I saw a starter home brewing set the other day that includes the tank and tubing and all that stuff. The kits themselves also seem to be pretty cheap--they cost about four pints of money but make forty pints of beer!

Is it something a stupid person could do? From what I hear, the problems usually lie in keeping the tank clean and sterile, and having to wait weeks every time.

Kits are true EZ mode. The problems come when you aren't careful to keep things sterile. Anything that touches the broth has to be sterilised- spoons, funnels, tubing, everything.
If you can stand the wait then even a stupid person can do it.
Just read up a little and understand what's going on (A book called "Booze for Free" by Andy Hamilton is a good place to start) and you should be golden. A kit is nice because it gives you the gear you need and you can just use that gear again.

Beer is easier than wines since you don't have to wait so long (less chance for bacteria to get in or something to ruin the flavor).

Oh and it's not weeks you have to wait- it's months. This is the catch.

If you have the money to spend on a kit and space to put it, then I say you should give it a go. It's quite rewarding to be making something yourself, even with a kit.
