Something I've always wondered about the Yen. Why does £1 = ¥170, $1 = ¥102, etc? Why is the Yen number so high? Was there a point where Japanese citizens had ¥1 coins or notes before the number shot up?

In this pic for example, there are ¥1000 and ¥5000 notes. Meanwhile, here in the UK, the highest number paper note in circulation is the £50 note. What made the Yen shoot up?

theres dollars and cents theres pounds and pence
in japan theres only yen
imagine 5,000 yen being 5,000p
its not like the economy is that different or anything
the only problem is you are only comparing yen to pounds and dollars rather than pence and cents

Exchange rates fluctuate under our current system of money-changing. Sometimes they're inflated on purpose, sometimes by economic bad news or sanctions or whatever. Remember "lira" in italy? There's another 1000=$1buck thing, at least until they retired it in favor of the Euro.
