There was either a BBC or national Geographic documentary about the history of and science of dogs.

In Russia, what was once a fur farm is now a research facility where they have been selectively breeding foxes.

One group is bred with aggressive traits while another is bred with friendly traits. The friendly foxes actually wag their tail at the sight of humans and physically start adopting properties that are found in dogs.

Real answer is as always: get it out of the house as fast as you reasonably can.

If foxes and such could truly be domesticated, it would have happened a long-ass time ago and never gotten undone, save for feral colonies on islands like with cats.

They're being domesticated as we speak in Russia.
Pic related, a silver fox after several generations of breeding non-aggressive human-friendly foxes. They start to exhibit fur patterns similar to that of dogs and partake in activities such as tail-wagging and showing their belly to their human caretakers for rubs.

More domesticated foxes
I find the rapid domestication process they have used to be absolutely fascinating.

I think that it may be possible to domesticate any animal with enough effort and selective breeding.
Even humans.

Left is a wild fox, right is domesticated.
They domesticated foxes also start to have their tails curl upwards similar to some domesticated dog breeds.

Research shows that domestication entails the retention of juvenile traits, such as their submissiveness and splotted fur patterns.
So essentially they are breeding manchild foxes.

Yes I saw the earlier post. I'm not quite ready to bandwagon something recent wacky and preliminary. What those guys are doing might be valuable as insight into how modern dogs came about, but don't hype the existence of their project as a factoid or something. If it was gonna get done, it already would be.

You know the whole nekomata thing (a la Chen, and Japanese mythology about multiple-tailed critters in general)? Well cats often do grow with split tails or outright more than one tail, and there's actually been some concern from animal welfare folks that some unscrupulous fad breeder might start breeding this into his stock, just to sell novelty kittens.

>They're being domesticated as we speak in Russia.
This failed many years ago; domesticated foxes started abandoning their newborn offspring, so it's impossible to have them breed outside of research facilities. While theoretically doable, it's practically unfeasible.

>>12098320
I'd be perfectly ok with that.
Selective animal breeding and domestication absolutely fascinates me.
If in the future they manage to breed cats or foxes to have multiple tails and "mythological pets" becomes the new in thing, well I think that would be pretty neato.
And why stop there? With new discoveries in the domestication process and gene rearrangement, we could domesticate, miniaturize, and splice any animal we want.

But yeah, say if you want something to happen in a story, speculative/magic future science works like a charm setting it in place. Then again, things like that "Hinamizawa Syndrome" with spirits ans such work too.

The same is true of many domestic animals.

Miaowing for attention is a juvenile cat trait.

I don't know where you are all getting that foxes are friendly. A family friend of mine had a fox. It was a pup that got injured and spent a summer on their farm being taken care of. It grew to like the free food and attention so stayed, but they had to cage it a lot because it was a vicious killer of all their other animals (especially chickens and ducks). It bit the shit out of me several times while trying to 'play' with me. Any type of discpline would turn it into a shrieking hellcat and even the owners gave it free range in its caged area. they're fucking wild animals, not teddy bears.

Domestic foxes are ugly as fuck though their tails shrink aren't as fluffy and start to curl up like >>12098293 shows

If you can get a fairly tame 1st or 2nd gen domestication processed one that still keeps the deep red and fluffier tail go for it, if not don't wast your time

then again you "NEETs" couldn't afford one anyway so it's not a big deal
