So it turns out Reitaisei is on the 11th of May this year, the same day I arrive in Tokyo. I'm definitely thinking of going, because why not? It just seems there isn't much info on the net, but looks like you just turn up, buy the catalogue and have a look round?

Has anyone else gone before and want to share your experience? Is anyone going this year?

I just went to buy the catalog at my local Melon Books (not one of the biggest ones) and it was already sold out. Chances are it's the same in most places.
However you can simply buy it the day of the event. You can't really miss the selling place. If it's anything like last year, you will waste about 5 minutes getting it there, which is not a big deal unless you're lining up from 6 am.

As a firsttimer I don't really know how to act when buying stuff. I don't know much japanese and I don't really want to drag my travelbuddy around to buy all those h-doujins I want, since he doesn't really like lewd stuff. Will it be tough alone as non japanese speaking person?

Nah, it's really easy. If you look like a gaijin, they won't expect much from you so just make sure you look at the prices and have cash. When you get to the booth, just tell them how many or which ones you want. You can probably get by with holding up fingers but I recommend you learn your basic numbers and counters.

I went in 2012.
When I was there, it opened at 11 but we didn't end up getting in until 12 because of the massive lineups. I got there at about 10. They closed at 4. It was the same day ZUN got married, and they had an announcement about that and everyone clapped which was nice.

I don't like Touhou-H, so I completely avoided one side of the convention center. I found out a few days later, to my dismay, that was where the cosplayers, video games, and a variety of non-H stuff was. If you want exclusive figures, you will have to line up. A catalog (which doubles as your entry ticket) is about 2700 yen, from memory. I ended up with 3 because I purchased one in Hiroshima, one at the event as I had accidentally left mine at my hotel, and one for my mother to get in.

Be sure to bring alot of cash. No stalls have EFTPOS from memory, and you will want to buy some stuff. You will also get to meet some artists, so try and find out where your favorites are. I spoke to and purchased two albums from ARM.

Yes; if you can't speak Japanese it might be kind of awkward, but even then most people like to talk to their fans. It's considered rude to hold up a long line at a popular circle by talking/giving gifts/asking for sketches/etc., but at smaller places it is fine.

not that guy, but yes. It's called Space-A travel, and you have to be active duty or a dependant and have the proper clearance for international flights. It's free stateside, usually, but there's a small fee for international ones.

The only thing is, you arent told when the plane is leaving or to where until like two weeks (or usually less) in advance, and it's first come-first serve, with usually around 5-12 passengers.

The earlier you get there the faster you will get in. You will not get in before 11. I believe 6 or 7 was when people started lining up in 2012. Funnily enough, we took a train about 20 minutes in the wrong direction, and then had to spend 20 minutes going back then 10 minutes to Big Sight.

I don't know what the lining up rule for Comiket is, but here's what happened when I was at Reitaisai;

When we arrived, there were a bunch long, long lines. Probably 100 meters in length, but that's just off the top of my head. 2 people wide normally. You line up and will get asked to move around a bit. It helps if you speak a bit of Japanese, but it's easy enough to interpret if not - most Tokyo folk have a bit of English at their disposal. Then, they will start calling the lines in. Obviously, if you're closer to the building, and I believe in one of the lines on the RIGHT, you will get called in first, but don't quote me on the side. When you get in there, you will need to present your catalogue, or line up (can take a while) to buy yours. They were 2700 yen in 2012, from memory.

General Advice;
Check weather forecast, bring raincoat or umbrella if raining and hat if sunny
Bring a large bottle/several bottles of water. You will be outside in the sun for a long while if it's sunny, and it gets hot. There are vending machines but they're expensive. You will notice most of the Japanese wearing long pants, though.
Keep your money secure. I don't think any attendees would be inclined to steal anything, but I was approached by a guy asking if I had found his wallet. He looked quite distressed. Bring cash, because they don't have eftpos at the stalls.
Be prepared to carry alot home on the train. You can get a massive bag if you get some figures; I got 3 Griffon ones and they gave me a giant paper bag which I put all my stuff in.

If you do live in Japan or can receive packages where you're staying at, they have a Yamato Kuroneko stand to ship all the stuff you buy to your place (they sell the cardboard boxes there too obviously). It's a must if you actually buy a lot or feel uncomfortable travelling through Tokyo with bags with naked little girls drawn on them.
And there is absolutely no way anybody will steal your stuff. At a Comiket once I started lining up around 7am and we were told that our group would start moving in 2h30. In the meantime we were allowed to leave the line and come back at will. To mark your spot, you'd usually leave something on the floor. Alone and with nothing but my bag on me I just left it there (took my wallet with me though) and sure enough it was completely untouched when I came back. Your guy just dropped his wallet somewhere accidentally.
Also there hardly is a need to check the way from the station to the Big Sight, 99% of the people getting off the train go there and they have staff people showing the way from the station all the way to the entrance.

Best time is probably between 7 and 9 depending on how dedicated you are, I got in at about 12 and I had no issue getting the stuff I wanted (But I didn't want H doujins, which I am against, so I can't speak for them). Yes you need a catalogue.

They restocked at my local shop so I finally got my catalog yesterday too.

I found this interesting piece of information in it (page 17). To prevent people from coming early at night and in the morning, they're introducing a new system this year with a special line for people coming really early (I wish they gave the exact hour). Once the gates finally open, the people from this line get in in reverse order from which they arrived. I wonder how it will affect the hardcore fans. I'd assume the first people lining up will be people unaware of the new rule. Here's to hope I won't get any penalty for coming at 8am.

Majority of the old Soku/PoFV players have either gone to IRC, stopped playing, or migrated to the /v/ threads. But most of the people who spend hours upon hours playing Touhou daily are still on /jp/.

Wow 14.3 is pretty fun. I kind of wish that there wasn't the item leveling though. I died in one spot 80 times (the game keeps track) and then when I went back with a stronger item was able to beat it in one hit. That said it doesn't feel frustrating to die which is a good thing.

Can't wait to play the Nitori game too.
