/jp/ could someone please explain all the Touhou hype? I've listened to some of the music, which is godly, and play a little bit of Imperishiable Night which was good but i don't see how this alone could make the series as popular as it is. What am i missing and where do i go to find it if it exists because i'd like to get more into Touhou then i currently am.

>> No.10783910

Other than the games and the music, there are also official and fan comics.

do they expand more on the story or the characters and are they any good?

Shmups are fun. ZUN did something interesting with his shmup by making the characters little girls instead of spaceships or planes. If you've followed Japanese media at all during the last ten years, you'll know that "X, but with little girls" is always a huge hit.

People like the characters and setting. They're simple but enjoyable. It also paved the way for a huge number of fan works, partly thanks to ZUN being fine with derivative works. That's why there are so many fan comics, music, and games:

The official comics expand on various parts of the universe but usually tell their own stories (in which not much happens) rather than following the plot of the games directly.

The fan comics go every which way. Some are drama, some are comedy, some are romance (or pornography) and so on. Opinions range from "a wide variety of enjoyable stories" to "garbage that people only read because it says Touhou on the cover.'"

Touhou first got attention for being pretty hard, and a lot of Japanese gamers like hard games. It takes only 30 min to clear a game, but maybe two weeks of intense practice to manage to clear a game if you never have played Touhou or shmups before.

Now, the games have a lot of characters who have a lot of relationships to each other. This makes it interesting, and the fandom can do a lot with it.

All this, with the godly music in addition, made the Touhou games and fandom so popular. It has been a steady growth.

Don't use the word shmup. That word was created by jews so they can say the genre in a way that flows with their snake speak. Use STG from now on.

Actually, IN is looked upon to be one of the easiest games in the series.

My favourite is EoSD, but not everyone is comfortable without the red dot which signals your hit box when focusing. I think there might be a patch for it to appear though.

I like it the most because it is more simple. You have lives, points and bombs, that's it. I also like the cast in the game.

>anything to recommend that you've played or read?Favorite Comic/ fan game?

It really depends on what you like. Twilight Frontier have made some fan games I really enjoy (as well as a few official games). PatchCon is like a tower defense game that's pretty addictive. MegaMari is a pretty challenging Mega Man clone if you like those games. New Super Marisa Land is a fun Super Mario clone (the original Super Marisa Land isn't very good, however).

Some good games by other developers are Touhouvania (if you like the later Castlevania games), The Genius of Sappheiros/Devil of Decline (RPG, similar to SaGa or Final Fantasy), Labyrinth of Touhou (a bit like Wizardry), Touhou Mother (Earthbound parody), Touhou Pocket Wars (strategy RPG), and Sengoku Gensokyo (like Sengoku Rance).

Most of these games have English patches available, or don't need them.

As for comics, I don't even know where to begin. I'm a sap for cliche yuri romance and Aki Eda's art, so I like Rocket Fuel 21. You'll really have to do your own digging with that one.

There are huge game and comic packs on nyaa.eu. Though I really, really recommend you play all the games and read the official materials to familiarize yourself with the characters and setting first. The official shmups are really well-made (apart from the character art) and you should beat each one on Normal or higher without using continues (to get the true ending).

I feel like I'm the only person who prefers not having a visible hitbox.

I think it's because ZUN designed the game around not knowing exactly where it is, so there are less narrow paths between bullets (and a bit more randomness). In the later games, it's always the spell cards where you absolutely need precise hitbox control that kill me.

EoSD wasn't the easiest game, but it was easier in that respect.

Read a doujinshi instead. Western Touhou fans are notoriously bad at fan material, and it quickly devolves into non-canon being treated as canon amidst an ocean of ego-stroking.

/jp/ is unusually helpful today.

>>10784079
Well, EoSD bullets were a tad slower than on the later games, and I feel like it had less danmaku density too.

And Reimu's back (where her shirt ends) makes an excellent hitbox indicator.

I meant doujinshi, and why doesn't it surprise me that most of the western fan material would be shitty? It's shameful really.

>> No.10784221

>>10784200
It's mostly to do with the difference in work ethic. The Japanese place a lot of value in humility, hard work and a job well done, while Westerners usually just try to churn out a shitty product at whatever pace they feel like, having diva freakouts along the way at anyone who wonders why it takes them two months to do a simple scrawl, and when it finally gets out, it's plastered with watermarks both out of fear that "someone will steal my art because it's so good" and out of the author's childish desire to be seen and idolized.

Walfas.
It all starts going downhill from there, and it's not long from Walfas to Tumblr, Deviantart and (God have mercy) Facebook. Use your imagination, or if you're feeling masochistic, go and have a look at the secondary "cosplaying" attention whores, autismal tracers and dramawhoring Thai "artists".
