Whoever suggested mint tea in the last thread, i'm not too impressed. Maybe i'm not finding the right flavor combination, but it feels too much like trying to drink something after brushing your teeth.

I am enjoying cold citrus teas. Would recommend, as long as you're already nice and warm.

But the ironic part is, if >>11719570,1 and/or >>11719573,1 hadn't posted, then >>11719573 wouldn't have been deleted. It's clear at this point that the janitor checks /ghost/, and he's allowing /ghost/ to influence his janitorial decisions. I've gotten good posts deleted this way just to see if I could.

So to put it plainly: the janitor is not being objective and evaluating each post according to the rules. He's allowing the outside world to creep into his decisions on /jp/. Not only is he breaking the janitor guidelines, but we literally control what the janitor does. It's not difficult to pretend you're the author of a thread on /ghost/ and get it deleted. Feel free to experiment yourself some time.

I wonder what the janitor tells himself to justify all this.

Does your market have passable tea? It would be a shame to waste your time driving there only to find a lackluster selection. Online is nearly always cheaper too, unless you live in a big metro area with specialtea shops. Even then it's hard to find nice steamed greens.

The nearest shop with decent product is an hour from me and they sell online, so there's no need physically go there after having a sample, even if I want to support local business. Save your money and put it toward quality leaves - it's certainly not worth the cost of petrol... unless, perhaps, you enjoy the thrill of a good drive?

>The janitor is not retarded, he just deleted two tea threads with unsutble Drive references in them and there's no reason he wouldn't delete posts with them.

Then he should be the bigger man and not delete threads or posts unless they break the rules.

What this means is that if I want a niche topic banned from /jp/, all I have to do is associate it with something else. e.g. if I post Re-Ment threads and ask for Skype friends as an aside, every following Re-Ment thread will be seen as another online friend-making thread. I can also announce my intent to do this after the fact, and get such threads babysat.

If the janitor wants to avoid these meta shenanigans that are already ruining his internet career, he should do exactly what he's supposed to do in the first place. And if he doesn't want to, well, then maybe he shouldn't have applied for the position to begin with.

Do farmers' markets (the kind that sell meat, fruit and vegetables) sell tea? I have no idea if tea is generally grown locally or imported, but it would be nice to head on over and get some fresh tea and have a chat to the farmers about it. I've seen locally brewed beer, sometimes freshly baked bread and pastries, but I've never bothered to look for tea. I know coffee is generally imported because it's grown in warmer climates. A "pick your own" service for tea leaves would be pretty great too. There's a big market after Christmas, maybe I'll Drive over and see if they have any tea. Though I'd imagine different types of tea are only grown in specific areas, or imported from certain countries. That's usually a problem if I head to the market looking for pineapples (nobody sells them because lol south america).

I used to drink tea with milk, but now I drink tea on its own, because I don't want the risks associated with milk. If you want the tea to be cooler, just wait or cut off the kettle before it's fully boiled (but make sure it's still hot, otherwise the tea won't infuse properly).

It would be a Janny victory. Less work for him. It would be a mod defeat but that's dangerous now.

Tea threads have been modblessed in a very strange way. We had great big ironic arguments about them over on /q/ until they were set in the rules. Getting rid of them would be the mods admitting that the /q/ changes were wrong, and would be yielding to shitposters. This is hilarious on a meta level because they are mostly inhabited by shitposters and literally new posters. Mods would have to drop their pride to get rid of this kind of thread and it would have to extend to stupid shit like scenery threads.

It's not simply making janny happy - janny follows /q/ rules. If they start changing the rules again they face another shitstorm. That's why /q/ is gone - user entitlement and drama. My personal theory is that the janitor (or at least, one of the janitors) is cool with NEET threads, but he was asked to delete them by moot or a mod (the rules were changed, after all). Again, you don't get banter.

