The otaku king guy had sort of his own band of loyal followers, and from what I remember displayed quite a degree of charisma and self-confidence. He was a miles better 'suitable partner' than the MC.

Similarly, I would guess that there weren't many other suitable 'quality' mates to choose from - so the girl chose the not that good looking but everything else above average guy.

It's not that uncommon. Popular guy in small town - average guy in big city; as long as the male:female ratio, income distribution, and blah blah blah is fine, it's not unreasonable for many objectively high quality females to chase after a not that objectively good looking guy - though, from what I remember, he wasn't that bad looking. In that context, otaku king was high calibre. Context matters.
