Any tips on better panic control and holding your nerve. I very, very nearly 1cc'd EoSD just them, and I had 7 lives when I got to Sakuya, but suddenly, my fingers felt stiff, and I started thinking about retarded shit like *how* I'm actually controlling my fingers, and what would happen if they stopped working. I was also sweating profusely. Needless to say, I didn't last long. Is it just a case of playing it so many times that you get used to it, or is there a more mechanical way to hold your nerve? I believe I could 1'cc easily if I didn't fall apart like that.

>> No.11012730

Kogasa's first spellcard on Lunatic is pretty much impossible.
I'm currently on 0/175 with ReimuB and I can perfect all of the other stage 2's.
And yes I know about the safespot, I don't want to use it.

>> No.11012738

>>11012728
Don't worry--everyone starts to "meta" think while they're really into an STG.

I recommend just giving it a rest and playing it later with a clear mind. Maybe this one is just me, but I've never 1CC'd a game for the first time after hours of playing. It's always been the first or second time when I've been playing casually and happened to do well that day.

>> No.11012739

>>11012728
what difficulty?
also,
>I had 7 lives when I got to Sakuya
you're not using default lives are you?
Because in that case it wouldn't even matter if you 1cc'd it, it would've been invalid anyway.

>> No.11012747

>>11012738

Yes, I have taken a break now, I probably won't play it again until tommorow. I usually don't do that well, I actually haven't played it for 2 days, it was my "warm up" run this happened to me on. I just suddenly did really well.

>>11012739

Normal.

I had 2 lives when I started, don' know if that's the default. I lost one because I forgot to move to the right of the screen and shoot the spokes before the books that shoot bullets on Stage 4, so I shocked myself when I ended up on the right side of the screen and panicked. I regained that life anyway when I got to Sakuya's mid-boss.

Will do. The only problem is, I can't unlock Stage 6 practice until I 1cc, although if I beat Sakuya with still 7 lives I should be able to beat Remillia even if I fuck up really badly. I think Remillia's fight isn't as difficult as Sakuya's. Curse of Vlad Tepis and Star of David are a joke, as are most of her standard attacks barring the first one.

CtC is okay but there's plenty of better stuff around. Phantasmagoria Trues and Magical Singular Day are top-tier and definite must-plays. A couple others by the guy who made Trues (Phantasm Romance and Re:F/Rain) are pretty cool. The Last Comer and Marine Benefit are decent, probably around CtC level. Fake Strange Legend (EoSD/HRtP crossover) and that danmakufu Double Spoiler clone are pretty nifty if you like those kinds of games. Then there's stuff like Suwapyon, which is kinda awkward but not bad. Oh, and Scarlet Meister if you like balls to the wall horis. Probably missing stuff, but those are most of the well known ones.

Shmups forum, better than those bullies on IRC, and you don't have to interact with the community if you don't want to. Stick with Normal and never ever restart, restarting is counter productive if you're a beginner, you should only do it if you know the game inside out. I guess continues can be okay if you want to unlock stage practice, but I personally wouldn't use them.

>> No.11017955

Keep trying, you'll crack it eventually. Use stage practice a lot too.

MotK is okay if you stick to Help Me Eirin, there's a lot of experienced players there to give you advice if you need it. The other boards are full of secondaryfags though. Gonna have to go against what the other guy said as well. Shmupsforum is more or less shitposting, negativity from shitty players who refuse to put in any sort of effort, and a handful of people who can actually play. Kinda like /jp/.

>> No.11018073

>>11017955
I can only think of a few negative people on shmupsforum. I've never been on MoTK very often, but after browsing a few threads, I'm under the impression that they'll end up driving a Normal player off from STGs really fast. Then again, I just feel really shitty when somebody else says that something is piss easy and I can't do it myself. Chaining and looping DOJ being one of the biggest examples.

You're right though, /jp/ is the absolute worst when it comes to negativity.

I know that PoFV has a ranking system of some sort, but I don't know if it applies to match mode. I've seen some people beat them in 3-4 minutes after their first miss on the 2:00 mark, so I think that they start to count down after you get hit once or something to that effect.

