I usually dislike using filters because the games were not designed with those kind graphics in mind, but damn if that still isn't a cool looking art style. I think it could work, especially if they intentionally made games to look like that.

Just like getting a haircut looks jarring at first, if you just look at a filter for a second you're not going to like it, obviously.
That said the only filter I like is hq/lq 2x. It keeps the anti-aliasing to a minimum, only doing it with heavy contrasts in hue. Otherwise it creates shades between two like colors to blend shading. It's really just a neater, less blurry version of the Visual Boy's nofilter, or playing a game on a new TV with the GCN's gameboy player.
Super eagle and all that shit create too many unnatural-looking, jagged errors.

Emerald and Firered are your two 1.8 options.

Emerald calls the 2hus "puppets", allows alternate evolutions before the national dex, but doesn't allow you to switch forms after you've chosen one. It also has a working battle frontier.

Firered calls them "bonéka", doesn't allow alternate evolutions or ten desires characters prior to the national dex, but once you do get them, you can freely switch between forms which allows for some pretty overpowered stuff, like offensive moves on a DSatori (Wobbuffet)

They both have the physical/special split.
