When I first played the first game I thought it was terrible but recently I went back and tried again and somehow most of the issues seem to have fixed themselves in some magical way.

I don't know what there is to say. It's the first game (with a number of story and setting changes to tie in with the other games), but now packaged with the battle system of V.

Quick rundown is you have your HP, and SP. No more AP for attacks like HDN and mk2. When it's a characters turn you get 4 attacks (Standard, followed by three Rush, Power or Gaurd Break attacks) plus an EXE drive attack if the gauge is full.

It works well and is a cleaned up version of the one in Victory which was already pretty solid.

Idea Factory, and by extension Compile Heart, does not make good games. Ever.
Victory, the third installment of the HDN series, was mediocre at best. Repetitive, but playable.
If you're looking for the artist, her name is Tsunako. She draws lolis for a living, and does a damn fine job at that.
