I am a HUGE Tales and Gust fan. Been playing some Ar Tonelico for the first time lately. This game is very nice. I like the 2d PS2 games they made best. They have such nice and cute graphics. The 3d ones I don't enjoy as much.

I am looking forward to getting Tales of Xillia 2 and maybe Hearts R for Vita if the rumors are true.

My all time favorites are Mana Khemia 2, Xenogears, and Baten Kaitos Origins.

It's a clashing of the old and the new. SE has had trouble satisfying both camps until arguably the new FFXIV came out last year. Not sure if XV can keep the ball rolling.

I do miss the old Squaresoft days. Definitely a lot more experimentation going on (Live a Live being one of them. A short yet really good JRPG.) and not just being stuck in the "comfort zone" like where they're at right now. I blame the FF movie.

As much as I love FFT, the game was a mess both localization and coding wise. Take Agrias's Holy Sword Skills. Despite the game's description telling her Lightning Stab and Holy Explosion deal elemental damage, they actually don't.

I have a bunch of things I want, in my perfect jrpg:
-Overworld skills (obviously).
-Combination skills with other party members.
-Fun dialog events between party members (like Tales games).
-Interactions with party members having special effects (like Tidus's final Overdrive in FFX).

Just stuff like that. I really like it when the adventuring party becomes close-knit, which was probably my biggest issue with FFXII. The party felt like it never really went beyond the initial cliques it had (Fran/Balthier, Fran/Penello, Ashe/Basch). It just felt like there was no real group chemistry.

You would've disliked the 1st FF and probably 5 because just like XII, it focused more on the general plot than the characters which they were trying to go for. If it was treated as a side-story and not mainline FF, it would've fared better. But yeah, Vaan really pushed the third person MC up to 11. Revenant Wings came to fix that problem. Vaan and Penelo have more relevance in it.

Well, in terms of initial playthrough without going out of your way to level up, beat hidden bosses (that super mammoth in the prehistoric chapter can get fucked with a rake.) and find treasure it shouldn't take more than 25 hours which is on the short side of RPG's. Granted, like any old JRPG, if you don't have a guide you can get lost on where to go or what to get like the ninja and the near Future chapters.

Yeah, that's what kept me away from the series after 3. It just lost the charm it had by 4 which is arguably the lowest trough of the series.

The PS1 ports of IV, V and VI are legendary bad (coming from firsthand experience) and it takes like 10 seconds to load each battle.

Original SNES port of IV is terrible because Japan dumbed the difficulty down for it's western release. The NTSC port of VI was heavily censored due to a scene of implied rape and sprites with boobs.

The GBA ports had really bad music quality but better graphics.

IV - Play SFC version or the PSP remake
VI - SNES original is still the best
V - Not much options here, we didn't get it until it was ported to the PS1. GBA version is your best bet if you don't mind the load times in the PS1 version.

The SNES version of VI is still the best in my opinion. The NTSC version of IV (3 in America) had a really dumbed down difficulty because they thought it would be too complicated for a western audience and isn't really all that fun.

For IV I recommend biting the bullet and playing the PS1 version even though it has some really bad load times and the same pretty much goes for V. The GBA ports had better graphics, additional content and inferior audio quality.

They're all good, but each one added some things that will make it quite annoying to go back. The best method is either start with EO1 or EO2 and play the remake of EO1 (and for the love of god, turn the voice acting off and don't play the story mode).

Seiken Densetsu 3, I thought that was a cult classic around these parts. Definitely play it. There are 3 pairs of characters who's plots go together, but they don't force you to pick the two that go together. So look who goes with who before playing, so you don't miss out on a lot of dialogue.

I'm having a hard time deciding how to spend my points because I don't know exactly how the skills work. will 5 points in antiall be more effective than 5 points each in the specific element skills? parry, provoke, and allguard seem like they would all do the same thing, but i'm sure they don't really.

>> No.12050035

I want to be excited for Tales games, but it seems like every one I've played has really shitty characters and a dumb story. Destiny, Eternia, Symphonia, Abyss, Legendia, I gave up after that. They also have this really generic anime style going on in every game.

Kind of a shame, since the games usually have fun battle systems.

>> No.12050057

>>12049951
Parry prevents all physical damage on one attack randomly. If there are moves that do multiple hits, it has a chance to block each individual one, not the whole thing.

Provoke just increases the chance that any indivdual attack will be aimed at your protector. If say an enemy has a 80% chance to target the front row, and you have 2 people on the front row, it's a 40% chance to hit either one, and a 7.3% chance to hit any person in the back. With provoke, it's more like a 70% chance to hit the protector, which leaves a 20% chance to hit the other person in the front, and a 3.3% chance to hit any person in the back.

Allguard is the same trap. Protectors can take a lot of abuse. They cannot take every single attack for every party memeber, or they will die very, very quickly. There might be a couple cases where it'll be useful, but front or back guard are useful in tons of situations, give better defensive bonuses, and only need 2 seconds of thought to pick which one you'll need at any given moment.

>> No.12050061

>>12049951
And on Anti-all, I believe the higher levels of the individual elemental shields start absorbing damage instead of blocking it. And there aren't any situations where an enemy will use more than one element, and you can't deal with one or the other in an alternative way. Just stick to one, and if you're really out of sorts, rest and switch to the other.

You should try it. Birth By Sleep is really good, and if anything it is more Disney focused and less Final Fantasy focused: the only FF character in the game is Zach Fair, who appears in an almost comically Disneyfied manner.

BBS changed the battle system of the first two games and in my opinion improved it greatly. If there's a real flaw in the game, in my opinion it's that it gets repetitive going through the same worlds with three different characters. Although there are some alterations in the experience of those worlds, there is still a lot of overlap.

Multiplayer is also fun if you have a PS3 and the patience to deal with ad hoc party.