Say some bloke is a nonce. People unironically bully him, maybe they bash his head in, break his legs, and set him on fire. That's assault and it's a crime. But then you're in the pub and people say, "Remember Old Jimmy who buggered them kids?" and you say, "Aye, that poof had a screw or two loose!" and then Jimmy wheels up to you and says, "I'm going to prison, I just wanted to say goodbye," and you reply, "Aye, good riddance mate! Measuring the right amount of tea, getting the right temp on the water, timing the steep just long enough. Maybe smelling it dry and again after brewing. Some people like sweets first - that's kinda weeb. However you prepare tea is up to you but there's rarely anything automated involved, contrast to drip coffee, so there's a ritual to it. Not a weeb ceremony but a routine you go through with your equipment that develops a little with every go.

With bags probably just relaxing and watching it steep. Enjoying the aroma then sipping as you resume the day. Tea time is a ritual.

What do you guys think of these takeaway cups?

I always spill them onto the rim of the cup, or tilt them too fast and spill coffee on myself.

Last time I was drinking one while walking past some cute schoolchildren, and I spilled coffee all over my white shirt. Some girls laughed at me and I felt bad. Then a hailstorm started and everyone got wet. It hid the coffee stains on my shirt, and I like to think it was God's revenge against the girls because now they had wet shirts too.

Can't they figure out a better way to do takeaway coffee? The plastic tops ruin the taste. Maybe one day I'll buy a flask and ask coffee places to fill that (I saw a woman do this once and it was super cool) but I'm at my limit of social anxiety just by asking for the normal drink.

I'd also recommend genmaicha, if you are more interested in Japanese teas. It is sencha (Japanese tea leaves that have not been ground) mixed with bits of roasted rice. The rice was originally added during wartime to allow the tea supply to last longer, but it imparts a pleasant, starchy taste to the tea and quickly became popular even during times of abundance.

I tend to prefer Chinese teas to Japanese teas, but genmaicha is really good. Also, Korean barley tea is pleasant and is often consumed cold in Japan during the summer.

I purchase my tea from the following vendors typically:

http://www.teaspring.com/
http://www.taooftea.com/

Also, Reddit, despite its unpopularity, has a really comprehensive list of retailers on their tea subreddit - http://www.reddit.com/r/tea

For tea preparation, I use a Japanese kytusu pot (sometimes called a "bird pot") for Japanese teas and a Chinese gaiwan for the rest.

Gaiwan's are a little tricky to brew tea with at first, but a number of tutorials exist online to give you an idea of how to manage them. After that, it's just a matter of getting used to them:

http://chahai.net/tag/tutorial/

Enjoy your tea! Let me know if you have any other questions.

>> No.11728856

It takes a little while to figure out what sorts of teas you prefer, so trying a few from each of the color categories while considering the flavor profiles that accompany them (usually published on the vendor's site) is a good way to go about trying tea.

White tea - the least oxidized and usually the most delicate or sweet in terms of flavor. These teas are often refreshing and (very mildly) fruity. These teas contain nearly no caffeine.

Green tea - a bit more oxidized than white tea. These teas can range from having nutty/roasted flavors (dragonwell, genmaicha) to having sweeter flavors (meng ding). These teas are a bit more caffeinated than white teas.

Oolong tea - even more oxidized. The flavors of these teas vary wildly, and tend to change with repeated steapings. Oolong tea is often prepared repeatedly with the same set of leaves, with the temperature and steep time increasing with each subsequent steeping. The specifics regarding the temperature, steep time, and the number of times you can reuse the leaves will vary depending on the oolong tea in question. These teas have a moderate amount of caffeine.

Black tea - the most familiar tea category in the west. Tends to be very smooth and highly oxidized. These teas have quite a bit of caffeine and make pleasant breakfast teas and alternatives to coffee.

Pu'er tea - fermented tea. Regarded as a delicacy in many Asian countries in the same sense that wine often is in the west. I am not terribly familiar with it, and it can be very expensive, though cheaper ones do exist. It is usually sold as a large brick or disk of compressed leaves

"Red tea" - usually refers to African teas like heuningbos and rooibos. These aren't technically teas but are instead made from the needles of African cyclopia bush. They tend to be very sweet, contain no caffeine, and are quite tasty.

