Depends on who you ask, of course. A well integrated reasonably self conscious person will find them as good as the first chapters, though somewhat different in execution.

The average /jp/ shitposter will say something about all of them being shitty, but Chiru is shittier still, and Yukari is their waifus.

Why are you asking here, of all place? It's full of self hating scoundrel who haven't got the slightest amount of taste. They unironically like Touhou, for the love of the Holy Spirit!

It's complete shit after that. For me the utter shittiness didn't sink in until some time into episode 7. Like I realized it was shit but the impact of this large shit had not hit me yet. It's like when you take a giant dump and there's that wait before you can smell it. Wait, I don't get it. Shkanon is confirmed, right? Then what the fuck is this shit?

EP5, morning after the 1st twilight. Rosa, Maria, Jessica, George, Genji (probably a lie) are dead. Others except Krauss who got kidnapped are gathered in a single room, including Shannon, Kanon and Erika the Detective.
Some people speak to Shannon and Kanon but we could disregard that since Erika probably knows about the existence of only one of them so that could be explained as 'somebody just talking to Shkanon'. But then Erika says picrelated. She means Kinzo and NOBODY says "HEY, SHANNON-CHAN/KANON-KUN IS ALSO NOT PRESENT!". If anyone, Natsuhi should've be the one to bring that up to avert suspicion from the study of non-existent Kinzo.

What's this? Just shitty R07 writing?

Yup.

OP, just stop after EP5. The writing in Umineko takes a sudden nosedive in quality during EP6~EP8.

The name Tohya (十八) is composed of numerical kanji, numbering 18. Breaking down the name "Oyashiro" into syllables (o-ya-shi-ro), each syllable is one possible reading for the numbers 0, 8, 4, and 6. Adding these numbers together results in a sum of 18.

That Tohya Hachijo Woman is using a Memory Voice Recorder thing, she has problems without it. This was stated somewhere in the VN. Her body contains Yasu/Shannon/Beatrice/etc

You can look at this diamonds or whatever you can call it (badge? lol) on Shannon & Kanon, it's grey and colorless. Tohya Hachijo has a green one, and her witch form has a master badge wich also would make sense, not only as a simple storywriter.

I don't want to write that much now, but there is no good ending because battler created a second character in himself and everyone else dies except ange. Of course that third Beatrice daughter (Shannon etc), that body wich contains alot of personalities has of course a lot of problems too, but she stays as a final character now it seems? As Tohya Hachijo with the help of that Memo Recorder.

Maria is Beatrice's best friend and they created characters together, and Maria had some imaginary friends with Beatrice. Okay i'm starting to write more and more. Rosa has alot of stuff too but i don't know much there, but i would like to

Nah, seriously, you should use this hole that serves you of brain.

Although I can understand that it would be difficult for your first time.

That scene was from Battler viewpoint. He's not the detective of EP 5. He's even the murderer of EP 5.

But then there's no point in putting "Detective" into the story at all since not even once (I think) there was a scene on the game board played from Erika's viewpoint. What you're saying is basically "Any kind of bullshit might and might have not happened in the room where Detective was present. Lying about number of people and Detective's actions/statements is also possible." Which would result in "shitty writing" anyway.

>> No.11083862

Still possible if we go by "Battler lied about Erika bringing that up since she wasn't in the same room to begin with". Which, in turn, causes us to doubt almost every scene with Erika on the game board.

I always thought episode 1 was the best, where the story was a straight-up murder mystery, with it's feet completely on the ground. No magic, no extraordinary characters, just the looming presence of a witch you never get to know is real or not, and all of these cool murders happening in strange ways, always dipping the story in the supernatural, but never jumping wholesale into the pool.

I enjoyed the other episodes less and less (I've read up to six). The introduction of new planes of existence, bizarre characters and side stories which went on for half of episodes at times completely derailed what made episode 1 so great.

But maybe you'll like it. Your life is your own!

That's the entire point and appeal of the series as a whole, though. Would 7 more episodes of vanilla mystery really be more enjoyable instead? Umineko is an incredibly unique experience because of the way it twists the genre.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle made Sherlock Holmes work with a large series of "vanilla mysteries." Yeah, it's hard because it takes actual talent instead of just adding random magic battles, but it works if you've got the skill.

Pardon, if you found enjoyment in the way the series gets esoteric and complicated as episodes go on (even I enjoyed a little the whole conflict between magic and logic the series takes throughout), then truly it was worth it for an audience besides me. I never meant to say that it gets bad or stale (though I would make a case for how ridiculous and crowded it gets) from a storytelling point.

I guess what I meant to say is that I enjoy vanilla murder mysteries more, I guess!

>>11086305
The mystery on episode one at least was quite interesting, though it's been at least a couple of years since I've read it. I can vouch for it, though!

I have no opinion on the other episodes because they left less of an impact on me. One thing I did enjoy following was the train of thought on the conundrum if Kinzo was alive or dead by the time the family arrived on the island. Now THAT was a twist!

>> No.11087118

>>11086736
I must be lucky, for I enjoyed both aspects of the story equally.
I exhausted my brain playing with the mystery (or what we thought was mystery at the time). The presented "challenge" was very fun to think and talk about.
And likewise the magic part was plain ol' basic fun. I think it only worked because it had the mystery side to give it weight.
In all, I think it's an extremely well-thought-out concept: Present an initial mystery that is eventually revealed to be built over so many things that it reaches to hell itself. Under that island we found whole fucking mountain of buried fantasies, and none of them unrelated to the core concept.

You know what, though? I'd have been content with a much less ambitious solution if it didn't involve a servant being the culprit and Battler promising to be back with a pony.
A shame I probably won't see anything with this scale and atmosphere ever again.

And the music, holy shit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_PDGz9egt4

>The mystery on episode one at least was quite interesting,

Actually, I wanted to clarify my statement a little now that I'm thinking about it and it's coming back to me.

The mystery on episode one wasn't really as much interesting as it was funny; the truth is that there was indeed a mystery in the form of a riddle behind all the murders, but the characters were too busy being paranoid to even care about it. It was quite a bit annoying, telling myself that if they just gave said riddle a shot instead of pointing fingers at one another, they might actually find the culprit or come out of the island alive, but I guess their disbelief on the supernatural tale behind the riddle gave the characters and the underlying plot some welcome degree of realism and flavor.

But truth be told, there's really not much of a "mystery" because what presents itself is barely worked by the characters. A shame! But it set the pace quite nicely for the episode, I guess.
