On the 1.8 front, Emerald has been renamed "Touhoumon Purple". Now has contests among other changes. Also a neat new color pallet.

Up and coming hacks. Hemo's new game, "Touhou Puppet Dance Performance" is set to have a trial released at C86, with the full game being released at C87. The in-development hack "Unnamed 1.8 Hack" is worth checking out. Only goes to Koga but the puppet variety is ridiculous; should replace Enhanced as the go-to FR hack when it is finished.

MVP probably goes to Attack Marisa, surprisingly. Nasty plot and blast burn are scary. After that Defense Yukari with calm mind was great, and Koishi was solid. Aki Sisters weren't as fantastic as I was expecting, but still good. Attack Hina and Mystia were situational, especially the latter, which is why she's covering her face with confetti out of shame.

As a rule, shard evolutions will always change the role of the evolving puppet. If it's a fast physical attacker, an attack shard will probably make a fast special attacker. Probably. If you want your puppet to keep doing what it does, let it evolve naturally.

If you're playing Emerald, http://thpp.supersanctuary.net/wiki/Main_Page is all you really need. If you're playing another hack, and it doesn't have documented puppet stats, it is generally considered shit and not worth playing (because if the author cannot be bothered to waste some time on documentation, why would you waste time on his game?)

You could, of course, still open the ROM with a tool such as YAPE and look up the stats yourself. The hacks based on RPG Maker are a whole different story, naturally, but paragraph 1 still applies.

Fire Red hacks don't have such a limit, but the number of available puppets generally hovers around that number anyways. New puppets have been added as of late to correspond to the knew characters, but there's only one hack I know of that has implemented them.

I THINK new types are feasable. But expanding the dex is a world of hurt, apparently someone did this but didn't let anyone else use their patch so why bother? Also there's a few additional spots to use for new Touhous beyond 386 but they have certain limitations and it's why CKasen has to be obtained through a trade.

Basically if the new girls get added then it'll likely be at the expense of alternate evolutions for existing girls.

Not really, you can generally find a few support, defense, and tech shards earlier. Attack and Solar do come later, though, depending on the hack. If I want a form and don't have the necessary shard I'll temporarily bench the puppet a level before the new form learns a move I want. The resulting level difference is rarely significant.

Support and defense shards aren't so black and white. Take HEirin and DKaguya, for instance. They're pretty much bulky attackers. Many defense and support puppets have "good enough" attack anyways. HStar would be an example here. 80 is ok and nasty plot makes it great. Sure there are extremes such as DParsee which pretty much has to use toxic to do damage, but helper and defense puppets are far from useless in game.

As for your original point, it depends on how you're playing the game I think. OP's team clearly required some out of the way training, but I don't think such an approach is mandatory if you want to use slide evolutions

Actually now that i look at it the new changes in emerald, er, purple, make it so you can buy shards as early as verdanturf. The latest ones are attack, solar, and chrome, which you can purchase in Lillycove.

It usually depends on how you want to use a certain Touhou. For example, if she has high def stats, but you absolutely want to use her as an attacker, the one of the A/S/T lines will usually do just that. For example, I love Yamane for her typing and her sexy looks, but her regular evolution is more tanky. So, hand her a speed shard, and she turns into quite the deadly earth/poison type attacker.

This pretty much allows you to only use your favorite 2hu and still produce an overall balanced team in terms of offensive/defensive capabilities.

Granted that you can find the shards you need at the time you need them, of course.

In Purple, Kasen and CKasen are in slots beyond #386, and those don't have valid Touhoudex data. Spent the day EV training the right way on some touhous I may consider keeping. Note these 2hu are also the correct natures for their classes which buffs them even more, the symbols I mark on the 2hous represent the moves I am considering keeping, if there is a mark un-marked, then there are moves marked for replacing. This was such a bitch to do for some I may not even keep.

She has stab hyper voice, so anything weak to dream generally melted. Based on my (limited) in-game experience though she lacks the power to finish off anything else, and the survivability to take a hit when she fails to do so. It doesn't help that her other stab is air slash. But really her special movepool is very impressive; perhaps I was using the wrong combination.

Also it was inevitable that I would be comparing her to AMarisa, who has nasty plot and blast burn with 10 more sp attack, the same speed, and pretty much destroyed everything, so in that light I found her lacking.

Huh, well after reincorporating HKeine into my team Koga wasn't that bad. Granted getting a sp. def reduction on Yoshika helped. Also Raiko murdered Nue and HEirin. Looks like getting Layla for that quad miasma resist was unnecessary.

That's pretty much it for this hack right now though. The ridiculous puppet diversity, difficulty, and liberal use of shard evolutions by trainers makes it super fun. I'll be looking forward to the finished game.

The main difficulty comes from gym trainers/rivals having access to moves/Touhou/side evolutions that you don't have (mostly moves, though), plus generally being higher-level than you are. The difficulty gradually goes down towards the end of the game, as you get access to all Touhou (and thus all typings) and the more powerful moves you couldn't get earlier. Personally, I feel that the high point of difficulty is shortly before you get "Fly". After that, you can pretty much steamroll through things.

To those interested in why randomizers break with Emerald/Purple on some functions (i.e. randomizing trainers), there's two reasons:
1. Agastya fills in empty space with FF instead of 00, and all emerald randomizers only recognize 00 as empty space. Oops, overflows.
2. The trainer table offset is different, which can easily be fixed by changing the randomizer's internal config with the proper offsets (or external, if you're using older versions that have that)

I figured this out a while back when I was infuriated at the randomizer breaking every time I tried to use it that way, but after editing the rom and the randomizer to compensate for the above problems it worked perfectly. Since I don't feel like doing that again, someone should bug Agastya about that. Or bug the randomizer people to include support for FF empty space and easy offset editing in case the hacks change 'em.

as for text strings in the executable, i only currently care about getting menu/battle translation stuff done for now so word wrapping doesn't bother me at all. there's a few word wrap errors in move descriptions currently anyway.

i also have no idea how to go about editing text strings beyond using a hex editor, and i somewhat doubt that'd be a good idea on a large scale since i don't know how to actually repoint things in an executable, only in gba roms.

I made the starters different, mapped it 1-1 in every area, activated catch em all mode (I think?), randomized every wild, left overpowered attacks on, random items was left off, trainers have original touhous. Not to sure on rest though, I did randomize the seed several times though so it should be a good mix.

It's in just plain .txt files. Do you have a way to repack this stuff into another .arc file? Try editing /talk/500/50012.txt. This string appears here in my image. It's just outside the shrine at the start.

On the "save" folder, there's a file called "gn_enbu.sav". Delete it or move it somewhere else.

Some of the system text seems to be on "dat\common\message", some on "dat\script\talk\000", some in plain image format and I have no idea about the rest, but they should be in other .txt and .csv files.
