I also posted this in /a/, but it might be better here. I don't have any pictures of it, but it's something I've been wondering about. I've been googling for hours, but the terms are kind of ambiguous so I'm not getting anywhere.

What does it mean when a character has crosses/plus signs for eyes? (A vertical and horizontal line. NOT an X)

I've seen it a lot in Ganbare Goemon games, and in other anime, usually on a background character dressed traditionally japanese, or playing a shamisen or something.

Is there some cultural significance? Is this an expression, or a bunch of coincidences?
