What was your impression of Japanese pop culture before you became a weeaboo, /jp/?

I've been a weeaboo since Tenchi Muyo started airing on Toonami. My only contact with Japan before that point was seeing the Tekkaman Blade dub and watching Power Rangers/Zeo.

In elementary school all of my dork friends loved DBZ and played pretend with that shit. I thought they were the biggest faggots ever.

Then the Naruto fanbase occurred and I automatically assumed every chinese cartoon as DBZ or Naruto, and swore myself I would never touch the medium.

As for pop culture, I didn't know Japan existed before I was a certain age. I thought America was the only country that made cartoons. The Little Koala, Noozles, Maya the bee, Little Bits, Mysterious Cities of Gold, the first time Dragonball aired briefly on TV, all American.

I guess I was somewhat aware that they made video games and Nintendo. Games like Street Fighter, RPG shit no one cared about but sometimes had sexy art, and weird stuff I had no idea how to play.

When I noticed some cartoons were Japanese, it was in the Zeiram/Akira/Ghost in the Shell/Ninja Scroll/Cyber City Odeo era, so I thought all Japanese cartoons were like that- violent, bloody, weird, and awesome. Also giant robots. Well there was stuff like CCS too, and other show with cute girls doing cute things (fighting horrible monsters) too. Tenchi Muyo remains the only good harem to me.

2000s came and I gained the ability to watch anime over the internet. I've been disappointed by most of the shit that's come out since then. Azumanga and all those shitty shows like it. Groups of girls not killing things while wearing short skirts. Guys going to school and not punching anything. No ultra violence. No cyber punk. No random boobs and panty shots in shows that weren't entirely about boobs and panty shots. If it wasn't for Nanoha, I probably wouldn't even watch anime anymore.

I still don't know shit about Japanese pop culture, but I hope they don't listen to that shit that plays when anime comes on and that shit that idol groups sing in the main stream society. Japan exports samurai and ninja movies, along with China exporting martial arts movies, that's all I thought of the other pop culture of either over all these years.

Most racist Simpsons episode ever on another culture. Fox must being glad of being a fascist white race master. Gaijin forever making fantasies of monks wearing tunics and eating 250 grams of rice at day. Sakura trees, sushi with happy faces and average joe in detention because offered 100 $ to force a citizen making a blowjob.

Pic average gaijin pretending being japanese culture lover.

I literally weeaboo'd immediately upon exposure.

I remember seeing Robotech and Mospeada when I was 7 or 8 and just feeling my face melt off.

First obsessive otaku thing happened shortly thereafter. They sold Mospeada toys at the K-Mart near my house and I must have bought every single one they had or received in stock for a good two years. I'd play with the things until they broke, so I learned by way of necessity to buy in twos. One for the shelf and one to open.

It was all downhill from that point.

Go away, Proud Asian.

Though I always wonder what localization issues shows like this must face. For example, I remember reading that in the Arabic version, Homer drinks cola instead of beer. They must have to edit a lot of episodes.

I thought it was childish shit until I watched Cowboy Bebop back when it aired on Adult Swim. Watched anime for a few years, learned Japanese and put more time towards playing eroge instead. Pretty much beyond saving as of now.

I'm more or less the same. As a kid, incidentally everything I became devoted to happened to originate from Japan, starting around age 5-6 something.

Word. First cartoon that caused an impression on me was GoLion (well, "Voltron"), and Gatchaman too. I was like, three years old at most, and it still attracted me more than anytthing else for some reason. Then into the Pokemon games and other RPGs. And the few OPs and EDs left undubbed (Rurouni Kenshin, Gundam Wing, CCS Movie 2 ED) absolutely blew my mind and stayed in my brain like parasites. I felt the Power Rangers had... soul, for lack of a better word; I was enticed by the message, butchered though it was by Saban, and without knowing it was actually a Japanese production.
At the same time I felt the culture shock sometimes, like with that Simpsons episode. The Mister Spark ad was so bizarre.
Fifteen years later I find the same kind of ads to be as normal as the ones from my country, while remembering how I saw them back then. It's a strange feeling.
Why am I blogging so much.

I don't think they edit the show too much in Japan. The Tokyo episode was never shown though.
There are some dubbed episodes in NND, the dub's not half bad

I always thought Japan was this place in the world that was technologically really ahead of us before I turned to the dark side, due to the reports about robotics and such on the TV when I was younger.

Funny how I now know that isn't as true as I thought.

>>10938714
This happened to an extent for me too. I'm really not surprised Japanese things are my strongest interests.

>> No.10944660

I've always been around it and I don't really feel weaboo at all.

But as kid I was crazy into old samurai movies though and passionately hated Americans and western movies. I even read hagakure as 8-9 year old.

That was probably the most weaboo point in my life.
