I am not enthusiastic about the new Higurashi installment. I've heard it's about Hanyuu's backstory, but I don't care that much about Hanyuu. I'm also worried he might try to retrocon something in there to align it with WTC5, or worse, WTC3&4.

I feel bad about not trusting the author to restart work on Higurashi when trusting on your friends was a major theme in Higurashi.

I have to admit I really dislike her because of the reasons you mentioned. She was pretty useless in general and she doesn't add much to the character interactions with the rest of the cast either. On top of being virtually worthless, she was extremely passive aggressive and grating during most of her appearances. Her split personality adds to making her character even more unbelievable. One minute she acts like a little girl, the next moment she turns into some prideful god? I can understand Rika's shift in moods because she has to keep up appearances, but Hanyuu's makes no sense. Ryuukishi didn't put much effort into writing her and it shows.

I can see it, but it doesn't seem to be written that way. What would she even do? Be the final boss after the Yamainu? Is she just there to get off on Rika's death? That was the first time she was ever mentioned, so didn't think anything of it at the time, but it's sad to think that she was right there and did nothing but watch Rika brutally kill herself.) Speaking of first appearances, Irie called to the Yamainu by name in the 3rd arc by name, but Mangagamer changed their name to the Mountain Hounds every time they were mentioned after that, two arcs later. And how much do we really know about Hanyuu? Most of her characterization is through Rika's exposition in Mina, where she want around too much, and when he was, she was just depressing. Not a very good friend.

Oh, and I just remembered, she was trailing Keiichi during Watanagashi in Tarari when Takano dropped him off and they threatened each other. Even mostly-naive Keiichi figured something out, and Hanyuu didn't even think to report that critical information to Rika?

And then in Sai she tried to pass it all off as Rika's problem, dream or no. God or not, that was disgustingly arrogant for her to claim that it was wrong of Rika to put the decision onto her. We don't really know that. It's possible that she tried and just lost hope after a while, Higurashi only covers a part of Rika's attempts after all.

And there might be limitations about what Hanyuu can find out or disclose to Rika on the game board. It would be too easy if she would just be able to teleport on the culprit location and find everything about the opponent's plan, after all.

She was born out of Rika, therefore she had to have been born during or after the events of Higurashi. The manga makes it clear that she existed but did not have a name.

Only after being given a name by Rika for her hopping personality in Saikoroshi-hen does Hanyuu state that she has a friend.

Therefore the Bernkastel character was only fully put into being after the events of Higurashi.
The method is more open to interpretations.

Higurashi was a match between Featherine and Lambda. Featherine was strucked with a poison and went to sleep. Her ring was damaged which created Hanyuu.
Hanyuu was Featherine's piece but was unable to do much.
At the end of Minagoroshi-hen, Rena makes a speech about friendship which wakes up Featherine as it moves greatly Hanyuu.

In Matsuribayashi-hen, a hanyuu piece is placed on the board the same way Erika is placed in Umineko. This helps the gang to win.
Rika is not Bernkastel's piece, she was just a piece who noticed pattern as she was the key factor to determine who won the game. She won it on her own.

This is why Lambda says that Bernkastel won the game rather than Featherine.

And for Lambda, the answer is even simpler because she explains it to Ange in ep 4, she's just faking it. She's just faking a personality that is extratic and similar to Satoko, even acting the same way Satoko would have answered, because Satoko is Rika's friend and would get her closer to Bernkastel while reminding her of her past at the same time.
