I take it you mean real bonsai trees, not "bonsai" potted cactus?

Every shop that sells household junk to the university students, seems like. Makes sense, I guess, since the things don't really take any effort to take care of, unlike the real bonsai trees which obviously need skilled pruning etc.

My mom wants to grow a bonsai tree. When I told her it takes a lot of maintenance she didn't really believe me. She barely takes care of her cacti and she also bought an orchid at some point and was surprised that it died.

I love potted cacti. I started collecting them when I was in highschool and have maybe 20 at various places in my apartment right now. I really like the ones that have long, fierce needles and that look like they want to kill you.

I've sorta wanted to start carrying for a bonsai tree, but I don't know where to start. Does /jp/ have any good reading material on them and their care, or any advice?

grim dude. I'm partial to the short ones that tend to be covered in shorter and less fearsome spines. I think they make really cool patterns.

I got my mother a $300 dollar bonsai tree for her birthday.

She took great care of it, then when summer came around she put it outside.

She'd read somewhere that was a good idea, and it can be apparently, if the tree is given time to acclimate.

The guy who grew the tree told me that it shouldn't have been left out for any longer than 10 minutes the first day it was outside, and from there my mother should have slowly increased the time to an hour, and then several hours.

She left it out for several hours from the start, and the tree fried. Then she probably over-watered it, damaging its roots.

I returned the tree to the guy who made it. He's had it for weeks now, and although he tells me that the tree is still clinging to life it hasn't been making any progress.

tl;dr don't put your fucking bonsai trees outdoors, and don't over-water them

bonsai4me and this page
http://www.evergreengardenworks.com/bonsaip.htm
are a great place to start, I'm told.

Most bonsai must be outdoor - they will never grow properly without sunlight and fresh air, despite their size. There are indoor bonsai but they're no fun

Bonsai trees remind me of the movie Karate Kid, it brings back nice memories. Do you have to constantly trim bonsai in order for it to thrive properly, or is it just for aesthetics?

It makes me wonder how Yuuka would tend to bonsai, maybe she wouldn't want to clip the branches because it seems cruel.
