I'm just curious and I thought this would be a good board to ask, can anyone tell me why a lot of people in the otaku community seem to have these elaborate computer setups?

I get that some people like to have a separate pc for gaming, but four seems excessive. Shed some light on this for me?

Mine's a self-built budget shit-build from multiple years of birthday money and even a gift from someone (a harddrive). Everything in this system is a hack. The CPU fan doesn't work right and makes grinding noises when the case is standing up, so it's always on its side. The CMOS battery holder broke, so I had to manually replace it with an AAA battery holder that I just happened to have (this involved using a soldering iron on the motherboard). The rear fan is dead, so it had to be replaced with the front intake fan, which is now missing. Because I don't have a front fan, I have a window fan sitting in front of the computer. It's propped up by another, much older computer, so that it's able to actually blow air into the case. My computer shuts down from overheating (I think), so I have to keep an eye on the temperatures. I don't have air conditioning, so the outside temperature can also affect things. Also, my old hard drives would randomly shut off or fail to start up. This isn't much of an issue anymore for some reason, but it was a pain in the ass.

I don't have any money because I'm NEET as fuck. Therefore, everything I do to keep this system up ends up being some kind of hack.

A Code2duo made with cannibalized parts. It's not like you need anything more powerful to run Touhou and eroge.

>> No.11338531

I also have to switch some IDE and power cables around inside to switch which drives are connected
I have 3 hard drives and a CD drive, all of which use a PATA interface. I only have one connector on the motherboard though, so it's fuck. Usually my cd drive is disconnected because I don't need it. When I do need it, I connect my laptop (which doesn't have sound, because the headphone port broke and was then later desoldered and can't be replaced easily because no money) to the network and use its cd drive. But the problem with that is that the power cord is breaking apart so it can't charge correctly. I can't replace it (because no money), so I'll need to solder one of the cable connections to fix them and then use some kind of electrical tape to fix that. But that's a lot of work, so I just don't use cd's anymore.

Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (open box shit)
ECS A770M-A (open box shit)
Radeon 9250 (from an older system)
80 GB IDE HDD (from an older system)
Some cheapo PSU/case combo
512 MB DDR2 memory

At some point, I got a 320 GB SATA drive as a birthday present. After a few years, it "died", sort of.

For some christmas or birthday or some shit, I got 4 GB of DDR2 memory.

Using some birthday or christmas money or some shit, I was able to get a GeForce 9800 GT. I also had to pry some fucking plastic clip off of the motherboard because I couldn't figure out how to get it to work. Piece of garbage.

Later I received a 250 GB hard drive as a gift from someone online.

A lot of otaku culture is embedded deep within consumer culture. It's just like any other consumer culture really, except this one has it's own little world that lives in the side lines. The people found in it are usually those that didn't like the 'mainstream' version of consumer culture, but are more often those that were simply cast out of it and found solice here.

It's the same shit, different package.

Personally, I'm on a T61 and I'm not planning on upgrading until I can no longer find parts to swap out on eBay (already had to change mobo because baking didn't work, and screen because I an entire barbell through it). I have a P4 tower I use as an HTPC sometimes, and a AMD Athlon 64, 1GB Ram, ATi 9600 that's my 'gaming' computer (which stays off anyways since I don't even play games anymore).

People want to fit in somewhere (mainstream or otherwise) and often have something they can physically attach themselves to.

Danny doesn't need more than a single one of those c2d mac laptops to do what he does, but he's a consumer otakcool faget.

Oh, I'm not poor either; I just took a step back, looked at the how consumer-based the culture was getting, and decided not to be part of the problem. Voting with your money is bit of an inconvenience sometimes, but it works.

Because they have money, and perhaps they are part of an online community that facilitates having a good computer. Most of /jp/ is probably running a core2duo desktop or lower, or a mid-00's laptop, either with some stripped down Linux distro or XP. I'm probably an exception among most other people because my Mom gave me some money to build a decent computer a few years ago.

Anyway it's not really a facet of "otaku" culture, it just happens to be correlated. PS Danny Choo is a faggot

This, every single word of this.

