean-americans that love to push K-POP everywhere, but outside of that I don't feel like there's any popularity.

Maybe it's different in Asia where K-POP mostly tries to market to?

Japan is also the largest music market in the world, so groups don't need to advertise outside to make money. Look at how popular Momoiro Clover Z are in Japan, and stardust has absolutely zero presence outside of Japan.

I don't know about other countries, but I know when I visited Malaysia and Singapore, K-Pop was very popular there. Heck, I turned on Malaysian tv and the first thing that popped up was a Korean drama, one that looked to be several years old judging by the flip phones they were using.

Mayu's Performance in Nerawareta Gakuen was alright. Not professional level, but she has seiyuu potential.

If you mean Bigpapa, it's been almost a year and it's actually some talent agency, which I believe hasn't done much since its establishment apart from holding some PR events and releasing a few image DVDs (nothing lewd, I apromise). Regardless, this is neither the first nor probably the last time that someone (especially a minor member) "downgrades" to a smaller agency, so to speak.
I, for one, will never understand all those members who decided to graduate and legitimately become a seiyuu, because compared to AKB and other mainstream idol groups it's such a HUGE stepdown. It's like they don't even realize that by joining one of those lousy voice acting "schools" they're voluntarily limiting their capabilities to acting in some shitty late night anime, forever. Not to mention that their "training" fees make most of those agencies nothing but money-collecting scams giving nothing in return.
Shawako gets my pardon because it's still leagues better than being under the current SKE management, but Nakayan got on my shit list pretty fast after a couple of her reckless tweets.
I guess that for some it's still a dream, but is it worth forfeiting mainstream exposure and a contract with influent talent agencies in exchange for a job so irrelevant and thankless? Pfeh.
