Use the Dr Moku ios/android apps. I was able to memorize the Hiragana and Katakana in a month with that. I could have done it quicker if I buckled down and studied more.

Since you can use it on the go, I found it perfect.

No...I did it at the same time as University.

Each day on the train I used the app (about 20 minutes). After a month I had them both memorized. Come time for my Japanese test at University I got 100% in both the Hiragana and Katakana tests (writing words in Japanese + converting the Japanese to romaji) along with the Hiragana comprehension test (Had to write a script based on a story. In my case it was introducing myself to the class). Hiragana + Katakana comprehension isn't due another week.

Thanks to the apps i'm currently sitting at 100% in Japanese.

I'm not saying a piece of paper wouldn't work. I'm saying that for me it didn't work and instead the apps worked for me. Furthermore they blended well into my lifestyle (doing it on the way to Uni rather then sitting down and studying for 2 hours+ straight). I always had my phone with me so I could study in between classes/when I had free time, ect.

The university attempted to teach us by giving us a paper based list. By the end of the first month we were all practically using the Moku apps.

As for kanji, they aren't part of my class.
First class covers hiragana/katakana/speaking/listening/culture

Kanji are introduced in the second class (covers those used in JLPT N5 and N4 ).

For kanji I've been recommended to use "heisig's remembering the kanji" which has an app now. I can't comment on its quality yet though. The other recommendation I was given was http://kanji.koohii.com/

It's pretty standard that I've seen from asking friends in other Australian Uni's who are doing/have done Japanese. The only difference I've seen is how quickly they introduce Kanji and whether they include the culture topics or not.

I know some Uni's do it quicker (Apparently Oxford gets you to learn hiragana in a week and Katakana in a week. Before pushing you into 50+ Kanji a week). However in doing so they spend less time on grammar and other aspects.

I'm thinking about starting a Youtube channel dedicated to "teaching" Japanese. Kanji, Grammar and whatever comes to mind. I will make it as professional and as informative as possible. That means, not a random fucker rambling on in front of a webcam and with a piece of paper.

Any suggestions or idea's?

Something i am thinking about is the fact that weekly videos on youtube won't be an efficient method to learn Japanese. So i don't think doing each Kanji, from JLPT5 to JLPT1, will work. The same probably goes for grammar, but maybe not as much. So, how to make something interesting, usefull, but not pointless?

You should teach Kanji by order of frequency.

>> No.10868416

>>10868371
Yeh, i thought about that, but the same goes. It is just not efficient. I would rather just give tips in how to practice Kanji, and maybe explain about different readings etc. And then ones in a while do a random uncommon, interesting kanji, just for fun and to boost people's motivation.

You just won't learn Kanji by weakly videos.

That's the worst thing you can do. I know, a lot of people think you'll learn faster "the important stuff" that way, but it's not true. Learning kanji by radicals gets you way faster to the goal since you can anticipate the meaning of a lot of kanji if you know every radical. Learning kanji by the order of frequency will throw you in a pool of cold water whenever you learn a new kanji since you don't have any visual clue.

Tough question. Tell the people they should learn with stuff they actually enjoy (I've learned Japanese for and by reading VNs, for example). Demystify the language and the most common misconceptions. Tell them how they should learn without getting frustrated (stupid shit like memorizing all readings is really common). Deal with unrealistic expectations (it's not over after you've learned all jouyou kanji) and why this shouldn't discourage them.

I'm sure you'll find enough stuff if you think about the common mistakes people make (maybe stuff you've done yourself) while learning.

Just so that the guy can copy and paste into google, without needing to translate it. If he would copy and paste 迷惑の受身, he would only find pages in Japanese.

Never did i claim to be fluent.

Make videos about exceptions or idiosyncrasies in the language that a self-learner might not be aware of. Or maybe cultural aspects that would help a person better understand and use the language.

For example, maybe make videos about phrases that imply something completely different from what the literal words mean (e.g. euphemisms).

>> No.10872945

>>10872807
This sounds interesting, but i am not sure if it i will be able to do this from the start. I am not familiar enough with the language for that yet.

>> No.10872982

>>10872945
Ah, that's a shame. In that case, maybe you can make grammar videos? I know they already exist, but it would be a good supplement while people grind kanji and a taste for what they're going to learn next. Each week you could focus on a particle or tense.

fuckin' worst method ever.
Just write it all on your notebook, repeatedly!
I have been learning kana for 2 days (2 hour writing plus 1 hour listening Jpop along with reading it's romaji and kanji lyric, per day) and I can memorize half of the hiraganas, including dakuon and youon.

>> No.10876147

fuckin' worst method ever.

1) Get your nintendo DS. Everyone has one by now.
2) Open pictochat. See that kana keyboard? Look at it. Fucking looking at it and write each symbol down.
3) When you take shit, when you're on the bus; when you eat, when you are staring into space, write what you see ALL DAY everyday.
4)Test http://www.realkana.com/
5)Watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zfBMDNkJuI
6) Read Japanese websites skipping over the kanji and just recognizing kana.

Do it for 2 months straight and you'll never ever EVER have to review EVER.

I am thinking something with lots of conversations would be good.

Pokemon. The early games only have kana (may be useful or useless depending on how you learned) and the later games have optional, all(?) jouyou kanji.

Terrible idea. There are professional and informative guides out there already, mainly from qualified teachers/translators and not some random weeaboo who wanted to make YouTube videos.

NamaSensei's videos work for exactly the reason you described. if he wasn't silly and over-the-top, I'd never have remembered the stuff I remember now. I suppose that's not for everyone, but the ten seconds it takes to tell me to write it in my notebook fifty times (bitch) accomplished more than reading textbooks or looking at charts for hours.

Learning japanese over an english to japanese workbook, even though english ain't my native tongue, was a bad idea.

>> No.10878140

It went fine for me. I have never used a Japanese textbook in my native language, even though we do have some. I think it depends on the textbook and your proficiency. What's your native language?

German.

Well, since I'm going in rehab I thought it would be a good time to learn another language and found this textbook on a flea market for a few bucks.

Its not THAT difficult, but since I'm still struggeling with grammar in english I'm having slight difficulties.

I really suggest that you buy a good book and use it, don't save one the quality of your study material! I also remember that I had good time learning kanji with Heisig when I was at the hospital, so you may consider this as an option (preferably take a kanji dictionary or an app too, though!). Wishing you quick recovery from whatever your health problem is!

Thanks, bud.

Yeah, its an older book from the early 2000's.
Guess it was enough for a first start.

Well, most stuff you get at stores without ordering and having to wait a few days is "learning with manga", and that shit sure ain't gonna end on the check-out with me.

If you are taking a notebook or an e-reader with you, you may just fill it with some e-books like aforementioned Heisig and Tae Kim. My hospital didn't allow it, but I think it'll be the most convenient thing possible.

>> No.10878208

>>10878147
Try buying a good book instead of some shoddy book you found at a flea market. You should use quality books to help you study, they may cost more but the end result is worth it.

Your English seems good enough to me to read such learning books.
If you are having trouble with how they classify certain words in english, don't sweat it. Many English speakers don't know the proper grammatical classifications of words, and in Japanese learning books, they often make up new words and categories for Japanese words because there is no proper classification already in English.
And if the translation doesn't make too much sense to you in English, that's alright because learning Japanese and then translating it into English when you hear or read it in your mind will hold you back, you should be thinking and understanding in Japanese, not a translation.
