I find it really unbelievable/silly for someone to become a walking vegetable just because they saw someone close to them die. The new Evangelion seems to throw around mental problems without any real impact. Asuka's mental corruption is immediately 'critical' when Bardiel attacks her, but there's no sign of mental contamination here in the future. Shinji has a 'nervous breakdown' but is fine seconds after Kaworu removes his choker.

Also, I wonder what this 'peaceful place' Kaworu was referring to is. I think it's safe to say that Rei is being set up again to betray Gendo (realizing that she doesn't need to follow orders all the time, as with her ejection scene at the end of 3.0.) So maybe it's the good old instrumentality project again, with him in the driver's seat.

Misato also refers to it in the 4.0 preview, I think. "His destination will give him hope."
