I think the big problem with these laws is that you can't really defend what they're against. There's probably some system of ethics in law like you have to prove a law is harmful, and I'm sure they can dig up evidence that lolicon may lead to child molestation and simulated rape might lead to sexual assault. Then the lawmakers get to say, "Well, why not?"

This is what happens when normals find out about some new form of subculture. Having never dedicated themselves to a culture themselves they decide to observe it out of boredom. They become shocked by what they see, wonder why it isn't the same as everything else; the same plainness which they are now bored of. They then proceed to dissect it, remove what they don't like about it, and bastardize it. And after they are done with their sociopathic butchery they simply leave to find out what new subculture their friends have decided to play around with for a few months, it's only a phase for them after all. And the people who originally enjoyed this culture are left with the regurgitated remains of what once was.

It's happening with video games. The dumbing down of core gameplay mechanics, the insistence on making everything a 'cinematic experience' with an 'epic narrative.' The insistence on removing any form of (female) sexuality so that it can 'become a true artistic medium.'

It's happening with anime and otaku culture as well. The blatant attempts to whitewash anything that might offend foreign consumers of the medium. The sexuality, the hyperviolence, and just about anything else that is too extreme for them to handle. In the end, we will be left with nothing but the same generic romances and hamfisted, black and white action movies that only enforce a widely accepted morality.

Hell, it's already starting to trickle down into TRPGs. So I'm mentally prepared for when they decide collectively destroy that.

I remember a lot of people being upset about D&D 4E, something about how they made it more like World of Warcraft and more action-based. I saw the trailer where it showed hip young people using laptops, and it really turned me off.

Also, a few days ago I was lurking /co/ (sorry) and there were threads about how superhero films are slowly ruining comics. Apparently, the characters in the Avengers are slowly turning into their film counterparts, because that's what the normal people want. And Deadpool used to be just an ordinary character with a few throwaway gags that got popular on the internet, but now he's all zany and meme-savvy because that's what people know him for.

We need to go back to the unwritten agreement that was, "We are freaks with fringe interests. Stay out of our business and we'll stay out of yours."
