Why doesn't everyone in these translation threads just learn Japanese?

Especially considering how long it has been taking to get any VNs translated lately. If you started studying today then you would be able to read (albeit with some initial difficulty) most of these VNs months before their translation is released.

It takes months for translators to release even one translated route for the average VN, even longer for more obscure games that they don't put as much time into, and that's as long as it takes to get to the point that you can start chiseling your way through reading material. It seems crazy to me that the same people have been coming to these threads for years and still haven't decided to just bite the bullet and learn Japanese.

>Why doesn't everyone in these translation threads just learn Japanese?

Some people, especially those past college and now are working full time, simply don't have the time to invest in learning a language. Others don't care enough about visual novels to decide it is worth the hundreds/thousands of hours learning Japanese, but care enough to play something when it is translated. Also, a sizable group only has a few titles they care about and ignore 90% of the titles listed in this thread and don't think it is worth the effort to learn a language to play a handful of titles.

Then of course a lot of people are just lazy.

>You're equating thousands of hours of effort to 2 minutes a week checking up on progress

It depends on how much you like VNs and other untranslated Japanese products. It might only take 2 minutes a week to check translation progress, but if there's tons of shit that you're dying to play and you're just sitting around trying to occupy your time with things that you're not very interested in while waiting for the translation then most of your time is going to be spent feeling depressed and bored.

At least with studying then you can feel like you're making an effort to achieve something that you care about, rather than idling away for months and possibly never even getting the translation since whether or not a game is translated is based on the whims of translators that are only doing this as a hobby.

I'm pretty sure a lot of people in these threads have flirted with the idea, or are currently learning, but it takes a lot of self discipline to stick with it long enough to see tangible results. It's very easy to get frustrated and just say "Fuck it" and come up with some self satisfying reason why it isn't worth learning anyway.

>> No.11207463

>>11207365
Also I can say from much experience that "I'll get to it later" can easily stretch on for months/years until you've pretty much given up without ever meaning to. Especially if you are really busy one week and can't get to it it's hard to get back into.

> We're working on something important, something we should've done five years ago. And we need to focus on it. See you in December. No updates until then. We won't be answering e-mail during this time.

> MangaGamer has the ef - the latter tale material. No Name Losers Toronto has resigned from latter tale and official minori development. It's out of our hands now. We are grateful to have worked with MangaGamer for the past three years, and we wish them the very best.

> So what happens to the eden* and Pure White Symphony translations? They're the property of the translator, who has since moved on as an employee of MangaGamer. If MangaGamer acquires either, they will most likely not contain the No Name Losers moniker.

> EDIT: Despite our best wishes, it has come to our attention that certain employees of MangaGamer have been disclosing specifics about our resignation to the public. We'll take the high road and not comment on their unprofessional behavior. Maybe we'll be a bit more careful in the future to whom we share sensitive information.

Since you don't seem to have any idea what you're doing: In most cases, text in a script archive file does not adhere to the default byte to letter mapping (the one your hex editor uses to display the letters in the right column). You will have to figure out where lines start and end and how they're read by the program, then write a tool to automatically export the text from the file and a tool to re-import said text.

Te 'figuring out how it works' part is by far the most difficult and complicated task, and how it works exactly varies widely per program. I can't do it myself either.

Also note that programming is an entirely different thing from reverse engineering. I can create stuff from scratch no problem, but pulling a program apart to figure out how it works requires a completely different skillset which only slightly overlaps with the skills required in programming.

>Not to mention you haven't actually explained the problems you've found with the examples you listed.
True enough. Forgive me for overestimating your abilities, I tend to do that because I don't usually involve myself with idiots.

The Shana scene I'm talking about it's this one. The picture is correct, and I don't have the commie release, but they completely fuck up this line and the next ones. The subject here is Yuuji's mother, and the fucktard who translated it at commie thinks it's Shana until they change subject again. There was more, but I can only remember this one.

The K one is obvious, 忝い becomes "Can't even clean!" and no one at commie manages to realize this is wrong, despite the English line itself not even making sense.

> and expect that to be an accurate representation of their translations
I expect it to be an accurate representation of their competence. If they can't even manage to TLC why should I expect them to be able to translate properly? And the Shana one was actually theirs though.

It's your own dumb fault for thinking a person with a completely different typing style was me just because they also happened to disagree with your stupidity.

As I thought, you are so braindead that you continue to insist that their editing says something about their translation work. I hoped asking for clarification would show that I was mistaken, but instead all I got was more of your inflated sense of superiority. I'm still waiting for you to list examples of bad translation rather than "bad" editing, but it seems unlikely that you'll be able to provide any.

It makes sense that they didn't notice the mistake in the very first episode of K because their edits assume the original translation is accurate (which it usually is). The line probably didn't stand out as odd at first because it's a robot that speaks in a very curt manner.

Not that you're informed enough to know, and not that it matters since it's about editing and not their fucking translators, but they quickly fixed it in all subsequent appearances of those robots anyway. Trivial mistakes like that are almost always fixed once they have more time to work on the series, but people like you use them as an excuse to insult Commie when groups that are considered better are guilty of the exact same thing or worse. SS-Eclipse is a great example of that, so it's hilarious that you actually used them. All you've proven so far is that you have extremely shallow reasons for disliking Commie and they have nothing to do with Commie's translations. Better luck next time.

It's nothing like Kamidori if that's what you're thinking. No, it's not being translated. If it's not listed here or on vndb, it doesn't exist. The Eushully VN that came before it, Soukoku no Arterial, also isn't being translated. Since you're clearly new to VNs, I'll tell you. Over 95% of them aren't and will never be translated. Every translation project that completes should be considered a small miracle. You either patiently wait in these threads for what ever trickles down to you, or you spend countless hours learning the devils language to rid yourself of needing translations. Reality's a bitch, isn't it.
