So apparently I'm going to be staying with family for a month in Tokyo next year. I don't know a single word of Japanese, but do you think it'd be possible to learn enough to get by in a year if I studied hard enough?
If so are there online resources or programs I should know about?

Definitely doable at a basic level, took about six months of ajatt, largely kanji, to get conversant at a non-technical level, though i've heard good things about "fluency in three months" for a blitz to functional speaking though you miss out on a lot of the fundamentals for progressing towards fluency