I usually miss around 1:10 or so because I suck, still don't see them get hit because I end up dying at about 2:00 or 2:05

And that's kinda the point of that last spellcard, you lose Motivation rapidly and you can easily game over at the very end.
Happened to me and probably a lot of other people as well.
If you're low on motivation, like below 100% and the spellcard is ending, you may want to say fuck it and just stay under her in the middle of the laser, since the laser itself can't kill you.

The only reason I can see that they're all so secretive is because they're at war in DonPachi.

Can we please stop it with the MoTK/IRC/etc powerlevel discussion? I thought the point of having this kind of discussion on an anonymous imageboard was to get rid of the attentionwhoring that plagues other places where people are named. There is no reason one's personal ability should come up in any discussion unless you're blogging about your progress.

>>11058367
The discussion is dumb since the userbase is highly shared, especially between /jp/ and IRC. But even on /jp/ though, blogging about progress and posting scores, even when anonymous, is still "attention-whoring." Especially in a small place like this, where basically every post that is a screenshot or score can be narrowed down to 1 or 2 people. The only aspect of these threads that doesn't involve attention-whoring is requesting/giving help, doing the challenges, and arguing about which game is better/harder/gayer. And all of those have been done to death a thousand times, except for maybe the challenges.

On a slightly less related note, for future threads, I suggest sometimes making the challenges less long. Instead of full runs, some single stage practice runs like we had long ago (when the threads were more active) would be better and would probably get more submissions.

If you aren't at a similar level to me (at or close to one or more hard 1ccs) then you're the one who's not normal. There's really no excuse. I have maybe 150 hours total in all SHMUPs, and this includes time I've spent in DDP, Ketsui, and a few other games I have for MAME. I can't even consistently get past stage 3 in Ketsui, or stage 4 in DDP. i was psyched to do yukari after, but then remembered i needed 60 captured cards, i checked my results and saw i had 53/135 (or whatever the max is)

so i did a normal run and captured all the cards that had 0 captures on the history (the only ones i missed where youmue's last card and yuyukos wandering lost card) and checked my results again, but it was still 53...

is there any easy way to get those last 7? on the wiki it says unique cards, so does that mean easy/normal/hard/lunatic?

You aren't practicing correctly if you put in 150 hours into STGs and still haven't cleared a Lunatic. DDP 1-ALL is also easier than PCB on Hard, so you're definitely doing something wrong. One of the guys I regularly talk to was able to 1cc EoSD Lunatic in only 30 hours of gametime, and 1-ALL DOJBL and Ketsui in the span of only 15 hours. Also ridiculously good at Garegga, getting a numbered score on his first couple of hours playing.

In watch mode, they can usually last 30 minutes to an hour in some extreme cases. Mostly seems to happen with Mystia vs Mystia for me.

You could also try playing StB and DS, as it has a wide variety of fun patterns and you really don't have to dedicate the time to play a full run if you don't have the time. I haven't played StB in a really long time, but I do remember a lot of the things in that game being really tough.

For EX Patch's first attack; Just dodge the bullets. Stay under Patchouli as much as you can and avoid the bullets. Plain and simple.

Philosophers Stone: This can be kinda difficult. There are aimed elements to it as far as I know (maybe another anon can pitch in with more information about it) but it's very shortlived so I just concentrate on the dodging and capture it through raw dodging. Be prepared to bomb if necessary.

I really dislike MoF's Marisa shots. While MarisaB is nice (slightly weaker ReimuB with more speed), her bugged level 3 power is annoying, since you need to make an effort to avoid it (unless you want to abuse it). While I like Gradius options and think she is cool, MarisaA doesn't really offer any reason to use her over other shots. Her screen coverage is hardly better than a forward shot and her damage is pretty average even with all 4 options hitting. Kinda sad but oh well. MarisaC can do some really cool shit, but her frost throwers take some getting used to. Worth giving a go if you like shots like that, but she's not as straight-forward as other shots. In terms of scoring, MarisaC has overall world records in hard/lunatic/extra, and MarisaB has the records for easy/normal, though both shots are pretty close in all categories.
