It's actually really obvious when somebody is playing in low-fps mode. You can tell by the way that they move, but there are ways to make it less obvious. They tend to twitch around a lot, much like the AI in PoFV. Any smart cheater would use hourglass for their cheating needs. I've used it before to start on Extra stage bosses, and even make a few TASed replays for fun. You can make it look really legitimate if you try hard enough.

I've played the first 6 a bit on normal and I like the sixth the best.
Should I stick to one game?

For me Imperishable Night was the easiest one to 1CC. It gives you ample time if you are hit by a projective to use a bomb to save your lives. That is still something I struggle with now, using my bombs if I am about to be hit with a projectile.

You can't beat the entire game without using bombs, but if you go into the games trying to 1cc with those expectations you are setting yourself up for failure. Also use continues so you can clear the stages and practice them in practice mode.

Small bullets can be broken with amulets or the orb.
I have no clue how to activate the bombs.

Is EoSD a good game to start on if you're new to STGs/Touhou?
I've been playing on hard and not using continues so that I wouldn't pick up any bad habits and so far I've only managed to get up to Patchouli after around fifteen game-overs, am I off to a good start on this?

Finally decided to get into the games after about a year of following occassionally looking up the characters and art.

I started off with trying to 1cc Subterrean Animism for a few days because I like the characters most, but Utsuho just murderers me eventually.

Then I tried PCB and 1cc'd it on normal in about one day of playing, and a couple of hours later did Ran with some lives to spare.

Now lubing up for Yukari. Feeling good about it.

How do I get better at making precise movements? I'm using a X360 controller because I'm left-handed and my right hand has no coordination when it comes to moving characters.
I'm using Marisa on EoSD and I am at times overshooting my movements.

There are USB bootleg Saturn controllers. Pretty sure those are what everyone else uses. And both of PS3 dpads are way stiffer than either of my PS2s, but someone might have a preference to that for shmup play.

Can you get the wireless 360 controllers working on PC? I played Futari with one of those MW2 editions and the dpad was the shit on it.

The best Touhou game you'd like would most likely be SoEW. Forget all fancy post Touhou 2 shit, this is where the peak is at. The rest of the series is simply just riding on a wave of awwesome set by this game. Let me list you why-

- Layers? This game is good for those. Not only do bullets layer with each other, but even the background and enemy spawns are going into the stray and you have to dodge them as well just to be sure. Also, the penultimate boss has some next level shit and you have to dodge her danmaku while also dodging her options which spawn the bullets. Sick.

- There are no repeated patterns or shit like that, bosses choose a random attack from their pool and fuck you in the ass with it. To hell with boring memo, this is the true RNG.

- If you wish for good and realistic quality, you probably should play this game. The enemies are so well made and the bullets look so neat you would not believe it. You can't simply see all of it at times, that's how awesome the graphics are. A true classic.

Don't be conservative with bombs. Feel free to start bombing spells at stage 1. You can plan a bomb route so that you bomb on places that are difficult and still manage to regain full power shortly after. Most important thing is to not die during boss attacks. The bosses drop life pieces after every attack as long as you don't die on it. You'll still get it if you bomb the attack.

Yeah, quite many of them. Many on MAME and then there's the retro ones like Tyrian, Raiden and Overkill etc. I've never practised any of them enough to 1cc, though.

I practised Yukarin today for 3 hours or so and finally beat her with a couple of lives to spare. Then I picked up Subterranean Animism (again, had practise from before) and managed to 1cc it on Normal a few hours later for the first time.

Pretty much everyone sucks when they first start playing. Give yourself a little time. Try to never die with bombs left. Watch your own replays (or maybe other players').

Also, have you tried keyboard? Some people find it more comfortable. It's really up to your own preference. I personally use keyboard and switch to a controller if the game uses a lot of buttons.

Forgot to add, you might try IN or TD if you're having trouble even on easy. They both have Spell Practice, which helps a lot. TD is easy in general, too.

Just keep playing until you get better that's about all there really is to it and maybe watch some replays with stuff you have trouble with.

If you're playing on normal, the stage itself is pretty easy to memorize so you shouldn't lose any lives on it, maybe just a bomb on the books, use ReimuA if you're having trouble with it.
Now Patchy is a different matter.
Her non-spells are pathetically easy, so you should never die to them, it takes just a simple dodge, watch a replay.
Her spellcards vary, depends on what shot type you're using, some of them have certain tricks you can use to make it easier for yourself, most of them unfortunately are random and rather hard for a newbie to capture.

Ketsui's mostly messy streaming so you just have to play and work on your general skills. There are also techniques to learn for the bosses and the two 1ups. Maybe work on the stage 3 midboss first. Once I could get the 1up most of the time I felt a lot better about the game.

It also helped me to bind Z to autofire and LShift to shot.

I grinded 1-3 for about five hours and I'm already feeling burnt out. IaMP music and gameplay is godlike. Gameplay is really hard to get used to at first if you've never played a fighter, but once you get to a decent level, it's fun as hell. Too bad the community drives away most new players. SWR and Soku are really fun too, but they're much easier than IaMP. Most people go with a LS-32-1 which is pretty quick and reasonably stiff. The LS-56 is stiffer and even smaller. It's a matter of preference.

Also note the product numbers. Anything with LS-XX-1 has a standard 5 pin harness that fit in everything (I think) fight stick, whereas LS-XX has the bare terminals. And depending on the stock stick and what you'd be replacing it with, you might need a different mounting plate.

My vision has gotten really blurry after getting majorly angry at STGs. Dropping chains late game in DDP, losing all of my lives and bombs on the last boss, and having people interrupt my game. Those are the three things that tend to trigger it on the days where I'm in a shitty mood.

It also doesn't help that I'm really indecisive about the ways I practice. It feels like grinding stages and playing full runs both are wrong, and I have no clue what to do. Should I grind through the entire game, or grind through the stages one at a time? I really wish I knew the proper way to play these games.

I'll have to try to find a healthy balance then. On that note, I should really start challenging myself further. Being a failure isn't so bad until you go to a Japanese arcade. Seeing a girl chaining the entirety of DOJBL, and then going over to the DDP cabinet to see that all of the top scores are in the 100M~300M range, making it all the way to 2-4~2-6 on each one, feels very demotivating.

Which games are you talking about anyway? Deathsmiles has MBL on disc rather than DLC, DFK has 1.51 as a buyable DLC rather than a first press bonus. Don't care about Akai Katana's or Deathsmiles' voice over first press DLC. Ketsui for the PS3 is identical.

Only game I can think of is DFK Black Label for Ketsupachi, and maaaaaaybe DOJ BLEX, since it's cheaper than the PS2 port, and after it's patched... Am I missing anything?
