But that will cut off part of the black line too.

Ideally you would do it like this (not so hard):
- Expand the selection by 1 or 2 or more pixels as needed.
- Copy to a new layer.
- Fill inside of character with black, everything else with white. This will make the basis of a layer mask.
- Use a level tool on the layer mask to match the background to 100% white and the insides to 100% black.
- In the image (not the mask), fill all of the background with black, including the edges you selected.
- Apply layer mask as transparency to image.

And then you have an image without having any of the black border get cut off and without having any white stuff left.