Otaku lifestyle can lead to peculiar configurations indeed.
Here's mine for example, although it was shaped by LACK of disposable income resulting in lots of research, multiple minor upgrades involving buying/selling used/discounted parts and tweaking them to get the best price/performance ratio.
Not pictured: Q6600 is overclocked to 3.2GHz;
6GB of RAM is taken by a RAM disk used for disk I/O (mostly torrenting@30Mbit/s);
Rampage Formula is actually a way cheaper P5E cross-flashed for RF's extreme overclocking features;
second monitor, SyncMaster T240 doubles as a TV for PS3 via HDMI, IPTV and regular TV via TV tuner, which is also used as a capture card to play PS2, and lack of post-XP drivers for which contributes to using Win2003;
Radeon HD 6950 is unlocked by cross-flashing it into HD 6970;
half-integrated ASUS audio card isn't detected by Speccy for unknown reason.

Might also be fun to make a specialized "Touhou Machine" where every inch of the system is Touhou. It's basically a computer in a computer. You have a hard-drive file on your computer (usually it takes up several gigabytes, ends in .vhd or .vdi or something else), in which you install your operating system of choice (such windows xp or linux). When you start it up, a small window appears, and it looks like you're booting up a computer. Eventually you'll see your virtual machine's operating system start up. Inside that window you can interact with your very own virtual machine.

Most computers these days can run virtual machines, but if you have a very old processor, you might not be able to do so. Your processor needs to have "VT-x" or "AMD-V" built in.

Nothing can be solved now probably. That's why a lot of Filipinos are starting to migrate to Canada since there's a lot of opportunities there compared here.

Here, foreign investors are taxed quite a lot by the government using the 60/40 ruling, meaning the Philippines still owns the foreign company if it is inside the country. The pork barrel (fund of projects for Senators/Congressmen) have been mishandled and abused by non functioning NGOs that apparently get funded without doing projects.

The whistle blower started after Snowden whistle blowed as well, so at least he was a good spark here in the Philippines.

The worst thing here is the current President was the son of a former president as well, he promised quite a lot for "reform and stand against corruption" during election time but the Philippines' debt just worsened during his first 3 years in the office. He just attacked anyone who opposed his power.

That's the Philippines.

According to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yonah_%28microprocessor%29)) most Yonah's have VT-x. However if there's a way to check your exact processor (either by looking up what you bought on newegg, or your laptop model) to make sure, it would be great. You might have to boot into BIOS mode (sorry if it seems scary, but there are probably guides for your specific laptop or motherboard) to enable VT-x/virtualization.

Installing a virtual machine doesn't require much investment, because you just go to virtualbox.org and download virtualbox, which is ~50-100mb at most. You'll also need to download operating system CDs (usually .iso files that range around a few hundred megabytes - I have a windows XP iso that is 550MB)

Fucked up? Yes, that's the best description of the politicians here.

With the 1 Trillion pesos in budget, only 1% of those goes to both healthcare and education, around 70% goes to roads and public transportation which is pretty stupid since most of the time they'd just destroy good roads and repair them.

Another thing is that there's a law here that gives privilage to the homeless people who turn into informal settlers since the landowners of the property they live in should provide a relocation spot that supports schooling, and relocation of jobs, as well as allowance for the first few months. And people abuse it quite a lot.

It's hard to fight the system here in the Philippines since the blind leads the blind, and free thinkers and people in politics who are truly just and progressive are either silenced or killed.

As for the cock thing, he has the same arm hair and pubes as the cockspammer.
(not this cockspammer, although I prefer this uncut cock,

Also the fact that the pictures, while not professional quality, are better than what normal people take with their cell phones, suggesting that they were taken with a tripod and decent camera equipment like on the shelf.

I know a few have made these observations before, but I just wanted to group everything in one post, also it gets boring seeing people talk about T all the time.

I was the first to make these connections with both the cock spammer and T.

Is there any doubt that I'm the true /jp/ lore master?

I admit I goofed on that, I'm not a camera otaku so I use "gopro" as a genericized trademark for those sports cameras.

Just like some people say kleenex when referring to whatever brand tissue.

Some months ago someone posted a youtube video recorded at night probably with that helmet camera thing, he was in a motorbike and some women in a car chased him, at first he got ahead of them but they finally catched up. I've looked for my past 2000 watched videos and threads with youtube in the OP since June 1 but haven't found it. The author of that video is probably the same guy. I don't know if I should post this because he might delete it, but maybe someone remembers or can find it.

I love the ``augh!'' when the girl shows him her bra. Very funny.

I also felt the spaghetti when he reached the red light and said ``oh god no.''

When you change videos from private to public they become 'uploaded'. If you search the archive for http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtzwADWX9Dg which is the original video, you can see it was posted two months ago, on June 22.
