He was invariably described as an extremely notorious figure by historians and researchers, including as "a psychopathic killer and child molester" by Steven Zaloga,[2] as "violently sadistic" by Richard Rhodes,[3] as "an expert in extermination and a devotee of sadism and necrophilia" by J. Bowyer Bell,[4] and as "a sadist and necrophiliac" by Bryan Mark Rigg.[5] World War II historian Chris Bishop called him the "most evil man in the SS."[6] According to Timothy Snyder, "in all the theaters of the Second World War, few could compete in cruelty with Oskar Dirlewanger."[7]

Oskar Dirlewanger was born in 1895 in Würzburg. He served as an infantry officer in World War I and won the Iron Cross 2nd Class and 1st Class medals, having been wounded six times.[8] Dirlewanger was nicknamed "Gandhi" because of his slender build.[9] According to Richard C. Lukas, "though intelligent, he was a liar, an alcoholic, and a pervert who molested children."[10]

After the end of World War I, Dirlewanger, described in a police report as "a mentally unstable, violent fanatic and alcoholic, who had the habit of erupting into violence under the influence of drugs,"[11] joined different Freikorps paramilitary militias and fought in Ruhr, Saxony and Upper Silesia.

According to Peter Longerich, Dirlewanger's leadership "was characterized by continued alcohol abuse, looting, sadistic atrocities, rape, and murder—and his mentor Berger tolerated this behaviour, as did Himmler, who so urgently needed men such as the Sonderkommando Dirlewanger in his fight against 'subhumanity'."[11] In his letter to Himmler, SS-Brigadeführer Odilo Globocnik recommended Dirlewanger, who "in charge of the Jewish camp of Dzikow ... was an excellent leader."[11]

On 14 June 1940, the Wilddiebkommando Oranienburg (Oranienburg Poacher's Unit), a part of the Waffen-SS was formed. On 24 June 1940, Himmler made Dirlewanger its commander. By 1 July 1940, it numbered 84 men.[citation needed] Initially a unit of convicted poachers, over time it became increasingly composed of common criminals. In contrast to those who served in the German penal battalions (who had committed minor offences), the volunteers sent to the "Dirlewanger" were those who had been convicted of major crimes. While the theory was that service in the "Dirlewanger" would rehabilitate the criminals, it provided them with the opportunity to continue offending with no repercussions.[citation needed] Martin Windrow, the British historian, described them as a "terrifying rabble" of "cut-throats, renegades, sadistic morons, and cashiered rejects from other units."[1] Some Nazi officials romanticized the unit, viewing the men as "pure primitive German men" who were "resisting the law".[2]

On 17 August 1942, the expansion of the "Dirlewanger" to regimental size was authorized. Recruits were to come from criminals, Eastern volunteers (Osttruppen) and military delinquents. The second battalion occurred in February 1943 when the regiment's strength reached 700 men. 300 were anti-communists from Soviet territory. The unit was redesignated SS-Sonderregiment "Dirlewanger".

When the Armia Krajowa began the Warsaw Uprising on 1 August 1944, "Dirlewanger" was sent into action as part of the Kampfgruppe of SS-Gruppenführer Heinz Reinfarth, again alongside Bronislav Kaminski's forces. Acting on orders that came directly from SS-Reichfuhrer Heinrich Himmler, Kaminsky's and Dirlewanger's hired killers were given a free hand to rape, loot, torture and butcher.[7] Over three days, the troops indiscriminately massacred Polish combatants along with civilian men, women and children in the Wola District of Warsaw. While some of the regiment's actions were criticized by von dem Bach (who after the war described them as "a herd of pigs"[8]) and the sector commander, Generalmajor Günter Rohr, Dirlewanger was recommended by Reinefarth for the Knight's Cross and promotion to SS-Oberführer der Reserve. The "Dirlewanger" fought against the insurgents in Warsaw, suffering extremely high losses. The regiment arrived in the city numbering 881 officers and men; during the course of the two-month urban warfare it received reinforcements of some 2,500 soldiers and lost 2,733. Thus, total casualties numbered 315% of the unit's initial strength.

SS-Obergruppenführer Erich von dem Bach-Zelewski, overall commander of the forces pacifying Warsaw – and Dirlewanger's former boss in Belarus – described Dirlewanger as having "a typical mercenary nature";[25] von dem Bach's staff officer sent to summon Dirlewanger before him was driven off at gunpoint.[26] Nevertheless, in recognition of his work to crush the uprising and intimidate the population of Warsaw, Dirlewanger received his final promotion, to the rank of SS-Oberführer, on August 15, 1944. In October, he was also awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, recommended for it by his superior officer in Warsaw, SS-Gruppenführer Heinz Reinefarth (after the war, Reinefarth lied about his role in Warsaw, even denying Dirlewanger had been under his command).[18]

After a time, Himmler found that the killing methods used by the Einsatzgruppen were inefficient: they were costly, demoralising for the troops, and sometimes did not kill the victims quickly enough.[93] Many of the troops found the massacres to be difficult if not impossible to perform. Some of the perpetrators suffered physical and mental health problems, and many turned to drink.[94] Historian Christopher Browning notes three categories of perpetrators: those who were eager to participate right from the start, those who participated in spite of moral qualms because they were ordered to do so, and a significant minority who refused to take part.[95] A few men spontaneously became excessively brutal in their killing methods and their zeal for the task. Commander of Einsatzgruppe D, SS-Gruppenführer Otto Ohlendorf, particularly noted this propensity towards excess, and ordered that any man who was too eager to participate or too brutal should not perform any further executions.[96]

During the trial against Einsatzgruppen leaders, Ohlendorf was the chief defendant, and was also a key witness in the prosecution of many other indicted war criminals. Ohlendorf's frank, apparently reliable testimony was attributed to his distaste for the corruption that was rampant in Nazi Germany and a stubborn commitment to duty. He expressed no remorse for his actions, telling prosecutor Benjamin B. Ferencz at the trial that the Jews of America would suffer for what the prosecutor had done, and seemed to have been more concerned about the moral strain on those carrying out the executions than those actually being executed.

Otto Ohlendorf was sentenced to death and hanged at the Landsberg Prison in Bavaria shortly after midnight on 8 June 1951.