Is tea healthy?

I don't drink coffee or tea but I've been researching about the latter (especially green tea) because it seemed healthy and relaxing, however I've read that it has negative effects (it's bad for your bones, teeth, esophagus and prostate), though it's true that it's very good for reducing stress.

If you have a source for that I'd be interested to read it. Most research I've read on tea's health effects (both good and bad) has been really tentative or contradicted in its conclusions. I've heard about the esophagus thing, though. That's not a property of tea; it just has to do with people who drink beverages scalding hot without waiting for them to cool.

In any case, if you look at it another way, tea is probably healthier than any other food or drink people might consume every day as a habit.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/6015821/A-cup-of-tea-really-can-help-reduce-stress-at-times-of-crisis-claim-scientists.html

- According to a study, tea can cause prostate cancer in high doses: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-18494725

However, there are also studies that directly contradict this: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17392149

The National Cancer Institute page about green tea seems to imply it's beneficial: http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/pdq/cam/prostatesupplements/Patient/page3

Coffee seems to be good too: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/08/130826143608.htm

- Too much fluoride can cause bone and teeth problems, and tea is a big fluoride source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/10200566/Cheap-tea-raises-risk-of-bone-and-teeth-problems.html

- And yes, the esophagus thing is due to the temperature, but I guess it still applies to tea:

that is usually because the majority of coffee drinkers are just caffeine addicts who tend to buy really cheap coffee in bulk because they drink so damn much of it. they add sugar & creamer, powered or otherwise, which curdles or some shit and makes your brew taste odd at lukewarm/room temperature. accidentally adding too much of either of those obviously ruins your brew as well. this explains your office phenomenon of thrown away coffee. they aren't drinking it for the taste, they're drinking it to wake the fuck up and do some work.

conversely if you buy quality beans, grind at home and drink it black it will taste good at any temperature.

I generally mix my teas together, I have found some wonderful combinations over the past year since I decided to experiment.

Peppermint + camomile
Peppermint + pomegranate
Peppermint + Green tea (been drinking this a lot recently, actually so good)

I need to try pome and green tea as well at some point. Those sound like they could be good together going from the peppermint combinations.

I tried mixing those with Earl Gray but I still can't really stomach that stuff man.
Earl Gray is just, it is just so against my tongues likes. I heard so many good things about it, but nope.
I try to drink it with some combinations because I know it is pretty good for you in general, but I combine only small amounts.

Likewise, it just has too strong of a taste for me.

Mixing little bits in doesn't hurt though.
Due to that strength of taste it has, it can change teas with very little effort in some interesting ways.

I mix it in with those teas mentioned above to various extents and it sort of works.
It is basically around a 3:1 ratio roughly where the 1 is EG.

I also like to drink my teas when they are warm-ish rather than boiling.
More relaxing IMO, plus, it also doesn't carry the possible risk of heat-damage to the insides.
Due to my Crohns, this is also a bigger concern to me because my body is already stupidly sensitive to sudden changes.
The Peppermint really helps a lot for that luckily. I also take peppermint capsules for that, but I still love my tea too.

Ok, so I'm about to get into finally drinking proper loose leaf tea (most likely black to start), and I have a couple questions about what kind of equipment I need. Is it normal to heat the water with a tea kettle, and then pour the hot water into a tea pot that either has a mesh strainer or infuser or something? Then after the proper time, pour it into the teacups. Sources say that you can make several infusions from one unit of tea leaves, and since I'll probably be making only one cup at a time, how long do the soaked tea leaves last generally? I think that's about it, but if you have any recommendations for tea pots or anything I'd love to hear them. Unfortunately I've only got a coil stove right now, so anything that can't handle that is out of the question.

That's about right. Warming the pot by swilling a bit of hot water inside before putting in the leaves is recommended. You probably want to measure how much water looks like what in your teapot before you try brewing, especially if you're not making an entire pot. For black tea, a teaspoon (5 ml, 2 grams) for a 6oz cup is right. An infuser isn't necessary, you can just put the leaves directly in the pot.

And I guess you should throw out used tea leaves within the day? Each successive infusion will be weaker and if you leave it out longer, more flavor will escape but it won't grow moldy or anything for a few days...

>> No.11746443

>>11740901
Assuming you're drinking by yourself, it's simpler to skip the teapot and just get a hanging mug infuser. If you're hellbent on spending money consider putting it aside for an electric kettle with multiple temperature settings and a "keep warm" button for when you branch out other kinds of tea.

I usually have about three or four steepings. Though teas with milder flavor (e.g. not black or roasted) tend to noticeably weaken near the end.

There's a lot more that I would add to this, but it's a good overview.

Oolong is any tea oxidized between green and black levels. It has a range of flavors because of the range of oxidation. You wrote that oolong teas are meant to be used in multiple infusions, however almost all teas are meant to be infused 2-6 times, not just oolong.

My local hipster cafe serves premium green teas and I had a cup today. Keep in mind this is a super popular, super hipster place that is the clubhouse for all of the cool kids and punk rockers.

Tea is bought by the establishment loose and shaken by the workers into individual drawstring baggies. The baggies are placed into mugs, which are then filled with hot water from the espresso makers. Served directly afterwards.

I gave mine about five minutes to steep to a lime colour before drinking.

What I'm concerned about is the taste and smell. The aroma was faint and could be easily smothered by surrounding smells. The taste was somewhat bitter, but this quickly became bland as I drank the tea. It was calming, except for the dregs which I had to choke down.

If your pot is glazed, then there is no problem with switching as long as you rinse it between teas.
If it's unglazed, like a yixing or something, you'll want only one type of tea, and preferably only one variety within that type (green -> sencha, etc.). Most yixing pots are used for oolongs in my experience, and that's what I brew in mine. I use a mild greenish oolong from a local place here personally.

>>11752358
Yeah one minute is a standard infusion time for first infusions. Keep in mind that the first infusion is usually not as "good" as the next few, it's mainly to "unlock" the leaves for the next few infusions. Most teas are supposed to be infused 2-6 times.

>>11752770
A good kyusu teapot will have a mesh strainer inside it, commonly removable for cleaning and stuff. Some pots (such as the yixing I mentioned above) don't have strainers but instead have very narrow spouts to trap the leaves instead. If you're planning on infusing only a cup or two and not using a pot, use a basket strainer as >>11752788 said. Avoid bags or ball strainers as these often don't give the leaves enough time to expand. Sometimes I'll brew in one cup and then put a coffee filter or other strainer over another and pour it into that if I don't have a basket with me.

What kinds of teas do you recommend for a beginning tea otaku, /jp/?

You sound like someone who doesn't like tea so much as they like hot fruit water.

Sencha, Bancha, Kukicha, Genmaicha, Gyokuro and Matcha; These are real teas.

Your monitor is currently giving you cancer.

Tazo is not horrible as Brand-Name teas go, but still nothing amazing. If you really want to get into teas, order some sencha or genmaicha from an importer website (I listed the ones I use in >>11751331 ).

There is a study or two that does claim this, but there are far more studies that claim the opposite. It's up to you, but I'd say it's not likely that it actually does cause cancer or anything bad.

I agree with >>11759064 about tazo

its mediocre but actually okay compared to most mass-produced tea, i particularly enjoyed zen (the green tea), calm is a run of the mill chamomile and awake is good as a coffee substitute

I drink a lot of jasmine green tea. Lotus green tea is great. Tazo makes a great one that is decaf and is great hot or iced. I really enjoy wild sweet orange and Refresh which are both Tazo.

I enjoy mixing a strong Earl Grey with Vanilla (black) at about 2/3+1/3.
Tastes like chocolate then.

Also, by now I'd do anything to find French Vanilla tea. No German tea store had that.

None. When I have the occasional taste for sweet tea I buy it premade. Too much of a hassle to make.
